One of the coolest things you can do is to combine them with a white umbrella to make a small softlight.

Make sure to by four leaves for the most options.

All 4 shades are identical. Attaching two shades to the top and bottom gull-wings of the tota light is a breeze. However, as many have mentioned, attaching the side leaves is a joke. With a little bit of fidgeting (which you shouldn't have to do on NON DIY products) you can get them to stay but beware...if you decide to move your light around...they could/often fall off.

With that said, when attached, the leaves make the tota light much more controllable and do a nice job (the top and bottom leaves) of cutting the light and controlling spill. You can also use them with the umbrella as well as safety attach gels to them.

In my opinion, they're essential in making the tota light more versatile and hence more professional, but the side shade attachments needs a complete redesign.

Works better with gel holder

By Stan

Pros

  • Consistent Output

Cons

  • Awkward
  • Bulky
  • Fade With Use

Best Uses

  • General Use

Comments about Lowel Tota-Shade (Set of 4 Leaves):

I got these to replace the cinefoil that I was using to flag my totas with gel holders and polarizing filters. The instructions tell you clip the side flags onto the tiny angled metal protrusions of the horizontal flags at an angle. This is a giant hassle, and the precarious flags are prone to randomly spring off. However, if you have gel holders attached with gels, you are much better off clipping the vertical flags to the gel holders, making them actually usable. Two flags that I have used extensively have faded due to heat and turned a light orange after about six months of use, but they still work. They are also a pain to stack, as the clips end up making it difficult to store and carry the 8 that you need to flag two totas.

Cons

  • Fussy To Attach

Best Uses

Comments about Lowel Tota-Shade (Set of 4 Leaves):

Works well. Other reviewers have covered the bases. As a set of two, these are most useful. The end pieces can be attached, but are fussy. Best use case is to use to feather a strip of light. Would be nice if Tota-Light could be used vertically.

Comments about Lowel Tota-Shade (Set of 4 Leaves):

I can't believe I used my two tota lights for two years without these shades. Now I use them all the time. I do a lot of video interviews and I use my totas with an umbrella to act as a softbox light. Before these shades I had no way of color correcting the light while using the umbrella. Now I can put a full blue gel on these shades AND use the umbrella as a softbox. Works great. Also I can put diffusion on shades for another soft light source. Something else I'm experimenting with is attaching both totas onto the same stand, then stretching diffusion across both of them. Presto, a 1.5K soft light! These shades can do so many things.

Comments about Lowel Tota-Shade (Set of 4 Leaves):

It's great for shaping the Tota-light which can cast a very broad light.

Two of the flags/leaves clip-on very quickly and securely to the Tota-light's reflector plates. But as someone else mentioned, adding the two additional side flags/leaves is a little cuberbsome to attach, but they do the job whether you add two or four leaves at a time.

This is not a negative at all, but one of my flags/leaves was a little weak and would sag when I mounted it on the Tota-light, but all you need is a pair of pliers to tighten the nuts accordingly. That's one thing I like about Lowel, you can adjust the tension on some of their products.

Overall, they're great if you want to shape/modify your Tota-light further.

I used these for a concert recently - without them there was too much spill from the Totas that was distracting the performers. Simple accessory but it clips on easily and does the job.

This product seems a little expensive for what it is. But if you need it, you need it. The way it's designed to attach to the Tota light is a bit cumbersome but will work. I haven't used it for an extended period but it seems likely that it will get pretty hot to the touch.
