Designed primarily for use in lighting kits, this 12.4' Matthews Light/Heavy Triple Riser Kit Stand is compact and light weight. Many MSE Kit Stands employ a brake shoe system for locking off the riser tubes as opposed to pinch castings, thus permitting the use of heavier fixtures.

This is made from such high quality materials. Not too heavy but as solid as a rock. Extends much higher than i expected which is good. I've just purchased another one. Brilliant quality as you would expect from Matthews

      This is no toy !
      Light/Heavy ? So what is it ? !!
Well this light stand is a heavy duty beast.
It can stand the test of time and can accommodate a 7' umbrella with medium strobe or multiple speed lights , without problem.
And it is not made out of steel but heavy gauge aluminum, so the weight is acceptable .
The 3 risers deploy flawlessly, and a small turn of the brakes secures them in place.
Add 3 wheels to this beauty, and you have a pro light stand that looks fabulous and does the job well.

Comments about Matthews Light/Heavy Triple Riser Kit Stand (12.4'):

I have many light stands made by Matthews, from compact lightweight reversible kind to the middle of the road kind.

I got this for one of my heavier lights, I tend to buy stands who's weight limits far exceed my lights because the sway of stands bothers me.

This stand more resembles a c-stand in its size construction, etc.

Make no mistake this is a big stand but is the best weight/size/cost I think you'll find before you step up to the 200+ range of steel stands.

        Matthews stands

Comments about Matthews Light/Heavy Triple Riser Kit Stand (12.4'):

This is a good stand for someone who would be using it with lighter weight equipment on top. I do a lot of work with larger strobes and Softboxes and using this outdoors with a little wind blowing made me uneasy. This is a quality stand but just not for my needs. I returned it and opted out for another Matthews stand that was heavier and made out of steel.

        C-Stand travel substitute

Comments about Matthews Light/Heavy Triple Riser Kit Stand (12.4'):

I usually use c-stands but if I'm traveling or needing my assistants to carry a lot on the go this stand was perfect. It's still fairly long when colapsed but at 7 lbs it is so light!

Comments about Matthews Light/Heavy Triple Riser Kit Stand (12.4'):

I'm a huge fan of Matthews gear. At this point I have a lot of stands, both Matthews and Manfrotto. I like Matthews better because they use brakes vs. pinch fittings at each riser. I have both the steel and aluminum version of the next size down, the light medium kit stands. When I ordered this, I thought I was paying a premium for a SLIGHTLY beefier stand than the light medium that I've been using. My primary use for these stands is for microphone booms, and I was looking forward to a little fatter locking knobs, etc. One of the cameramen that I commonly work with puts a Diva 400 on this very stand. I didn't realize this until this stand arrived and it was much bigger than I expected. I thought an extra forty bucks over the next size down was a premium, but that should have told me I was ordering a far more substantial stand... and this is.

The actual weight is 7.5 lbs. This stand is 17 oz lighter than the light medium STEEL stand, and they both hold the same weight, but this one goes much higher, and has a wider foot-print.

So if you're torn between these two stands, ask yourself what you want it for. If you want height and/or stability, this is clearly the one to get. As a bonus, it weighs a full pound less. Seeing the two side-by-side there's no comparison. This may be one of the better light-stand deals that B&H has to offer.

If I have any complaint, ironically, it's almost too big (at least for my intended use). For holding a mic boom, it's absolutely overkill unless you use a boom at 13-17'... if you do that, then this is definitely the one you want.

Comments about Matthews Light/Heavy Triple Riser Kit Stand (12.4'):

I choose these light stands for my Alien Bee 1600's after reading reviews of the PCB stands. Having used Matthews grip equipment before I had no reservations about buying these aluminum stands. When they arrived I was not disappointed they are very well made and will handle my strobes with the largest soft boxes. They are very solid and do not sway when fully extended even without sandbags(always use sandbags myself). The stands also are steady outside in light wind at the beach. The only thing missing is a rocky mountain leg, good thing I have apple boxes. I have ordered two more for backdrop support to complete my portable portrait studio.
