The Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens for Nikon AF is for use with all Nikon AF cameras and boasts high resolving power and sharp image depiction with ideal background blur, making it the ideal lens for close-up and portrait photography. With emphasis on portability, this macro lens is compact and lightweight. A wide, smooth focusing ring makes delicate manual focusing in the macro mode easy and precise.

This lens has been re-designed to include a built-in motor to operate the auto focus system because some Nikon cameras do not provide mechanical linkage to the lens gearing for auto focus.

I'd first like to thank the other reviewers here for their precise and comprehensive analyses of this lens. Your comments were very instrumental in my deciding to purchase this lens, and I'm VERY glad I did! My experience with this superb optic has been identical to most of yours; likewise my opinion of this product, as well. So much so that in place of a lengthy and verbose review of my own (and I fully intended to write one, too!), I'll simply say "Ditto!" , with just a few added comments:

    1. This lens is not only sharper than the Nikon 105 2.8 micro, but it's MUCH sharper!

    2. Overall IQ, in my opinion, is superior to the 105 2.8 Nikkor in every way that matters to me...color, contrast, raw resolution and fine detail, brightness and color saturation, a complete absence of any and all linear distortions, freedom from purple fringing and lower secondary chromatic aberations. And need I even mention its substantially better rendering of out of focus elements within the frame, or bokeh as it's often called.

    3. Build quality (which cost Tamron that highly coveted "5th star") is just barely adequate, reminiscent more of Nikons 55-200 kit lens rather than their micro-nikkors, but I'm more than willing to live with it's flimsy construction in exchange for its absolutly stellar image quality. I'm just going to have to be very, very careful how I handle, transport, and store it. Consider her, if you will, as one might the movement of a fine Patek Phillipe timepiece...fragile, but of utterly stunning, worrd class performance.
This one shortcoming notwithstanding, I would opt for this lens every time!

My 90mm Tamron took crisp, detailed macros, but images were soft outside that range. Also, I had trouble with the contacts, every once in awhile the lens needed to be remounted to get it to talk to my Nikon D90. I have a similar problem with my Tammy 17-50mm and didn't want another such lens in my bag. [...]

    Great Macro Lens

    By Tony

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens for Nikon AF:

I needed a macro lens to complete my photography equipment. My budget wasn't to high and I thought that a lens with its capabilities would cost too much.
But I got this lens and I am very happy with it. The price was right and I can do a lot of things with it.

Fantastic macro pictures. Flowers, insects and wherever your imagination takes you.
      Smooth motor, easy to use.
I also use a Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM for the Canon 600D. The results from the 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens on the NIKON D5100 completely match the quality of the Canon, I would also say easier to use. Love the lens.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens for Nikon AF:

I used this at a wedding during the brides hair and make-up and for the detail shots. The quality is fantastic and I love the compression with this macro.
I need to do some research to see why at times it would not open all the way up to 2.8. I thought that a lens would say 2.8-4 or 4-5.6 if there were variances. I didn't need 2.8 when it happened, so it didn't affect the work, quality or look I was going for.
I loved the M and AF focus option by pushing out or pulling in the lens. That is Very handy with a macro.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens for Nikon AF:

I acquired this lens through a friend that got it and never used it for $250. Which is a steal in my opinion but I couldn't argue with him. I have been using this lens for 2 years now with no issues what so ever on my D-7000 and D-300. I am an avid adventurist traveling all over the lower 48 and this lens holds up very nicely. Im big into insects and usually shoot at or above F8 with very elegant DOF. F2.8 is okay but get ready for a photo that is sharp on one single plain. I recommend flash is free handing which I do most of, insects are not to fond of tripods.

This lens is an all around great lens!

I have always loved macro photography. The short time I have owned this, I used it for close ups of flowers. I look forward to when the weather breaks to use it outdoors. I like the ease of switching from manual to auto focus. It does not go onto my Nikon camera as easily as the Nikon lenses but it does go one fairly smoothly and I have not had a problem with that.

I got it about a month ago. I have been taking photos of older B&W photos using a tripod and a Nikon D800. It is critical to keep it still and I have to use the mirror up to keep camera shake down. I have been able to make sharp copies of old family photos. It seems to do a better job than a flatbed scanner. I mostly use manual focus.

                        Works well for portraits too.

This lens is great for macro photography and can also be used as a normal 90mm lens. Good quality for the price and great picture quality. It fills the gap between the shorter and longer size macro lens on the market and is an ideal lens for the photographer that doesn't want to haul the much bigger and heavier 180mm macro around. Fits in a backpack without adding a lot of weight. Would definitely recommend this lens to anyone wanting an all-around macro that is good in a wide range of conditions. Can also be used with a tele-extender for even closer macro shots.

Debabted this over the Nikon 105mm and couldn't justify the additional money for the few times I'll shoot macro. So far the lens is very capable and sharp.

I have just received my lens, but have been thrilled with the quality so far. My first macro lens, so lots to learn, but very happy so far. Auto-focus is a little slow, but I knew that going in.

Nice macro and portrait lens, Nice smooth bokeh at large aperture (at small f numbers ). Fast AF for portrait shots, slow AF for Macro. Relatively light weight compared to other similar products. Till now, no issue with the build quality. Happy about the product.

Bought this as a gift for my wife, but we all love it. It's got great sharpness and speed and extremly easy to handle. My wife and I use it on a D300 and my daughter uses it on her D3100 primarly as a macro and at 1:1 it's great. But it also works well as a potrait lens and for weddings. Definatley can't beat the quality for the price.

The images produced by this lens are wonderful ans very stunning. This lens is a good buy for the price and great images. Buy it

I have been looking for a macro lens for some time and have undertaken a lot of comparison shopping with other lenses. I have used this lens on some very close-up photography and get great clarity and depth of field. I only wish that I purchased it before.

Comments about Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Di Macro Lens for Nikon AF:

This lens is a fantastic value when compared with the Nikon lenses in this category. Great price and feels a lot more solid than what I was expecting.

If I could rate it 4.5, I would; it's not without its flaws.

                                      Pros:
It's my first f/2.8 lens. I own a D80 with the cheap kit lens (18-55 1:3.5-5.6) and a 55-200 1:4-5.6. This lens feels much more solid and produces much better results than either of my other two lenses. Obviously I use them for different applications.

Produces absolutely stunning portraits. Great color and contrast, beautiful bokeh.

                                      Cons:
For macro shots, I'm still struggling with the DOF, because it's virtually non-existant. I'm not sure if that's physics, skill level or lens...

As others have mentioned, the method of switching between AF and Manual is not very intuitive, but it doesn't make any less sense than a AF/M switch on the lens, I guess. You slide the focus ring forward (away from the camera body) to switch to AF, and back toward the camera body to switch back to manual. Not really a con, but certainly not a pro.

Also, Don't be mislead by the fact that the lens is branded with f/2.8. According to the display on my camera and the EXIF information, It's only f/2.8 when focusing at close to infinity. When you're focusing at the minimum distance the best you can get is f/5.6.

All that being said, I would definitely recommend it. Highly.
