The 200-500mm f/5-6.3 SP AF Di LD (IF) Lens for Canon EOS from Tamron is an ultra telephoto zoom lens designed to bring distant subjects close. Its minimum focus distance is 8.2' (2.5 m) and its maximum magnification ratio is 1:5 at 500mm. For a lens that covers such long focal lengths, it is relatively compact and lightweight. An internal focus system maintains its compact form as the lens does not extend when focusing. Its optical design consists of two Low Dispersion glass elements which minimize chromatic aberrations and provide sharp, high resolution, high contrast images. The lens is designated "Di" which stands for Digitally Integrated Design and meets the performance characteristics of digital and film SLR cameras. When mounted on a DSLR camera with an APS-C size sensor, it provides a focal length equivalent of 310-775mm.
This lens features a detachable Filter Effect Control Ring. This allows a filter to be rotated to the desired position with the hood still attached, enabling you to easily perform minute adjustments to a polarizer filter. The lens also includes a dedicated lens hood to block stray light from entering the lens and causing flare and a detachable rotating tripod collar and mount to provide stability when shooting at long focal lengths.
The lens has autofocus capability however because it does not have a built-in AF motor, AF will not function with any camera that requires a motor in the lens for autofocus.

Over 4 years ago I started switching my wildlife/everyday backpack over to all Tamron lenses. I went from a pack weighing 36lbs+ down to under 26lbs. I changed over to the Tamron 200-500mm saving 1.3lbs from my previous long range lens. It functions very well with both 1.4X and 2X Tamron pro teleconverters even when stacked. With its lightweight I normally shoot this lens free handed with no problems. I do focus manually most of the time because the auto focus leaves a little to be desired when tracking wildlife, especially birds against the sky. It gets carried almost daily and tends to get thrown around a bit in my truck. Finally this past fall after 10,000+ images the aperture failed. It was fully covered under Tamrons 6 year warranty and is now back up and running smooth as ever. Being an f6.3 lens @ 500mm and non IS it does have a hard time in low light situations and the picture quality suffers. In the daylight however when using 400 ISO I can shoot at 1/500 sec @ f16 or so and the picture quality is very good to excellent. It is light weight and rugged and worth every penny. I have no regrets buying this lens and will be using it for years to come as my primary wildlife lens.

Comments about Tamron 200-500mm f/5-6.3 SP AF Di LD (IF) Lens for Canon EOS:
I chose this lens based on the reviews I read and the price. The lens was made in Japan and is well built. I wasted no time checking this lens out. Lacking image stabilization, I wanted to see how it worked hand held. I was pleasantly surprised to find out, even in late afternoon light, it was fairly sharp and focused quickly on my subjects. To say it was tack sharp, it was not, especially if you want to enlarge your photo. I think lighting plays a big role in just how sharp the picture is; as well as, stability. Next day, I was out at the local AF Base taking pictures of the planes taking off and landing. I got some outstanding shots and found, on a moving target, the auto-focus worked well. If you want to take pictures of fairly stationary subjects, a tri-pod is necessary. At full focus your subject will be sharp but the back ground seems somewhat distorted as in the picture of the Egret. At minimum focus, the detail is much better but the edges of your subject are not crisp and for this reason I can only give this lens a 4 out of 5 stars. Out of more than a thousand shots I still got some great pictures I wish I could share them all. This lens works well with an extender giving it more versatility. I've only had this lens for ten days and it is already one of my favorites.

Comments about Tamron 200-500mm f/5-6.3 SP AF Di LD (IF) Lens for Canon EOS:
I purchased this lens for an upcoming trip to Antarctica. I will be using it with a Canon EOS Rebel T2i. Since I don't leave for another few weeks, I can't comment as to its efficacy in photographing penguins, however the test shots I made were very crisp and clear. Although, it is heavy, as one might expect for a lens of this size, I used it without a tripod or other support and there was no blurring or other evidence of shake.

Comments about Tamron 200-500mm f/5-6.3 SP AF Di LD (IF) Lens for Canon EOS:
I use this lens for wild life photography. It has excellent focusing in bright light and good focusing in fair lighting. In poor lighting manual focusing is a must. I try to shoot at f/11 when ever I can and the results are very sharp. At wide open you have to be very carefull with your focusing. The photo of the Black Skimmer was shot at f/14, 1/1600 of a second and with the Tamron 1.4 tele-extender.

I so far have used the lens for sports photography and some portrait photography on nephews and nieces. It has focused quickly enough for my taste and has taken shots that are sharper in focus and better in color than one of my canon lenses. I haven't even had need to use a tripod with it even in lower light situations.

i was looking for a lens that was good for nature/animal shots, could zoom to 500, and supported autofocus in a price range that I could afford. This lens met all of that criteria and is producing some beautiful shots. I was able to get a beautiful shot of a bald eagle flying around.

Comments about Tamron 200-500mm f/5-6.3 SP AF Di LD (IF) Lens for Canon EOS:
I use my new lens to take photos of wildlife that is usually impossible to approach. It is really great when a bird is perched in the open and I have something to lean the lens on. I have had no problems with the light requirement and find the lens practical overall. It is a bit unwieldy for hiking and focusing is more of a challenge.

Too often we say for the price the lens was good...not here for at any price this lens is outstanding.I own several canon lens in the L classification and this Tammron lens compares very favorably.
I use mostly for landscape and wildlife with my Canon 7D and the lens focus is fast and unbelievely sharp. Naturally you have to set the camera speed at least to 400 and f/8 is the ideal situation for sharp and clear photo's. At 200mm-300mm photos are very clear and sharp and at 500mm with a polarizer filter attached you will get excellent quality.
Due to the light weight of the lens handheld shots are very possible but for really presentation type photo's tripod and automatic shutter release has to be apply.
You will enjoy this product.

If you can't afford, or don't want to carry around, a Canon 500mm prime lens, and you don't use IS (image stabilization) very much, then this lens is for you. This lens also has two LD (low dispersion) elements which gives it the edge in contrast and sharpness versus the Sigma lenses.
