I've had a Leica M4-P since 2003, but I always stuck with my hand held Sekonic 508. Since I was using the Leica more frequently, I figured it was only a matter of time until I lost the Sekonic. I was also tired of carrying the meter around and juggling the meter/camera. I took the plunge and decided to go for the VC Meter II. I previously read that it's almost as quick as using the meter on the M6. I haven't looked back since I bought it. Easy and quick to use, and it has a low profile on the camera. The LED is bright and doesn't wash out in bright sunlight. The f-stop dial is improved over the original VC Meter with click stops. The ISO setting is more firm and not as easy to accidentally change, unlike the original VC Meter. All of my exposures have also been dead on, in all types of lighting conditions. I like how firm it mounts in the hot shoe, making me feel confident that it won't fall off.

      Expertise: Advanced amatuer

Problems Encountered: Accidentally changed the ISO dial while carrying the camera on my shoulder. Now I double check it before I shoot. Would prefer to the shutter dial to also have click stops. I would also like to see the mount on the meter to have some screw-down mechanism like some flashes do.

At first I was very excited about receiving my VC Speed Meter II. It fits my Leica M2 beautifully. It's tiny, unobtrusive and simple to use. However, when tested for accuracy using a gray card, an M6, a Pentax Digital Spotmeter, my Nikon with DP12 head and a Gossen LunaPro F, the Speed Meter is one stop too optimistic from LV8orLV9 to LV6 or so, and goes on to consistently underexpose by two stops down to my testing limit at LV3. I was expecting accuracy at least as good as with my "obsolete" equipment, so I am a bit disappointed. What I have is an elegant quick reading equivalent of a circa 1955 selenium meter: accurate enough at mid-day, but otherwise needs some help.

        Amazing Amazing Amazing!

Comments about VC Speed Meter II (Silver):

I first used the Voigtlander VC Speed Meter with my friend's Leica M4. It is incredibly intuitive to use.

When I got my leica I didn't hesitate to buy a new one. WHY?

It simply works amazingly well. I've NEVER had it fail to provide me with correct exposure information. It's very accurate.

If I knew you, I would tell you to buy it. And if you thought it sucked, I'd offer to give you your money back.

That's a bold statement. And yes I would put my money where my mouth is on this one. It's a no brainer!!!

I use this meter on two older cameras that do not have build in meters, a Nikon S3 Y2K and a Zorki 1 (Russian copy of a Leica 3).

It is accurate and I've tested it with a Sekonic L-308S Flashmate, and the TTL meter in a Voightlander Bessa R4M. You must learn to use it properly (keep the camera aimed at the subject area as you meter..obvious..or else you'll be metering something other than what yu will be shooting).

It is amazingly small and light, but MUCH handier than a hand held meter.

Well constructed, easy to use and accurate.

I use this meter on a Fuji GW690 medium format rangefinder. It fits snugly in the hot shoe without difficulty and stays there, feels robust and well-made. Very pleased - does exactly what a reflective shoe meter should.

Comments about VC Speed Meter II (Black):

The meter works well, but the battery door does not. It takes very strong fingernails or a edge tool like a screwdriver blade to try and pop it open, and then large thumbs and a powerful grip to snap it closed - all the while wondering if one is ruining the door or will have to use masking tape to hold it closed. The little arrow on the door is unhelpful, since to close the door one must shove very hard in the opposite directing to make it snap closed. Some more thought should go into this design.

Comments about VC Speed Meter II (Black):

                    This is absolutely fantastic.

Nicely built metal shell and dials with a dampened rotation on the aperture and click stops on the speed dial.
The bottom is plastic and the battery door has the potential to open, so a small piece of gaffer will prevent that.
When you take a reading and afterwards change the settings, the meter will recalculate for the new settings.
Battery life is not an issue as Ive had mine since they came out and as yet havent needed to replace them.
I use this meter with many cameras, 6x17, 6x9 and fixed lens RF cameras amongst others.
Meter readings are the same as doing multiple spots with my Sekonic L758dr. Id say that was high praise..

Comments about VC Speed Meter II (Black):

Many years ago I've put my first 35mm cameras away in a shelf when I became aware of the advantages of automation like found in the Olympus OM-2through-the lens metering.
Now I've found a very precise gadget that takes the guesswork out in the use of old cameras without lightmeters or with early generation electronics.
The VC Speed Meter II very easy use in shutter or aperture priority modes brings back the fun in the use of mechanical marvels of the past as a Contax I and Leica IIIf I own that really didn't deserve be just gathering dust.

For the price, I would expect a battery compartment door that wouldn't pop open so easily (with the batteries falling right out, they're not held in place by anything!). Just dropping the unit a couple inches into a well-cushioned bag pops the cover off, and there I am, hunting for the batteries. And you need to be very careful not to accidentally push the door open when you put the meter in the hot-shoe or take it off. At this price I shouldn't have to gaffer tape the thing just to keep the batteries in.

Well built, easy to use, this light meter is a great add on for my Yashika 44, Mamiya 645J, and Linhof Technika IV. All of them have become much easier (and thus more fun) to use because the light meter (on the hot/accessory shoe) feels so integrated to the camera. A warning to those, like me, with diverse cameras: hot/accessory shoes are not actually identical sizes and the VC Speed Meter II might need a little creative attaching to make it secure on the shoes of some cameras.
The only con is that the battery door opens too easily.

Durable and troublefree and well made. I do wish a strap-case or pouch were offered for transport/storage and for use with vintage cameras without flash shoes.

Comments about VC Speed Meter II (Silver):

                          Very convenient for meterless Leica

Comments about VC Speed Meter II (Black):

Problems Encountered: Accidentally changed the ISO dial while carrying the camera on my shoulder. Now I double check it before I shoot. Would prefer to the shutter dial to also have click stops. I would also like to see the mount on the meter to have some screw-down mechanism like some flashes do.
