The PST or Personal Solar Telescope from Coronado provides stunning H-Alpha viewing of the sun - you can gaze for hours on end at the active red ball; from day to day it will perpetually offer an ever-changing array of prominences, active regions, filaments, as well as other surface details.

The PST is a 400mm f/10 solar viewing refractor with a 40mm objective. It's fitted with an H-Alpha solar viewing filter, and the thermally-stable system is tuned to <1.0 Å. Operating the PST is as easy as installing the eyepiece and focusing - within seconds you're ready to gaze in wide wonderment at the beauty, enormity, and intensity of the Sun's subtle (and some not-so-subtle) intricacies.

The PST features the same technology and quality that goes into a SolarMax telescope. However, at <1.0 Å it cannot reveal as much surface detail as the <0.7 Å SolarMax telescopes and filters. However - the PST certainly does offer well detailed solar viewing, it is extremely easy to set up and transport, and it does so with a very manageable price tag.

Comments about Coronado PST - H-Alpha Personal Solar Telescope:

I ordered this PST as a Christmas present for myself. B&H shipped earlier than expected and unit arrived ahead of schedule. When I finally got to use the scope on CHristmas day, I was floored by what I saw. After teaching myself how to focus and tune the PST I had a view of the sun that I never thought I would ever have.Loops and filaments dancing out to the sides and at a different point whorls and eddies of light and dark covering the surface. That first view will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Comments about Coronado PST - H-Alpha Personal Solar Telescope:

I've been a nighttime amateur astronomer and telescope builder for over 50 years. I occasionally projected the sun onto paper to observe something interesting like the Venus transit. But when a friend allowed me to look at the Sun through his PST I was overwhelmed. Seeing prominences, flares, filaments, plaque and other features through the eyepiece is very different from looking at photos. This is a great little telescope that any serious amateur should have. Perhaps it is not adequate for serious photography or science but well worth the affordable price to see our star in , quite literally, an entirely new light.

Comments about Coronado PST - H-Alpha Personal Solar Telescope:

This telescope provides excellent views of the Sun and its features. Given it is the low-end of the Coronado line of solar telescopes, it's performance is amazingly excellent. It is also very easy to use.

The only cons for this telescope are:

        1) It is very small and light so it tends to wobble a bit while focusing and tuning which can make it annoying to do either. Additionally, significant wind can also cause wobbling even when not focusing and tuning. Given a good mount, this effect can be reduced quite a bit.

        2) The 20mm eyepiece that comes with it is adequate, but not the ideal eyepice for this telescope. Meade makes a 12mm eyepiece for their Coronado line that is superb for this scope. They don't need to include the 12mm eyepiece, but I wish they had bundled a better eyepiece with this scope. Even their 18mm eyepiece is significantly better than the 20mm that comes with it.

Overall, I think this is an excellent scope for looking at the Sun. If you are just interested in being able to sneak a peek every once in a while, this is the right scope for you. If you are serious about studying the sun, you may want to consider one of their higher-end Coronado series scopes.

Comments about Coronado PST - H-Alpha Personal Solar Telescope:

Now I can see sunspots with my own 'scope and prominences (at the edge of the sun). It is just in time to show the transit of Venus to the grandkids.
The viewfinder is handy, but I have to point a little off center to actually see the sun. The sun is comfortably bright to my eyes, but too much for my cameras. I tried 2 USB microscope cameras and a Lumix camera. All overexposed. (Try manual exposure?)
The price is great for what you get!
