Product Highlights
  • For use with AF-S and AF-I lenses

The Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S and AF-I Lenses was designed exclusively for use with AF-S and AF-I lenses, and completes the Nikon lineup of 1.4x, 1.7x, and 2.0x compact teleconverters. This teleconverter will maintain full metering and focusing with compatible cameras and lenses, and will also support the VR function found on many of the newer professional lenses.

The AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II allows focal length to be extended by a factor of 1.7 times while retaining a sense of overall comfort in the hand. Many such teleconverters can also have a detrimental effect on the speed of the lens, however the AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II makes available f-stops only 1.5 stops slower.

NOTE: Autofocusing only possible when used with D1, D1X, D1H, D2H, D100, F5, F100, N90s, N80, N75 and N65 AF SLR Cameras (or any newer models).

I primarily bought this for bird photography to extend the reach of my Nikon 2.8 70-200 VR1 lens. It works well with the lens and so far I have been able to get some great shots with this combination. Photos tend to be a little soft if I zoom all the way to 340 and stop down to the lowest f stop but I am able to get beautiful detailed bird photos if I'm not at either of these ends. Although you loose 1 1/2 stops using the teleconverter this was the perfect solution for me as it was must more cost effective than getting a larger lens.

I bought this TC to get more extension from my 70-200 2.8 VR II. I knew from reading the reviews that some degradation of image quality was understood, but after testing and using it extensively with a D800 for about 3 weeks I was not happy with the degree of sharpness that was lost. I tried the TC at an air show and the number of acceptable images dropped greatly - that may have been due to the impact on the AF efficiency. I took it on vacation and shot some bird images with it - the same results. I had a great opportunity to test it side by side with just the bare 70-200 when I found a pair of trumpeter swans preparing to roost for the night in a wildlife refuge. The distance was significant and the birds were stationary so I had plenty of time to swap the lens with TC back and forth with the lens without it, keeping the same basic settings. I noticed a bit of color on the necks of the birds. Through the lens you could see that they were wearing blue bands with white numbers on them. Images shot with the TC were not sharp enough to distinguish the numbers well - they were unreadable. Images shot with just the 70-200 and cropped showed the numerals sharply! I developed an even greater appreciation for the capabilities of the 70-200 alone! Back went the TC to B&H and all went smoothly on the return. This is the first time I have been disappointed in Nikon gear. Perhaps it was not a good unit.

    Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S & AF-I Lenses:

The TC-17E II is a nice way to add additional reach to a 70-200 4 vr.

Beware of low light and/or low contrast situations. Your mileage will definitely vary by Nikon body. D610 autofocuses okay but d7000 struggle, sometimes failing completely.

    Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S & AF-I Lenses:

The loss of a stop and half really has little negative impact. A bump or two of ISO and problem solved.

I love the extra reach and as long as I don't pixel peep, the results seem okay, not fantastic, but okay. I don't often crop at 200-300%.

I am using a Nikon D300 (cropped sensor), 70-200 VR1, so my effective reach is 510mm with the tele.

My bottom line is that it's not super-glued to my lens so I will use it when the situation calls for it.

I use this in combination with the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII and can only confirm most previous reviews: It works great if you close the aperture 1 stop, and if you avoid zoomming in completely.
All the usual precautions for tack sharp images with tele lenses, such as mirror up, remote shutter release and a tripod are of course a must here even more because of the extended range.
Also, be aware that the depth of field will be more shallow too with extended focal range.

Works OK on a budget. I returned mine and bought an older 600mm and the difference is significant, especially on the D800. In a pinch with good light images are usable but "soft'.

The 1.7x tc is an excellent solution for extending my "reach" on my 70-200 f/2.8. It attaches quickly, focuses quickly with a negligible 1.5 stops loss of light. I highly recommend this TC as a cost effective solution to extending an already great lens.

I purchased and returned a Nikon 80-400 mm lens because images were not sharp. My next purchase was the 1.7 teleconverter that combined with a 70-200 mm f/2.8 delivered the quality that I wanted. I ordered the 1.7 because my lens is the first model and I didn't want soft edges that may have resulted from using the 2x tele. We are convinced of the quality of Nikon glass.

I like the idea but it does not work well for sport photography.most (not all) are out of focus or soft and not sharp like the results I get with the lens without the converter. Might work well if you do not need to focus quickly. As always B+H stood behind the sale and allowed me to return it. I might of got a bad one.

                        Comments about Nikon TC-17E II 1.7x Teleconverter for AF-S & AF-I Lenses:

I had a Sigma 120-400mm that was fine as a telephoto. However, it took up a lot of room and was very heavy. What sealed its fate was when I did a side by side with my 70-200 f4. With cropping , the 70-200 was sharper. But I still wanted the reach , enter this teleconverter. It is awesome. Better reach. Just as sharp or sharper than the Sigma. Less room, lighter , what's not to love. I'm still learning but I think I made the right choice. While the stop loss of 1.5 is sort of inevitable, my primary use is on sunny days when the loss makes no difference. That plus the stabilization in the 70-200... Wish I could use it with other lenses though. P.S. contrary to the nikon website, autofocus does work with my lens and the D7000. A tad slower but it hasn't been a problem. I went for the import and saved the $200+ and gained the B&H warranty. Did I mention the it delivered from B&H 2 days early. Awesome.

Used with my 500/4 it is as sharp as the 1.4x, and sharper than even the new 2.0x.
Expect to use it with the 70-200/2.8 when bringing the big lens is impractical.

I purchased this a few weeks ago & it is working flawlessly. Photos on my 70-200 VR1 are still very sharp, still focuses quickly. No issues as of yet. I purchased the Grey market version and I am more than pleased with performance. I shot several games at a local soccer tournament with very pleasing results...

I use this with my 70-200 F4 Nikkor on a D800. It seems sharp at all zoom levels. I usually expose at f:8-16 I have made a couple of 13x19 prints and posted a few shots on the web as JPEGS and the images are indistinguishable from those made with any version of a 300. The number of times I need 400mm compared to 340mm is negligible. Carrying this extender with the 70-200 beats carrying the 80-400 or the 200-400 by a mile - although in theory those lenses should be sharper and have more detail than the 70-20 plus extender. If you travel...this is very handy.

Gives added reach with little loss of image quality or weight. I use it more than my 1.4 teleconverter. (In fact, I no longer carry the 1.4 most of the time.) AF is still fast and accurate on the Nikon D800. I primarily use it for wildlife and birds. I've only attached it to the Nikon Telephoto AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D ED-IF. It mates very well with that lens.
