The TUBE ULTRAGAIN MIC200 from Behringer is a single channel, low voltage plate tube based microphone/instrument preamplifier, housed in a compact, desktop enclosure. With switchable phantom power available, the unit will work with all types of microphones. Additionally, the preamp features a 20dB pad, phase reverse switch, low-cut filter and balanced inputs and outputs. When used as a high-end DI-box, the preamp provides outstanding signal integrity.

The preamp has 2 interesting features, the first being the inclusion of flexible preamp modeling. This allows the user to optimize recordings by selecting one of the 16 preamp settings that matches their needs, be it for vocals, or acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, drums and more. The second is an integrated limiter that prevents distortion on the output of the MIC200. Various fixed limiter settings are available within some of the 16 preamp models.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 - TUBE ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

First, to Mike in TX, if you're going to run 70 dB of gain with an unterminated input, well, yeah, it might be a little noisy. Duh. Take *any* mic pre and do that and see what you get. It never ceases to amaze me the people who do this and gripe about the noise. And let's don't lose sight of the fact that while it might not sound like a Grace or Focusrite or whatever, it doesn't cost like one either. This thing puts a lot of bang in your ying-yang for $.Great for warming up a condenser or a ribbon before going straight into your Pro Tools or whatever, doing voice-over work, stuff like that. Probably makes a decent DI, although I havent tried. I put an old 77DX through it and is sounds like buttah. ;)

Comments about Behringer MIC200 - TUBE ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

Purchased it for my Ribbon microphone which outputs a VERY low signal. My First trial wasn't exactly kind since I turned both Gain and Output to their Max settings, but I wanted to see it's worst combatted with a REAFir noise profile immediately. I would never have to record, pushing it like that, still this VERY noisy setting turned out very noise free, although with a noticeable drop in the high frequency register. I experienced irrate noice and pops even with the Gain turned down but have yet to figure out why that is. Could be my XLR chord, still it's strange since I managed to get rid of this behaviour by messing with the power plug?! I also own two ART Tube MP Studio preamps that I have yet to try out with my Ribbon Mic. Overall I'm satisfied with all Three..

Comments about Behringer MIC200 - TUBE ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

I am writing this short review with the explicit purpose of driving down the average rating. Because this unit needs to be discontinued. Behringer is usually good at building sturdy, affordable devices that fulfill some basic function in recording, often surprisingly well. This thing can actually RUIN your recordings. Not only doesn't it provide any "tube warmth" or whatever the euphemisms may be, it actively destroys whatever qualities your microphones, mixers, DAWs or speakers may have. Needless to say that the "presets" are worthless at best and fraudulent at worst. Noisy, causes unpleasant, buzzy distortion, you're ALWAYS better off without it.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 - TUBE ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

I bought this preamp to use as a DI box with the expectation of being underwhelmed because of the really good price. Wow... It has exceeded my expectations. It produces a really clean sound, even with the gain cranked up. That by itself is worth the price, but it has so much more to offer which is a bonus for me.

Comments about Behringer MIC200 - TUBE ULTRAGAIN Preamp:

I once bought the ART preamp and, quite frankly, it made everything distorted and flat, and was a completely useless piece of gear. For years I went without using a preamp when recording. Having been familiar with not-so-great Behringer products, I assumed this would be just a cheap, pale immitation of the ART. A friend of mine convinced me to borrow his and I'm glad he did. I've since bought two of my own. It livens and warms up any condenser and the expanded modeling feature will spoil you - you'll never want to be without iit. It seems Behringer has really stepped up and improved their products. Suggestion: the tube needs to be plenty warm for it to give a consistent level. Leave it on for at least 20 minutes before using.

Even with nothing hooked to it this thing is very noisy with hiss, static pops and crackles. It sounds just like you are listening to a AM broadcast station in a lightning storm!
I bought this to simply supply phantom power for a condenser Mic and this thing is so noisy I'm not sure I could holler loud enough to get over all the noise this thing makes.
There is no option to rate this a ZERO so I'm stuck giving it 1 star.

All I really needed was a volume control for a head mic. At [$], this puppy fit the bill and then some (The metal box (chassis) is worth at least that. I'm not sure about the added "warmth" (personally I wish it was transistorized instead of "tube'd)... But it has added some punch to the vocals in addition to control. All in all, built like a tank.
