Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Pentax AF

You Pay: $419.00

The Tamron 28-300mm XR Di lens replaces the popular XR LD Ultra Zoom version, and has now been improved to include Tamron's "Di" design. Digitally integrated design is the designation that Tamron uses for lenses that feature the improved optical design that meets the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras, as well as film cameras. When used with APS-C size (standard) digital SLR cameras, the lens provides an angle of view equivalent to approximately 43-465mm, covering the standard-to-ultra-telephoto range with no sacrifice of quality or aperture range.

This lens is ultra-compact and light-weight, with a constant minimum focus distance of 1.6' (0.5 m) and a high maximum magnification of 1:2.9. The remarkable achievements are brought about through XR (extra refractive index) glass and efficient use of aspherical lenses. Size is reduced 25%, weight 27% and filter diameter was decreased from 72mm to 62mm. The ideal "all-in-one" zoom lens, for indoor and outdoor use.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Pentax AF:

Good, all purpose walk around lens - can be used in almost any circumstance.
Good sharpness through range. Just a bit "clunky" in autofocus at times, but nothing major. Still getting used to variations in depth of field through range but that is probably more a matter of practice than a problem with the lens - it has a very extended zoom range.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Pentax AF:

This lens is perfect for everything that I do. I live on a lake and when taking pictures of the wildlife, I am constantly going from close up to zoom and moving to stationary. This lens is actually the second Tamron 28-300mm lens I have bought. The first was for my film SLR many years ago and finally felt I needed a new one. It could only be better as a 28-400mm.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Pentax AF:

I use the lens as a "walking around" lens. I also realize that an F:/3.5 lens has limitations. And is super for outdoor photo taking. Indoors, I have to move the ISO up to between 400-800 to get anything worth looking at. Outside the lens works well at ISO 100 in daylight at around F:/6.3 to F:/8. I am finding at F:/8 and F:/11 and ISO 200 to 400 the lens performs well. Much below ISO 200 and you'll have to move your speed down and shoot almost wide open... and at 300mm or all the way out you need a speed of at least 1/450 or 1/500 to stop any camera movement. Remembering the rule of thumb of camera speed equals or is faster than the longest MM reach of your telephoto lens. I have attempted to "violate" the rule of thumb with mixed results..in other words uneven exposures. For me the lens did AF fine - but you have to be careful of just what the AF is focusing on - if you use backgrounds that have much contrast - then the AF will pick up on the background and may leave the subject out of focus. I use spot focusing and try to find something on the subject that has a lot of contrast and use that spot to get the AF to work. This technique seems to be working just fine. At times the lens would "hunt" for the subject I wanted in focus...I guess my ESP was not strong enuff to "tell" the lens what I wanted to be in focus. I was shooting a baseball game thru netting behind home plate. The AF would sometimes "seek" the netting instead of the players on the field. This can be frustrating and cause missed shots. I used the technique of zooming back to 28mm to allow the lens to see the whole field and then re-zoom and refocus on the subject - once I had the subject in focus - I zoomed in and shot away - I also moved away from the netting - and had no further problems. BTW I did use the lens in a "macro" fashion - it is not like a close up macro that you might be used to using - but does deliver good usable shots close up using the tele aspect of the lens. Would not recommend this lens for indoor professional work - unless you have a separate flash or studio floods. This lens would not work well in say wedding photography inside a church without a large flash (strobe) separate from the camera. And some folks do not allow flash during the ceremony - so.... be your own judge on this one. Sporting events - if you are pre-focused on a point and the play moves into that point then good. If you try to focus as the play moves - not so good - so, sports that are slower moving - golf tourneys, gymnastics (if you are pre-focused).. stuff like that - football, basketball, hockey, not so good.. would be a challenge to produce anything worth looking at.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Pentax AF:

I had one of these for a few years before it accidently went into the Pacific Ocean with me. I use this on my Pentax film and digital cameras (yes I had to replace the camera also). It doesn't get as wide as an 18 mm on a digital camera but it more than makes up for it with the 400 mm telephoto. It operates fast and smooth in either auto & manual focus. I tried for 2-years getting by without this lense using the 18-200 but I just had to get another 28-300. It is compact & convenient for wildlife, scenic, action, and even close-up photos. If you're looking for a lens to get you from your factory 18-50 lens up to 50-400, you'll appreciate and enjoy this lens.

I bought this lens in anticipation of a full frame Pentax by now (thanks for disappointing me Richo) but was amazed at how sharp it is. It is easily as sharp as my 40mm Pentax prime lens. I used it for a 3/4 studio portrait and its sharp still at 30x40.

I expected a slight loss of image quality with an all-in-one lens at the extremes, but not here. Compared head to head with a 70-300 Pentax and a Tamron as well, and I could tell no difference. Fewer lost opportunities fumbling to change lenses. Great buy.

This is the second Tamron Lens I have purchased. Tamron builds lenses which will rival any of the best known brands. As far as I know Tamron does not make cameras and concentrates on optics. They do a great job of making very high quality lenses. I am using this lens for landscape, architecture, and very close-up details. It is an all around great lens.
I mostly use a tripod so the slow f/3.5-6.3 is not an issue, but hand held has not been a problem.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Pentax AF:

I was a skeptic when it came to purchasing an all in one lens. In fact I have been researching the my lens options for over 1 year now trying to decide if this would be a good use of my money. But, after planning my family trip to Florida I thought this would be the best trip to prove this theory wrong. And it worked!
This lens is perfect for an all in one lens especially when traveling with the family to Florida and wanting up close shots. Due to the crowds and quick movement through the parks, time is not always on your side to capture that awesome picture of your kids that some shots require. This was not the case with this lens. I was able to zoom in to Shrek and take up close pictures from "very far away". Family pictures came out beautiful and clear like my factory lens but, with a lot more options for zooming into the subject during the shot. Color patterns when reviewing from CS5 were perfect with each shot allowing the camera and lens to work flawlessly on the subject. I was able to take a picture of my kids with several characters capturing the moment perfectly with this lens. Having the zoom options available and not having to worry about switching lens to accommodate the crowd or location I was provided or limited to make each moment turn out brilliant. This lens captured wonderful pictures for my family and I to cherish for years to come. And most of all, my shoulder was saved not having to carry three different lens like I normally would.
Overall, I was a skeptic for the all in one lens, but after using this lens on our family trip, I will not be placing this it in a pouch for quite some time.

                          Dear friends,
This is really a good lens. This lens provides a wide zoom range, has a minimum length of 3.3" and weighs about 1 lb. It is not very fast with a maximum aperture of F 3.5 at 28 mm and 6.3 at 300mm but when used with a Pentax cameras the automatic focus works well under most lighting conditions. It has produced good images in most situations. Although it focuses to 1.6 feet throughout the zoom range, to provide a 2.9 magnification ratio at 300 mm.Overal we are pleased with the Tamron AF28-300 and would recommend it to anyone that wants one lightweight lens to cover a wide zoom range.

I chose this lens because I like to photograph my son playing baseball. Although the season hasn't started yet, I can tell by the photos I've taken so far that this was the right choice. Whichever side of the field I'm on, I'll be able to photograph my son where ever he is on the field. I'm looking forward to the season starting.

since putting this lens on my camera, I have only had it off a couple of times and that was for getting a super macro shot that this one would not do. It is the perfect lens for me for a wide range of shooting. At full telephoto, I find I do need a tripod, but for those times when I don't have it with me, holding extra still usually makes for a passable shot.

I had an older Tamron 28-200mm film version and lost it in camping accident. Since I am now digital I upgraded to the 28-300mm XR Di. More power, much sharper image, much smaller, 62mm vs.72mm on the old lense. Great all-around lens.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Pentax AF:

I bought a limited edition red Pentax K-x back when they debuted. I liked the idea of a unique color, but I was disappointed that most retailers did not offer the limited edition cameras (red, white, or blue) with multiple lenses. So, I got the stock Pentax 18-55mm lens and nothing more. Although the quality of the Pentax K-x (especially for the price) is great, but the stock lens offered less zoom than my old, previous non-DSLR camera.

I looked at purchasing a Pentax brand zoom lens but theirs seem to lose a lot on the close side, and to be honest I'm not a real photography buff and don't want to be changing lenses fifty times a day. What I was looking for was a good lens that still allowed me to shoot pictures at a normal (3-4') focal length, but added a lot of zoom. Per a recommendation from a co-worker, I ended up with this Tamron 28-300mm lens.

The lens is essentially plug and play, so if you're a dummy like me there's not much to getting up and running. The lens comes with a big "sun shade" that screws on to the end of the lens. It does a good job of blocking the sun in outdoor photos, but indoors it can block the stock flash, and putting on and removing the lens cap with it on is a pain in the rear too. I also picked up a clear filter for the lens, to protect it from scratching.

300mm zoom is pretty incredible. During a recent high school football game I was able to get some great photos without leaving the stands, and the 28mm close end is comparable to the stock lens' close focal length. It's not a macro lens by any stretch of the imagination, but at least you don't have to be 6+ feet away like with the Pentax 55mm-300mm.

I'm not a photography expert and I'm sure there are a lot of technical numbers I'm missing, but as a beginner/enthusiast I can tell you that this lens adds the range, depth and zoom to my Pentax that I felt the stock lens was missing. I do not carry the 18mm-55mm with me when I go out; I leave the Tamron connected 24/7.
