The Sigma EM-140 DG Ring Flash for Nikon AF cameras is ideal for photographing subjects in fine detail - close-up photography - and is extremely effective for scientific and medical applications.
Dual flash tubes can fire simultaneously or separately. Using only one flashtube creates modeling, which can give a three-dimensional feeling to the subject. The Modeling Flash function makes it possible to check for reflections and shadows before actually taking the flash picture.
A wireless flash function is also available, where the EM-140 DG is used as master and the EF-500 DG Super as a slave unit for creating fine shadow details. High Speed Synchro functions are also available for advanced flash photography.
55mm and 62mm adapter rings are included with the flash; 52mm, 67mm, 72mm and 77mm adapters are sold separately.

More compact and easier to carry and set-up than the Nikon R1C1 system. Works satisfactorily in the TTL and manual modes.
Instructions are not complete. Does not explain the flash operation when using AIS lenses (I use the Nikon D2x and the D300 which can be used with AIS lenses and use manual focus to better control the focus plane.)
Not as flexible as the R1C1 system in controlling off camera flashes.

I bought my unit in March of this year and it worked beautifully until last week, when the left flash tube kicked the bucket. I'm contacting Sigma as we speak, since the product is still under warranty. Its a shame because the unit worked beautifully for extreme macro photography. However I've been using it with the right flash tube only, and its been okay.
As a side note, this unit is a little hard to figure out at first, and the "manual" provided is less than useless. Its definitely a learn-as-you-go product.
Whether it was really worth it or no will depend on the repair quote Sigma gives me.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash for Nikon AF:
Good for close-up macro photography and has a strong enough flash/guide number to use as fill light on portraits. That was actually one of the reasons that this ring flash appealed to me. Check the guide numbers of the cheaper flashes that use reflected light from a speedlight or other flash. It seems to have quite a bit more power. Illumination seemed even and well distributed with no hot spots. It attaches to a filter ring sized for your lens threads, so I had to buy a correct adapter for my lens (77 mm). It does come with two adapter rings, but they didn't fit my particular lens. Check this when you buy to make sure it will fit. You can expect some light shadowing typical of almost any ring flash, but nothing unusual.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash for Nikon AF:
Easy to use. Great flash and have taken about 50 pictures so far. I had to buy a 52mm adapter but then lens cap wouldn't fit in adapter, so I bought a 49mm snap cap and it worked perfect. That was the only drawback.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash for Nikon AF:
I use this for dental photography both intra and extraoral. I was using an old Nikon SB-29s but wanted to try this as it is TTL. It works quite well but tends to underexpose; I am hoping that with experience I can overcome this. Construction is a little less robust than the Nikon and switching to right or left side only has to be done through the menu rather than by a switch. However I am enjoying the flash; TTL is very handy.

It was a pleasure just to put the batteries and connect the flash to my Nikon D40 camera. The instructions were superb and I immediatly started enjoying taking pictures with a clear uniform illumination with a Macro lens.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash for Nikon AF:
I haven't used this ring flash extensively as I only received it a couple of weeks ago and haven't had the time or need to use it a lot. I can say that I am very happy with how easy it was to install and use right out of the box. The manual isn't the most well-written one I've read before but it gets you where you need to be. I did have a question about its settings and my Nikon D7000 and felt the need to call Sigma direct. The guy I spoke to was fantastic and made me felt secure about buying a product from them. I also like the fact that all the components are light in weight and will not weigh me down after hand-holding my camera after a period of time. The price point is also attractive as it seems as though I am getting a lot of bang for my buck.

This ring flash came exactly as described. It fits really well on my Nikon 105mm macro. It's easy to set up and the case that come with it is great. For dental photos, it permits to take pictures without any shadows. 5*

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash for Nikon AF:
Use for flower and other macro photography. I had been aiming other flashes and shooting in natural light - but wanted a full-light capability which this unit nicely provides. I was trying to decide between the Nikon R1 system and this - and went with this for it's quicker set-up and the fact its less bulky when walking around. Its very quick/easy to attach and simple to use. Shutting off either side flash is simple.
I am using it with a Nikon D80 and 60mm Macro lens.

I'm using this ring light mostly for flowers and macro photography.
It worked just great right out of the box without looking at the manual with the default TTL settings.
The only thing keeping it from being a 5 Star is the manual in the English version.

I returned the flash, not because it isn't an excellent product (already have one from preivious), but because B&H salesman didn't know or offer that parts were available to fix the flash. All I needed was a hotshoe - found one for $8.

Comments about Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash for Nikon AF:
This macro flash was easy to attach to the camera and use. The instructions were simple, and the features were very similar to nikon flash features. I tried it on my Nikon D5000, taking close up pictures of a miniature rose. It was interesting to try the different settings. I got some very different effect, and will have to experiment more. Overall, I was very pleased with the lighting this flash provided. If you don't want to spend the money on one of the more expensive flashes, this one does an excellent job.

I'm a dentist, I use this flash for dental photo, and Macro Ring Flash standardizes all my photo indipendently by room's light.
The Macro Ring Flash isn't great for to have an immage of the premolar region photographing the front teeth, because flattens the image and doesn't contributes to the images depth.
