Also known as "Rags" these are the materials that are tied to the Butterfly/Overhead frame.

For many years, only the basic materials were used such as scrims to reduce light, silk to diffuse light and solid to eliminate light.

More recently many new materials have been added to allow many degrees of diffusion (Grid Cloths, Black Silks, etc.) plus many new reflective materials are now available to make large reflectors for both sunlight and artificial light such as Matthflectors, Grifflectors and Lames.

I primarily use this silk in a 6x6 frame, but often enough it comes in hand over softboxes, umbrellas, and large direct sun windows.

The light loss is higher than the rated 1.6 stops. Terrible for all natural light set ups using reflectors.

            Too much light loss

Comments about Matthews 6x6' Overhead Fabric - White Artificial Silk:

The stated 1.6 stop light loss is not based on typical working distances from subjects. My light meter is showing a light loss of over 2 stops at less than a foot away from this fabric.

If you're hoping to use this fabric in an all natural light set up using reflectors only and no strobes or flashes you'd be sadly disappointed. You have to put a LOT of reflected light on the subject in order for the background not to be blown out. A white reflector will only allow you to get lighting strong enough for closeups which defeats the purpose of having a 6x6. To get a wider shot you'd have to use a blinding high output reflector. Squinting subjects don't make for good portraits.

As much as I love my strobes and flashes I was hoping to have this product be a part of an all natural light set up. Unfortunately I'm going to have to look for something else.

Made a 6x6' frame out of electrical conduit. This fabric fits the frame perfectly. Great soft diffusion.

Haven't used it in production yet, but it looks like other fabric I've used and I like the reinforcement bands at the corners. I refuse to pay the ridiculous amount of money companies charge for frames, so I built my own. Just go to a home improvement store, get a few bars of 1/2" metal conduit and four elbows, plus a hacksaw if you don't have one. For literally one-tenth of what the rip-off companies charge, you can build your own strong, lightweight frame.
