The Sigma EM-140 DG Ring Flash is ideal for photographing subjects in fine detail - close-up photography - and is extremely effective for scientific and medical applications.
Dual flash tubes can fire simultaneously or separately. Using only one flashtube creates modeling, which can give a three-dimensional feeling to the subject. The Modeling Flash function makes it possible to check for reflections and shadows before actually taking the flash picture.
A wireless flash function is also available, where the EM-140 DG is used as master and the EF-500 DG Super as a slave unit for creating fine shadow details. High Speed Synchro and Exposure compensation functions are also available for advanced flash photography.

Virtually the same as the Canon system for $100 less. Fast recycle times, good ergonomics, deep features andcontrol to let you vary power or turn of lamps. Feels like asuperior product, build quality is excellent. Adapter ringsare used by retractable grips which make it a breeze todetach the front flash element, great innovation system there.Comes with a bag of very high quality, great addition to analready excellent package.Highly recommended for portraits and specialty Macro work.

Problems Encountered: It would be a good add on to have an AF assist beam, but Iguess that's not the primary use of this flash. AF is speedywith the 30D.Could have a bit more rings than the included two, speciallysince its a grooved system.Manual could be a little more specific on how to turn lampson or off but eventually you figure it out.

I bought this ringflash to replace a Sunpak DX-12R, which worked fine, but was getting long in the tooth and lacked TTL. As the other reviewer mentions, the biggest drawback to this ring flash is the light does not output in a ring, but rather, it bursts from two small spots on either side of the ring-shaped lens adapter. Not only do you not get the "ringflash effect", but you don't get a 360 degree light field on your subject. I shoot insects in the field and a 360 degree light source is essential. The focus assist lamps are weak to say the least and add little to the ability to focus reliably. I found that my once accurate lens struggled to grab a focus point with the meager light coming from this unit. It may be great for portraits and fill-flash work, but in the field and real macro work (not including maxillo-facial and dental photography) this just wasn't what I was looking for. The build quality was excellent, and I liked the all in one construction, but the lighting effect was too meager for my purposes. I'll be listing it on [...] shortly as I'm past the 30-day limit at B&H, otherwise I'd return it for store credit!

Very easy to use, easy setup, and very high quality lighting for portraits. Easy to create my own effects with individual settings for left and right lighttubes. Two tumbs up!
One little drawback, though: the adapter ring has no possibility to attach a filter on the outside. This means you have to set the adapter outside of the filters, and this makes it difficult to control the settings with an adjustable filter type.

The plastic foot is very cheap and could easily break. You must be very careful when putting the device on and off your camera shoe.
The light itself is ok and has a number of controls. It seemed to work well for some items and not as well for other items. I am using the 180 MM fixed macro lens and it is a little far away from the subject and I am not certain yet what the results will be under all conditions.

I use this for quick and easy portrait work and macro.
In portrait work the flash doesn't produce those nice circular eye highlight as it comes out as two small lights instead. The illumination, however, is good and controllable. For macro work it is very good with nice even lighting even at very close work 1:5. For the money it is great flash and the only one that fits a 77mm filter thread in that price range. It clips on and off very easily.
The back screen is the worst aspect as the menu options are a pain to access and I hate having to cycle through them to get the one I want or back to the start. The buttons are also rather fiddly. Also beware of severe vignetting with the 77mm attachment on for lenses over 50 mil or so.
