Sigma Normal 50mm f/2.8 (D) EX DG Macro Autofocus Lens for Sony Alpha & Minolta Maxxum Series USA

You Pay: $329.00

To maintain high optical performance from infinity to close-up 1:1 macro photos without accessories, the Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG incorporates a "Floating Internal Focusing" (FIF) system. As a result, the lens also features a non-rotating front lens group which makes it easier to work with polarizing filters, and has a focus limiter to narrow down the broad focus range. And the improved minimum aperture of f/45 now provides improved depth of field.

This lens is designed as a high-quality primary macro lens, good for film or digital SLR cameras. The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This macro lens is specially coated to get the best color balance whilst cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

Close focus capability of 7.4"
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghosting caused by reflections from the surface of digital image sensors
Screw-in hood also accepts a 72mm filter in the front of the lens hood

This a sharp lens. I use this lens quite a bit and I am happy with the performance that it provides. There seems to be equal sharpness across the frame, and this is certainly a good thing. There are a few cons, though. I have noticed is a bit of blue fringing under certain light conditions. It's not horrible, but I notice it. The lens also does not attach to my camera with a firm click. Sometimes I have to try to attach it several times before my camea recognizes there is a lens attached. I have not had this problem with other lenses. Overall, it's a great lens for the money!!

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/2.8 (D) EX DG Macro Autofocus Lens:

I just bought a Sony A77M2 body with a Tamron 90 mm Macro to do a lot of copy work in addition to normal family photos. The Tamron is fantastic, but I overlooked that on a copy stand the field of view is only about 4x6 inches. So I added the Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro which will cover a 8.5 x 11 photo or document ( and smaller). The sharpness is everything one could want, and I needed the focus limiter switch for the copy stand. But the rest of the story is I like this Sigma coupled with the A77II even better than the Sony 16-50 f2.8 kit lens for outdoor travel. The Sigma is about 70mm (35 equivalent) and great for people pictures, and incredible close focusing and is lighter and easier to handle than the Sony zoom. It auto focuses very fast, I was very pleasantly surprised that the A77II has a teleconverter button on the back that because of the 24 Megapixel sensor can instantly call up 1.4x and 2X digital zoom ( that is then a 100 or 140 mm 35 mm tele ) with plenty of pixels for extremely sharp typical 4x6 prints and probably larger, but I have done only this one attached print at 8.5 x 11 original and it was shot with the digital zoom 2 x tele on the A77II.I will let my first photo session shot of a dinner guest in my outdoor salad bowl shot with the Sigma Macro at f22 and flash after dinner! tonight!

Feels cheap and is a bit slow. Not a professional so I can't speak to quality or macro capabilites. Wish I got a faster piece of glass in 50mm

I've done a photographyc book on Bolivian Orchids two months ago with this lens.

The fact that it isn't HSM plays little when it comes to Macro...since I've worked most of the times in MF.

            Good resolution....good manufacturing.
Only drawback is the fact that with its screew hood on, cannot use front cap...but it's just a matter of getting acquainted...

I use this product on a Sony Alpha 900 camera to take pictures of small bugs and close ups of flowers. You can get up really close and still focus. It takes a sharp picture. I haven't found anything bad about it yet. A much better price than comparible sony lenses. I haven't had it long, so I don't know about rugged or how long it will last, but it appears good.
