I use this for a general purpose standard focal length walk around on my Sony A7 full frame w/ a converter. Images are sharp, the focusing nub is smooth but it is taking some getting use to not having a standard focus ring.

I am not experiencing any issues on the A7 but I do need a helicoid adapter so I can take closer shots. Currently the MFD is quite far. That'll be fixed soon as the helicoid arrives.

I work off of the A7s, and for all intents and purposes this lens gets the job done and done well. I gave it three stars because frankly there are some limitations that are tough to get around. The focus ring is a bit stiff, but it's not too tough to get used to (I use it for video as well and it's just a matter of practice). The focusing ring is pretty sensitive too so Finding focus can be hard to figure out at first. The minimum focus distance is the worst part of this lens. You have to be about a meter (roughly 3 feet) or more from your subject which makes this lens fairly annoying when working with tight spaces. Aside from those complaints, the quality of this lens is spectacular and it's able to move at half stops so you can actually get 1.8 and 2.4 which is really useful when depth of field is important (again I shoot video). At the end of the day I wouldn't recommend the lens because you could just pick up a vintage On my way! Series lens for around $ and have a more versatile lens.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 M-Mount Lens:

I have a whole bunch of lenses - many Leica - and this is my go to. When I bought it, the focus was very stiff. It will gradually loosen with use and become buttery. The size is wonderfully small. And the draw is classic - similar to my pre-asph summilux, but with less distortion and more contrast. I have filed the flange to make it bring up the 35 lines in my Leicas. It's easy. Use a metal fingernail file. The Nokton is dreamy wide open and razor sharp at f/4. Great street lens. I think it might be the best bang-for-the-buck lens out there.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 M-Mount Lens:

Used this on my A72, XE2 and XT1. Sharpness is ok, handling is great! The form factor though cannot be beat. For a f1.4 lens, it sure is small but dense and hefty for its size. Build quality is excellent and the aperture and focus rings are smooth.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 M-Mount Lens:

Being someone just getting into more advanced photography I was very impressed at the quality just out of the box testing in my living room. If you can handle the manual settings you will be very happy with the retro look and excellent picture quality. Not to mention the fact that it is half the price of equivalent automatic lenses.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 M-Mount Lens:

This lens is extremely small and well built. Optically, it is really nice stopped down to f/2 or smaller, but even at f/1.4 it isn't bad. The optics are really impressive given that this lens is designed for analog M-mount cameras and I am using it on 36mp Sony E-mount body with a cheap adaptor. The way this lens renders can be thought of as "classic" or "vintage," because it has a nice circular blurring effect at wider apertures and a very please vignetting falloff. The only issue I have with it is that the focus on mine is pretty stiff. I read on some different forums that it loosens up after some use, but, presently, mine is annoyingly stiff.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 M-Mount Lens:

I've always loved the look a 40mm prime gives you, and this Voigtlander is one of the few options a modern photographer has.

Long story short: it's good. Not great, but good.

The good: It's well-built, inexpensive, fast, and small. Good size for a rangefinder or mirrorless camera. It's also reasonably sharp wide open and sharp stopped down.

The downsides: Rather intense vignetting and average to poor bokeh depending on the environment. Also, this lens requires a lens hood to control flare and one is NOT included.

The construction alone makes this lens feel likes its worth every penny. Bokeh is a bit harsh... but renders well. Its a tad soft wide open, especially near the borders on an FF sensor... but the images render so well that the softness comes off as more of a wanted effect then a nuisance. This lens has character.

Compared to some of the pricey lenses out there with the naked untrained eye I really can't see that much of a difference in Photo quality, nor a justification in some of the prices however, I am not a professional photographer and is just my opinion. I am super pleased with this little tank of a lens and would recommend it to a friend.

The lens quality is great. It works amazing for every kind of light, but especially in interiors and low lights. Although it is difficult to focus in low light because you can not see so much the imaging merging so you can focus, but if you make it the picture results perfect. There nothing else i can say about this lens.

I use this mounted on my Sony NEX-7 and is gives me the equivalent of a 60mm lens on it. This has excellent bokah and is a natural choice for low light photography. It is a good focal length for general walk around photography, as well as non-macro close ups. Great optical quality, even wide open.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 M-Mount Lens:

Optically and mechanically fine. On the Nex-5, with adapter, allows precise setting of aperture, depth of field, focus, etc. Almost a poor man's Leica M-8.2.. Highly recommended, but understand that, in typical the engineering way, for 20% of the price, you will receive 80% of the functionality of a high end Leica lens.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 M-Mount Lens:

I put the performance of Canon and Nikon's consumer level primes slightly above the Voigtlander. It's not bad, but it's no Canon "L" prime or Leica. Flare is hard to control, bokeh is pretty ugly wide open and there's lots of blooming off OOF highlights, especially skin tones.
For the price, and given our limited choices for M mounts, this is still a fair choice as long as you don't have too high of expectations.
It triggers 50mm framelines so you will need to file the mount to trigger the (far more accurate)35mm framelines.
I don't recommend it for Pro's as I use an M8 along with my Canon pro equipment and the look from this lens doesn't blend well with the look I get from my "L" lenses or M8 and old Summicrom.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 M-Mount Lens:

I should preface my comments by saying that I'm using this with an adapter on a Micro 4/3rd body (GF1).I'm very happy with the lens. I use it for low light photography and candid portrait shots, as well as some landscape photography. The lens is pretty soft wide open, which isn't necessarily a con as some portrait shots are better served by a softer touch, and even stopping down to f/2 makes a noticeable difference. By f/4 or f/5.6 it's more than sharp enough through most of the frame, though corners tend to remain a tad soft. Stop to f/8 and you're fully sharp. The bokeh works for me, but that's a pretty subjective measure. The main shortcoming of the lens lies in purple fringing, which can be quite pronounced wide open but tends to abate as the lens is stopped down. The only other image quality downside is some slight vignetting at the corners. In most shots, the vignetting isn't even noticeable, and I only really discovered it by shooting a white surface and increasing contrast in an image editor.Lastly, the rear element has a small speck at the edge of the glass that won't be removed with normal cleaning (like a tiny fleck of black paint or something). I almost returned the lens for this reason. However, it doesn't seem to affect image quality. It's likely cropped out by the m4/3 sensor size (which turns a 40mm into an 80mm). Although this could affect the lens' resale value, I kept it. Why? Because it's a fun lens and on my first day of ownership I shot two great candid portraits of my wife and kid in some tricky lighting. That's pretty much what I was looking for.

I've used this lens on a Panasonic Lumix G1 with an adapter and a Leica M8. The performance has been stellar, especially for the price.

Slight vignette on fastest f-stop, but that's pretty standard. Highly recommended.

The build quality on this lens is amazing, none of the current plastic auto focus lenses come close. Both aperture and focus rings are perfectly weighted and work flawlessly. I use this with an adapter on my Panasonic G1 and the large 1.4 aperture allows me to take low light pictures. It is also very compact and light. Obviously you need to focus manually and zoom with your feet!
