With extraordinarily-high image quality from 2400 dpi resolution, a 3.8 D-max rating, and 48-bit color, the Epson Expression 10000XL Photo Scanner offers everything professional photographers and graphic artists require for high-quality, large-volume scanning.
A reliable performer (rated to 100,000 cycles) that's sure to increase productivity, this hardworking scanner features Epson's exclusive ColorTrue II Imaging System, which combines superior image processing, a Xenon lamp, and Epson MatrixCCD technology for enhanced colors and pinpoint registration. Its 3.8 Dmax delivers a broad dynamic range with excellent shadow detail. And an AutoFocus optics system, when activated, adjusts the focus and captures clear, precise images every time.
The 10000XL's batch scanning function increases productivity by allowing you to make multiple scanned images at once and saving files to a PC (48 35mm negatives, 30 35mm slides, 8 4x5" transparencies, or 6 medium-format transparencies). It is quick, too, scanning an 8.5 x 11" color image at 300 dpi in just under 23 seconds.
The Epson Expression 10000XL scans virtually anything, including reflective media up to 12.2" x 17.2" and transparencies up to 12.2" x 16.5". It also includes both USB and FireWire (IEEE 1394) connectivity for most Windows and Macintosh systems. There's also an optional network card.

I've used a 1640XL for years. It is having problems and I decided to upgrade to the 10000XL. I found 2 main problems with this scanner.
The first has to do with the quality of the scan. The 10000XL introduces some darkening that is apparent in the white areas of the scanned image. I don't know how to say this better. It looks like there is a dirty film on the glass, but there isn't.
The second has to do with the obstacles the engineers put on top of the scanner to make scanning oversized images harder to scan in multiple sections. There is a post sticking up a few inches in the rear. There is also a raised edge on the right and rear sides of the glass.
When I got the first scanner in, I thought I simply had a defective item - it happens. B&H is wonderful about returns, so that was really not a big deal.
The second had the identical problem and I spent quite some time with the folks at Epson on the phone going over it.
I do fine art reproduction, so this is a problem for me. If I were scanning office documents, it wouldn't be such a big deal, but then I wouldn't have spent this much for a scanner.
If I explained this poorly, that does not mean there is not a problem. I have an all Epson shop, so this is very upsetting. I don't have another replacement for my 1640XL.

Comments about Epson Expression 10000XL Photo Scanner:
We use this scanner in our multimedia/graphic design program at the college and we needed one that had a large surface area, lots of good features for higher quality scans (bit depth, resolution, etc.) and was easy to use. This scanner has so far worked great for all of our students. It is fast, scans very well, and is high quality. Works well with Adobe Photoshop CS6 (not 64-bit version though, which could either be Epson's problem or Adobe's) and scanning right into the program. The three modes make it easier to select the features we need depending on the quality of the project. We haven't had a chance to use the film features...but we are excited to in the future. This scanner might be pricey, but it was worth it for the large surface area, quality of the scans, and the speed that we need to get through a group of students in a short amount of time.

Comments about Epson Expression 10000XL Photo Scanner:
We scan medical x-rays on a daily basis. This has, by far, been the easiest scanner for our employees to use. I was concerned about the initial cost, but the reduction of employee time spent at the scanner will work out to be a greater savings over a short period of time. This scanner is fast, easy and of medical grade quality.

Comments about Epson Expression 10000XL Photo Scanner:
Just up and running and liking almost everything about the 10000XL. It is working great for transparencies, fine art and photos. Scanning options are good. Resolution good. Bit Depth good. I work on a Mac running OS X 10.7 and the software that came with it would not install. I had to download new software from Epson (working great now) and am still working around issues with SilverFast (Almost there). Getting the EZcolor software from x-rite working is proving to be the biggest issue and may not be resolved. Overall, I am quite pleased.

I bought this scanner for art reproduction along with my Epson Stylus Pro 9900 printer. Overall the scanner is great with the software providing lot of features and tweaking.
The only thing that I am not happy about is that the scanner is not able to handle shades of yellow / brown properly without adjustment, rest of the colors look great with minimal deviation from standard settings.

Comments about Epson Expression 10000XL Photo Scanner:
The Epson producrs seems to be most best within the parapson 10000 has the best ourlined mesurements for the originals, which none of the other scanners have. At the same time the resolution it has did not satisfy the results I received. Besides it is too heavy to accompany the traveling researcher. I would suggest the Scanner Epson Perfection 750 Pro to modify that it would serve much better if it would have one longer side completely flat like it was made in the scanner Canon Lide 700F. After all it would be possible the originals sized 11,3" by 17"3 scan partially using Epson Perfection 750 and than "glue" the pieces in one as the original is. I personaly consider all products Epson as best quality made but the scanner must be useful for the larger originals bigger that A4.
Comments about Epson Expression 10000XL Photo Scanner:
We have purchased three of these in the past few months. The detail and accuracy are amazing! I have not had good experiences with flatbed scanning for film, but these scanners are incredible. If film is damaged or curved, you can adjust the focus- that is a great feature. My only complaint is that it is difficult to get additional negative carriers/holders. If you want to do any sort of mass-production, I would suggest you order more. The software is easy to use; it has a very gentle learning curve. I was also pleased that it comes with color targets for calibration. An excellent product that gives incredible scans!

We are a quality orientated business that must accurately reproduce photographs for restoration or digitize films of various sizes.
I chose the Expression 10000XL Photo Scanner because of the fine reputation that Epson maintains and the large scan area and high resolution capabilities.
The Silverfast software does an excellent job of profiling for reflectance as well as transparency. The scans are sharp and accurately reproduce the original colors. The software has some very in depth functions which may be difficult for some users to master. In most cases, we found pleasing results with only minimum deviations from the default settings.

Scanner is used as part of my digital media company to convert old photos into slideshows for customers.
Old photos are cleaned up and look great.
Newer photos look as if they were right out of a digital camera!
Comments about Epson Expression 10000XL Photo Scanner:
I bought this to scan watercolor art 15.7x11.5, so I would not have to scan two halves then Photoshop merge them. It is better than my older scanner (and I managed to hook up this scanner by firewire cable) and I love being able to scan the whole piece of artwork. Thanks for making a scanner this wide.
Comments about Epson Expression 10000XL Photo Scanner:
This scanner is going to really help my productivity - I do a lot of digital photo restoration work, and now with this larger scanning bed, I can lay out many more photos at one time. It also handles the oversized old photos that are often attached to paperboard mats, and I can lay large photo albums open on the bed without removing the pages. The scans are fantastic, and having the Silverfast scanning software bundled with the scanner was a real plus.

I cannot wait to begin scanning the many photograph negatives my family has accumulated over the years.
So far I have not discovered anything I dont like about this scanner other than the list price, however purchasing it the discount B&H price made this scanner affordable.
