Sony ECM-NV1 Original Equipment Directional Microphone for DSR-PD170
The Sony ECM-NV1 is the microphone included with the DSR-PD170. The microphone features a directional polar pattern, minimizing off-axis noise and providing a focused pick up. The 3-pin XLR connector attaches to the microphone input of the PD170.

Look, this isn't going to beat a Sennheiser MKH416... or even an ME66. But what this does is become the perfect on-camera mic for cameras like the new Panasonic AC130/160... or the Canon XF series. The sound is totally adequate for run and gun applications, and it's small size makes it ideal for just about every manufacturer's camera. Even with a wide angle lens, you won't see it.
Warning: needs phantom power.

This mic is used as original equipment on several Sony camcorders including my V1U. The original mic was smashed as I was moving through thick forest. The element cage is thin plastic and it doesn't take much to break it. I looked at other replacement mics but this seemed to be the best bang for the buck.
