I used it at a family gathering on Father's Day. It worked perfectly. This tripod is strong and stable. There was a pretty good wind blowing and the tripod didn't flinch. It's heavy, but this is why it's so stable. Excellent adjustabilty and very smooth. Really the only negative thing I can say about it is that it's big and heavy, not for backpacking into the high country. But for photo shoots where you don't have to pack it far.. it's the ticket.

I am not a pro by any definition. I have used a few tripods in my time. I do quite a bit of still portrait type projects for own use and some for outsode project favors. There is no point in sugar coating the unit. I ordered it thinking it to be alot of tripod for the money. I was very dissapointed when I got it. So much so I returned it. B&H is a quality outfit not at all their fault.

Comments about Smith-Victor Propod IV Large Tripod with Pro-4 3-Way Head:

Heavy and solid, just what I needed. A lot of tripod for the money. Definitely not something you would want to hike with!

Reason for 4 stars: Initially, the head was wobbly on the legs. After removing the head, noticed the seat area on the leg section had 2 screw points sticking up, preventing the head from seating down completely. Cut a piece of rubber to put between the head and legs. That fixed the problem.

i have looked at other tripods, none come close to this one. however ! the little nob on the head is made of plastic and when tighting the little nob becarful because it is not made of anything other then plastic. and will break. the rest of the tripod is however, made of steel which is good

Comments about Smith-Victor Propod IV Large Tripod with Pro-4 3-Way Head:

I use this tripod mainly for panorama photography of cities and landscapes. It is extremely sturdy and well built. The legs use the twist lock which is slower than flips, but they are very secure. The feet have retractable rubber cups that expose spikes. The head locks positively and stays locked. Panning is ultra smooth. This is an excellent tripod for all photographers in a studio or outside in a fixed location. I would not recommend this as an easily portable tripod due to it's size and weight, but if you need a tripod that will remain stationary and secure, this is the one!

Comments about Smith-Victor Propod IV Large Tripod with Pro-4 3-Way Head:

I use this tripod when I photograph my paintings. It's sturdy and stable, easily setup and adjusted. Suits my needs perfectly. I have tried cheaper tripods - found them to be plastic and worthless for my purpose, and any other I can imagine. I find no reason to look at more expensive tripods either, as everything I need is provided in the Smith-Victor IV. I'm completely satisfied and recommend this tripod to anyone who is not walking miles to take a pic.

Very stable and gets into working height with ease. I like the guide lines on the legs to aid in leveling it. Not really liking the so called quick release plate. The plate is sometimes difficult to position and release. Overall, I'm glad I got it. Using this for videography, so photogs will love it.

a bit on the heavy side, but very well suited for the times where you don't have to carry it around a great deal of the time.i use it for macro shots around the house and where i don't have long distances to carry it. a very solid and versatile tripod for the money. works well for landscapes, especially if you like to shoot with small f-stops and longer exposures for maximum depth of field.

The Propod IV is an excellent heavy duty tripod. It is very fluid, stable and locks into place when you need it to. It can be a bit heavy if you need to carry it a long time but that's to be expected. Simply a well built tripod. I would highly recommend it for still photography.
