The Manfrotto 244N Variable Friction Magic Arm differs from the regular Magic Arm, in that the Variable Friction Arm allows partial locking in place of a light, grip, or a camera. This comes in handy when using a light or camera to track a subject. It is a pivot arm with a large locking knob. One end will support a light that has a baby (5/8") receptor. The other end is designed to fit into a Super Clamp socket, or other 5/8" receptor.

Good gear to have around
The magic arm is a good piece of gear to have. Well made and functions well. It says it'll hold up to 6 pounds but I wouldn't go more than 5lb.

Comments about Manfrotto 244N Variable Friction Magic Arm:
I now have six of these, one in the regular form and the other five in this, the "variable friction" format. I use the conventional arm only rarely. The "variable friction" form is much easier to use.As a wheelchair user I use these arms to support cameras and flashes both in the studio and attached to my wheelchair when outside. I've also been known to use these arms to support my iPhone or iPad, a music stand (used for every thing from a writing desk and book support, to a place to put my lunch), and a MIDI controller. Now if Manfrotto could just raise the weight capacity 25 or 30 pounds, I'd be really happy. Pay attention to the company's stated weight capacity. I find that I can safely exceed them on occasion. But, I've also gone too far at times and found an over-extended and over-weighted arm pointing at the floor instead of the sky. Never use a setup that can cause catastophic loss. A fully extended Magic Arm holding up your shiny new $ Canon EOS-1D with a fat long lens is a really, really bad idea.I once bought a low-cost versions of this product. It was trash. I'd rather pay full freight and get something that works.

Comments about Manfrotto 244N Variable Friction Magic Arm:
I use this Magic Arm with the clamp, Buff Einstein lights and a Buff Vagabond to shoot basketball and I'd say I've found the perfect combination for shooting sports in dimly lit gymnasiums. I also have the older style lever action Magic Arm and without careful maintenance and use, the older style jams up. This turn knob style Friction Magic Arm is rock solid and can hold several pounds where you want it. I would definitely recommend purchasing this Manfrotto Magic Arm.

Comments about Manfrotto 244N Variable Friction Magic Arm:
The magic arm is a useful tool to hang camera remotes. It is relatively easy to use. I have only a couple of issues. The first is that there are no instructions in the box on how to assemble it--just a pile of washers and knobs. Thank goodness for the Internet. Second, Manfrotto needs to redesign the super clamp to make it a little easier to set up. Otherwise, I had no issues hanging a camera and a 400mm f4 lens with it. Overall, no major complaints.

Comments about Manfrotto 244N Variable Friction Magic Arm:
was looking for a sturdy grip arm to attach a small monitor (with add'l hardware) or c-stand knuckle to other gear (a mayfer works well for this). This is sturdy and solid. The knuckle on it is perfect, allowing me to leave it adjustable, or lock it down tight. When I do adjust it, it's not completely open and floppy (unless I want it that loose). It's a bit heavy duty / big though to put on top of a camera, though I guess it could work. The Zacuto arms are much better suited for on-camera mounts, but are obviously much more expensive.

Comments about Manfrotto 244N Variable Friction Magic Arm:
I love this magic arm. It works great for positioning all sorts of things and is very strong. I have used ti to hold lights, my camera (with the camera bracket), flags/reflectors, etc. I use it in combination with the 143BKT and super clamp to hold my camera in situations where a tripod is not available or not allowed. It works really well. I opted for this version over the version that lets you use the RC2 quick release plates because of the versatility. The 244 version with the RC2 only liets you use it to hold a camera as the bracket is fixed permanently to the arm (or at least permanently enough) to the arm and therefor you can't use it for much else than holding the camera. I may invest in the 244RC2 in the future when I have some extra cash, but in the meantime I am very happy with this arm and the many things it can do.
I also debated between the 244N and the 143N. THe 143 is the original and it works really well, unfortunately the down side is that the friction machanism in it is pretty much and on/off decision. The 244 allows for variable friction which makes it much easier to make minor adjustments, especially as the one friction mechanism controls all three points of adjustment (the elbow and the two wrists, if you will). When you loosed it all three points are loose, when tightened all three are tightened. As you can tell this is why the 244 is much more flexible and easy to use. However if you don't need that flexibility, the 143 is still a great product and will save you a few bucks. All of the 143 attachments work with the 244.
Anyways, I love this product and will probably pick up a couple more in the future. I also don't expect to have to replace any of them in the near future as they are really well made and strong.

Comments about Manfrotto 244N Variable Friction Magic Arm:
i use this to support flashes, and light bodied 35mm cameras with macro lenses. it can't support the weight of heavy lenses or bellows, but it is still incredibly versatile. Compatibility with super clamp could be improved if they added a hex stud to one of the ends. this would prevent the arm from rotating in the super clamp socket, and allow the arm to hold more weight at certain angles.the variable friction knob is chunky and can be used with gloves on. it can really take a beating. the whole arm feels well made, but not excessively heavy.other than forgetting to put a hex stud, this arm has a million uses. an essential piece to keep handy in your kit.

Super versatile, use it to hold a flash or a camera, even a studio flash.
I also use it to hold a clamp to hold objects or plants in place for macro work.
What ever you can think of, it will hold it providing its not too heavy.
I have made some custom adapters from aluminum so I can mount just about any thing that I need.
