Product Highlights
  • Lateral Side Arm with Ball Head
  • 38" Long Telescoping Arm

The Photek TRI-X-2500 Tripod Extender adds a horizontal lateral arm to any standard tripod that has a 1/4"-20 or 3/8" mounting stud. It features a ball head with a quick-release plate. The Extender has a telescopic design and an overall length of 38", and shipping weight is 3.5 lb. For added stability it has a built-in counter weight inside the arm.

Lateral arms enable cameras to be positioned above or below the tripod in a 90° position, which might otherwise be obstructed by the tripod legs.

A quick-release plate (model TRI-X-2500-P) on the supplied ball head makes it convenient for mounting digital, 35mm, or medium format cameras.

I really like the Phototek extender. I have several tripods (Manfrotto, Vanguard) that allow you to reorient the center column to be horizontal, but none of them allow you to have such a long reach as the Phototek.

Plus, when you use the center column of a tripod this way, you lose the standard use of the center column - to adjust the height (unless you adjust the legs, of course). This is not a trivial concern when shooting straight down. In my case, I sometimes want to shoot large objects like a newspaper fully-opened. So I need to get up pretty high, especially when using a macro lens instead of a wide-angle one. Using the Phototek allows me to get out pretty far and also up pretty high using the center column in the normal way.

The counter-weight that is built into the Phototek is very helpful. I noticed right away that it seemed less "tippy" than when I have used the regular center column horizonally in the past.

The ballhead you get with it is pretty nice. It has only one control to tighten and loosen everything (the ball and the turn mechanism at the bottom), but it loosens gradually with some tension, unlike some inexpensive heads that are all or nothing. The pan mechanism was VERY rough on mine. I put a few drops of oil onto it and it got a lot better, although it's still kind of rough.

As someone else mentioned, the quick-release is just like a Manfrotto quick release, so you can use your old plates.

You can mount the Phototek either at the top of the center column like a head, or even mount it on top of a head, which would give you tilt and rotate control over the entire extender arm.

I tried it with my Canon 60D plus a pretty heavy Sigma 17-70 lens and was able to move the arm very far out from my Manfrotto aluminum tripod without it threatening to tip over, with only about 12 inches or even less of the Phototek on the counter-weight side. I could have easily extended it the entire way (with nothing on the counter-weight side) had I used some kind of weight on the tripod legs or with a bag in the center.

The Phototek is very handy and at an excellent price for such a nicely-finished product.

just got it recently, and it seems fine. I like the counterweight, although it could be heavier, because you can extend your camera quite far out with the extending arm, and if you're not careful, your tripod could tip over from the weight of your camera. Anyway, it's easily remedied with an improvised counter-weight.
One flaw I've noticed is the part to which you attach the ball-head is a bit loose, and haven't figured out how to fix that yet. hasn't affected shooting yet, but maybe in the future..

After using this product a few times only I noticed that it is hard to slide the extender in and out. Apparently, the tightening ring deforms the rod, even when using very little force.

Comments about Photek TRI-X-2500 Tripod Extender:

I wanted this arm to fit on a "vintage" tripod I inherited from my Dad and it works great. It fit snugly and with confidence and it's extra length meant I could not only move the camera away from the center line of the tripod but also that I could reach up. The included ball head works wonderfully and I'm now able to get shots that I could not get before.

Comments about Photek TRI-X-2500 Tripod Extender:

I bought the tripod extender to get ability taking nadir picture during shooting 360x180 panoramas. It works as expected. I like counter weight inside the arm that allows keeping stability of the whole assembly with my camera on it, even thought the arm as a result getting heavy. What I really do not like is very long locking screw. Due to this ridiculously long screw it create dent on the arm surface. I did not pay attention to the notification about this in the manual. But if manufacturer knows about this it should be notified with sticker attached to the arm. It is common sense isn't it. And in addition the notification is not correct also: it is about precaution to prevent from over tightening but how you can feel it is over or not without wrench with torque limit.
So after I found a few dents on the arm surface I cut the screw making it shorter but still long enough to get reliable locking without leaving dents on the arm surface.
This is the only reason I gave the extender 3 stars.

Great quality, heavy duty product. Works great, but you need to make sure you have a nice sturdy tripod to use it with. It's heavy, so you have to make sure you level it with your tripod so your camera doesn't end up toppling over from the weight. Above all this is really a good extender. I wished it were less heavy though for easier handling.

Very well made, including the ball head. The only reasonably priced way I could find to extend more than 22" off center. You will need a weight bag on your tripod as a counter balance when fully extended. You will also probably want a better bag for it, as the one it comes with is not padded.

Well constructed. Versatile (can mount on any tripod). If additional counter-wight is needed...heh...just add a counterweight!

This item integrates perfectly with my Giottos centre column tripod for overhead photography projects where the centre column is just not quite long enough. It is reasonably heavy but this reflects the quality of it. Has a great solid ball head with camera plate. Cannot fault it. Balked at the shipping and customs to import to UK though as this was more than the unit itself!! Nobody's fault but my own government...

This is a very sturdily built piece of equpiment. The ball joint is perfectly sized to hold even a heavy camera with out slipping.

Comments about Photek TRI-X-2500 Tripod Extender:

I use Canon EOS 7D (which weighs a bit less than 1kg, ~2.2lb).
I used my camera with this lateral arm and seems it is stable, but of course you have to be careful on how to balance the arm with the tripod.

The arm comes with a ball head already, but it can be detached and another head would fit it. To me, it is sort of a deal. It's like having a new head to use with other tripods now.

The ring that holds the arm can be removed so you would screw it on the tripod easily and then fit in the arm. The arm itself has a knob in the middle to control the length of the arm and it holds firmly. Maximum length is about one meter (~3ft), more or less.

The weight of the arm is a bit unexpected, but it is reasonable. When collapsed and fit into its case, the arm is a bit longer than a real human arm, might even fit into a tripod's case altogether if feasible.

I am currently using the side arm at work with very lightweight video cameras that are aimed down at a target, and in that role it works very well. I have not yet used it with my heavier SLR gear. The one thing I think this product lacks is a hook to add counterweight if necessary.

Great piece of gear for the price. Just make sure that you use with with a quality tripod-the lateral arm has substantial weight to it and any weaknesses in the tripod will be accentuated.
