The two-section Manfrotto 196AB-2 Articulated Arm articulated arm supports 3.3 lbs @ full extension and weighs less than 1 lb. It also benefits from the extra versatility given by the sliding extension system which allows easier positioning of lighting fixtures even in awkward and tight spaces.
Maximum Length is 23.8 inches, and the bottom 5/8" spigot (compatible with the Superclamp, sold separately), also has a 1/4" thread.

Comments about Manfrotto 196AB-2 Articulated Arm - 2 Sections, Without Camera Bracket:
I like how versatile and handy this is. Once can manipulate it to do about any angle and position. I even could change the orientation of the connections some to make left and right handed pairs for holding clamps on opposing sides of an item. The pins going into something like the super clamps takes a little figuring out, but that's mostly paying attention to orientation of the flat sides of the pins and how they line up with screw down knobs of the clamps.

I purchased four of them for LumaPro 160 strobes to light a gymnasium for high school basketball games. They stay tight and in place and are light weight.

I'm very happy with this articulated arm by Manfrotto. It was very reasonably priced and the build quality is solid. The different female threads on each end provide added flexibility.

These handy arms are just what the physician described for getting camera/lighting kit into juuust the right location. They neeed a super clamp to be most useful.

Comments about Manfrotto 196AB-2 Articulated Arm - 2 Sections, Without Camera Bracket:
This review may not be all that helpful to photographers, but I am an artist and use this double articulated arm in conjunction with the Manfrotto super clamp to mount an umbrella to my paint box for outdoor painting. The quality of the arm and super clamp is like American made used to be, and I have found it to be the best setup so far for attaching an umbrella to an outdoor easel or paint box. The articulated arm stays where I adjust it, as do the adjustments on the super clamp, even in fairly windy conditions. It is very lightweight, and easy to carry in my backpack. I highly recommend it for the application I have described.

I use two of these with Bogen super clamps to put small strobes (Nikon SB-800s) into spaces that are too small for light stands. Use it with super clamps and Manfroto rapid adaptors, plus FLM mini-ball heads.

Do you have a light you want to mount without using a light stand? Do you want to use your camera without a tripod? Do you have microphones you want to mount?
Chances are, at least one of those is yes.
Get yourself the Bogen superclamp and you can mount this puppy just about anywhere.

Great product with a number of uses. Easy to use and combines nicely with a wide range of other grip equipment. Wish it could hold a bit more weight but it does the job again and again.

Comments about Manfrotto 196AB-2 Articulated Arm - 2 Sections, Without Camera Bracket:
The Arm allows complete 3D placement
of the shoe mounted flashes which are
so useful because of the modern TTL
features of the DSLR cameras. It is very
thought out for universal operation having
1/4x20" in one end and 3/8" in the other.
Add the Bogen miniclamp allows the Arm to be
placed on any simple pole or tripod leg. I would
hope Bogen would make the Arm with longer
tubes(see figure) or at least one to be double
their present length( ca 11")

Works very well so far with SuperClamp for mounting Speedlights, gobos, etc. to a lightstand or anything else a SuperClamp can grip. Very flexible placement and holds well.

The middle joint is the only one that is adjustable for length and rotation. The two end joints cannot be adjusted for length, only rotation.
