The Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens for Nikon AF is for use with all Nikon AF cameras and boasts high resolving power and sharp image depiction with ideal background blur, making it the ideal lens for close-up and portrait photography. With emphasis on portability, this macro lens is compact and lightweight. A wide, smooth focusing ring makes delicate manual focusing in the macro mode easy and precise.

This lens has been re-designed to include a built-in motor to operate the auto focus system because new Nikon cameras do not provide mechanical linkage to the lens gearing for auto focus.

Di (Digitally Integrated Design) is a designation Tamron puts on lenses featuring optical systems designed to also meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. The Di design is achieved by applying a new optical multi-coating to its element surfaces.

I'd first like to thank the other reviewers here for their precise and comprehensive analyses of this lens. Your comments were very instrumental in my deciding to purchase this lens, and I'm VERY glad I did! My experience with this superb optic has been identical to most of yours; likewise my opinion of this product, as well. So much so that in place of a lengthy and verbose review of my own (and I fully intended to write one, too!), I'll simply say "Ditto!" , with just a few added comments:

    1. This lens is not only sharper than the Nikon 105 2.8 micro, but it's MUCH sharper!

    2. Overall IQ, in my opinion, is superior to the 105 2.8 Nikkor in every way that matters to me...color, contrast, raw resolution and fine detail, brightness and color saturation, a complete absence of any and all linear distortions, freedom from purple fringing and lower secondary chromatic aberations. And need I even mention its substantially better rendering of out of focus elements within the frame, or bokeh as it's often called.

    3. Build quality (which cost Tamron that highly coveted "5th star") is just barely adequate, reminiscent more of Nikons 55-200 kit lens rather than their micro-nikkors, but I'm more than willing to live with it's flimsy construction in exchange for its absolutly stellar image quality. I'm just going to have to be very, very careful how I handle, transport, and store it. Consider her, if you will, as one might the movement of a fine Patek Phillipe timepiece...fragile, but of utterly stunning, worrd class performance.
This one shortcoming notwithstanding, I would opt for this lens every time!

10 days after I obtained the lens it started to no longer work with my nikon d90. I did take it into a camera shop and we reproduced the error, but they don't know why. The camera intermittently does not recognize the lens. Therefore you cannot take pictures or adjust the aperture or use autofocus.
It did take cool pictures of some flowers we had around the house, but it's hard to be enthusiastic about something that stops working so quickly. Like many have noted the autofocus is tough b/c with so much range it usually takes a full second or two to focus on things.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens for Nikon AF:

I have always loved macro photography. The short time I have owned this, I used it for close ups of flowers. I look forward to when the weather breaks to use it outdoors. I like the ease of switching from manual to auto focus. It does not go onto my Nikon camera as easily as the Nikon lenses but it does go one fairly smoothly and I have not had a problem with that.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens for Nikon AF:

I got it about a month ago. I have been taking photos of older B&W photos using a tripod and a Nikon D800. It is critical to keep it still and I have to use the mirror up to keep camera shake down. I have been able to make sharp copies of old family photos. It seems to do a better job than a flatbed scanner. I mostly use manual focus.

                Works well for portraits too.

This lens is great for macro photography and can also be used as a normal 90mm lens. Good quality for the price and great picture quality. It fills the gap between the shorter and longer size macro lens on the market and is an ideal lens for the photographer that doesn't want to haul the much bigger and heavier 180mm macro around. Fits in a backpack without adding a lot of weight. Would definitely recommend this lens to anyone wanting an all-around macro that is good in a wide range of conditions. Can also be used with a tele-extender for even closer macro shots.

Debabted this over the Nikon 105mm and couldn't justify the additional money for the few times I'll shoot macro. So far the lens is very capable and sharp.

Bought this as a gift for my wife, but we all love it. It's got great sharpness and speed and extremly easy to handle. My wife and I use it on a D300 and my daughter uses it on her D3100 primarly as a macro and at 1:1 it's great. But it also works well as a potrait lens and for weddings. Definatley can't beat the quality for the price.

I purchased this lens about a month ago and I read the pros and cons on product before buying.the lens is slow to focus in auto and I use manual focus most of the time when using this product. The images produced by this lens are wonderful ans very stunning. This lens is a good buy for the price and great images. Buy it

I have been looking for a macro lens for some time and have undertaken a lot of comparison shopping with other lenses. I have used this lens on some very close-up photography and get great clarity and depth of field. I only wish that I purchased it before.

We've only used the lens on a few shoots but have been very happy with it. We were looking at the Nikon 85mm prime for portraits and saw this had good reviews, and looked like it stacked up well.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens for Nikon AF:

This lens is a fantastic value when compared with the Nikon lenses in this category. Great price and feels a lot more solid than what I was expecting.

If I could rate it 4.5, I would; it's not without its flaws.

                              Pros:
It's my first f/2.8 lens. I own a D80 with the cheap kit lens (18-55 1:3.5-5.6) and a 55-200 1:4-5.6. This lens feels much more solid and produces much better results than either of my other two lenses. Obviously I use them for different applications.

Produces absolutely stunning portraits. Great color and contrast, beautiful bokeh.

                              Cons:
For macro shots, I'm still struggling with the DOF, because it's virtually non-existant. I'm not sure if that's physics, skill level or lens...

As others have mentioned, the method of switching between AF and Manual is not very intuitive, but it doesn't make any less sense than a AF/M switch on the lens, I guess. You slide the focus ring forward (away from the camera body) to switch to AF, and back toward the camera body to switch back to manual. Not really a con, but certainly not a pro.

Also, Don't be mislead by the fact that the lens is branded with f/2.8. According to the display on my camera and the EXIF information, It's only f/2.8 when focusing at close to infinity. When you're focusing at the minimum distance the best you can get is f/5.6.

All that being said, I would definitely recommend it. Highly.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens for Nikon AF:

                              I really dig this lens.
I did lots of research before buying, and remain happy with my choice. I'm a little-bit of a tech-photographer and I enjoy the range that this lens offers. It features a dial on the side; "full/limit," which allows you to go from 1:1 macro (.29m) to portrait shots by altering the focal distance. It IS a specialty lens, and there's a lot of fiddling with it at first to get used to the functionality.
The focal plane at 2.8 is as sharp as a knife, with great bokeh. I'm what you would call a "pixel-peeper," so if clarity and sharpness with little aberration is what you desire, this lens is the one.
My only concern is the auto-focus acts a little erratic in certain situations with low light. I'm usually trying to do something really taxing with it when I notice this, so just revert back to manual. This would bug me if it were a lens that I were using to photograph sports for example, where every millisecond counts.
I didn't try it next to the Nikon 105mm, but for the price, and 6 year guarantee, I'd go with Tamron any day. Very pleased. Please give me free stuff for my humble opinion. ;)

It will really get it's workout on a photo workshop that I'm taking in March.

This lens is absolutely great. I have used it for about 2 weeks now and it has exceeded my expectations. Not only is it incredible for macro photography, but it also looks good on people. It gives a very nice soft look to all photos. The DOF can be very shallow if you want or it can be very steep. The overall build feels very nice and sturdy. The manual to auto focus mechanism seems to be a lot smoother and faster to switch with instead of the traditional switch on the side. People have complained about the slow autofocus, but it really isn't all that slow, and in doing macro shots I hardly use the autofocus. I love how close you can get to a subject and without a problem still focus on it. This is a great buy and I highly suggest to buy it, it is totally worth the money!! Crystal clear, close up lens. I was hoping that it would work a bit better for portraits but I think its just a little to slow. Macro photography its a champ, beyond that I think it has limits.
