Sigma Normal 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS USA

You Pay: $349.00

To maintain high optical performance from infinity to close-up 1:1 macro photos without accessories, the Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG incorporates a "Floating Internal Focusing" (FIF) system. As a result, the lens also features a non-rotating front lens group which makes it easier to work with polarizing filters, and has a focus limiter to narrow down the broad focus range. And the improved minimum aperture of f/45 now provides improved depth of field.

This lens is designed as a high-quality primary macro lens, good for film or digital SLR cameras. The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This macro lens is specially coated to get the best color balance whilst cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

Close focus capability of 7.4"
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghosting caused by reflections from the surface of digital image sensors
Screw-in hood also accepts a 72mm filter in the front of the lens hood

Purchased for general use as a 50mm normal lens, and macro work. Used with Canon Digital Rebel and 5D MkII bodies. Initial use on my 1.6 crop factor Digital Rebel body showed good, but not great results. The 5D MkII full frame sensor body exhibited better results, but not as good as I had hoped! After examing numerous pictures taken with the 5D MkII body, it was apparent the lens was "front-focusing I ended up setting the focus "microadjustment" to +5 (toward back) on my 5D MkII body, and the image quality is now excellent and actually better than I had expected. I also noticed degradation when using an old (but good!) Hoya Skylight filter, which seemed to cause the focus to revert back to "front-focusing."

This Sigma 50mm macro lens is capable of producing extremely high quality images, but is very sensitive to mis-focusing. I had no difficulties with autofocus other than the slight front-focusing on all pictures, which I resolved with the body microadjustment. Focusing at far and macro distances is now extremely accurate, but can be slow. For macro work it is generally better to focus manually, so you can center your depth of field.

The hood is OK and will accept a 72mm lens cap, unlike what some others say! Use 55mm filters on the front of the lens, and NOT on the hood! Placing a 72mm filter on the front of the hood will create flare issues!

The image sharpness produced with my "microadjusted" Canon 5D MKII is fantastic and uniform from center to edge at all apertures, from infinity to 1:1 Macro:
    F2.8 VG
    F4.0 VG to Excellent
    F5.6 Excellent
    F8.0 Excellent
    F11 Excellent
    F16 VG to Excellent
    F22 VG
    F32 & 45 F to P (Don't know why Sigma even included this capability!)

The depth of field is absolutely tiny with the f-stop at 2.8, which can be a lot of fun. The color is a bit off and the pictures can be a bit soft, even at higher f-stops.
One great feature that doesn't get mentioned is that it has a max f-stop of 45! Sounds impractical, but when you want to take a photograph of something stationary surrounded by a lot of moving objects, you can get a really pretty picture @ f/45 30s shutter.

I have nothing good to say about the autofocus. The autofoucus is terrible, especially in macro and I've found the it focuses slightly in front of the subject in a portrait type setting. It's incredibly noisy and it takes forever to focus, due to its wide focal range and slowness.

For the price, I recommend this lens, but if price isn't a concern, you want the Canon 100mm.

Excellent macro that shoots sharp close ups. Small, lightweight and fits in bag nicely. Shoots good wide open or stopped down. Works well with LED video light to provide extra light when needed.

Bought lens for Macro photography. Wonderful, wonderful
lens! Love the build quality, fits tight to the camera body (Canon T3i) takes very good landscape shots as well!
A little heavier than I expected but once on the Canon, balances out very well! Does have a tendency to "focus hunt" but using the focus limiter or manual, problem solved!!!

I am a professional photographer that uses my company's equipment at work, but needed a macro for my personal work. After reading many reviews on B&H,etc[*]I decided to go with this lens over the Canon 50mm 2.8. I went with other reviewers who mentioned they needed the 1:1 ratio.I shoot mostly food and close-ups of letterpress- works great for this purpose. I read that many people who shoot close-ups of insects are bothered by the noise in the auto-focus-but this obviously not an issue for me because I am shooting inanimate objects:)

I use this exclusively for dental macro photography with the sigma macro ring lite. I purchased this because at the time I purchased this the sigma ring lite had more bang than the canon. It is excellent. The images are terrific. How close I have to be is obviously not an issue for me. I have used it for flowers and such and it is fine but it's main use is pictures of teeth. Perfect for that.

Sharp corner to corner and no falloff on my 50D. It just feels right. I use it on close-up, people, walking around. At f2.8, it gives nice blurred background. Some may find it slow to focus but it has not been a problem for me.

This is a superbly sharp macro lens, perhaps the sharpest lens I have. The autofocus, though fast and accurate, is a little noisy. However, I always use manual focus for macro shots, so that does not matter to me at all. This focal length (50mm) is somewhat wide for a macro lens, especially on a full-frame camera. I find it perfect for food and product shots.

This lens is an older design and therefore does not have the wonderfully smooth bokeh that Sigma is now famous for. If it did, I would use it for environmental portraits too (I prefer the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens for that purpose).

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

This lens takes great photos, but the build quality is mediocre. The plastic construction is not bad, but metal would have been better.
Also, if you attach the lens hood, you are no longer able to attach the lens cap. Finally, the front element moves quite far during focusing, which can make close-up work trickier.
With that said, for the price, this lens takes excellent photos, with no distortion and almost no chromatic aberration.

The lense overall is good but for the current price I would recommend the Canon 60mm macro. Focus is slow and not good in the Macro mode
