I'm a studio engineer/producer/musician. I've had my MDR-V6 phones for over 20 years, and they still sound terrific. There are only two downsides (and these are both well-known shortcomings):

    • The 1/8" to 1/4" plug adapter breaks too easily…usually after a few years if you use it often. Just get yourself a good plug adapter and that takes care of it. (The built-in 1/8" stereo mini-plug is rock-solid with good strain relief.)

    • The ear pad covering eventually breaks down and the pads need to be replaced (mine lasted 15 years). But the pads are available online for about $5, and it takes just a few minutes to remove the old ones and install the new ones. (No tools or special skills required.) Even so, 15 years of steady service for earpads is pretty darned good…and the phones themselves are still going strong.

Now, let me explain to you why these phones have been the choice of many studio mix engineers for the past couple of decades. It's NOT because they have perfectly flat response (they don't, but except for a 5 dB dip at about 5kHz and a 5 db bump at about 9kHz, they're pretty close), or because they have great ambient noise rejection (they don't), or because they're super comfortable (they're much better than average, but there are more comfortable phones). Rather, the reason these phones are so valuable in the studio is because you can hear things on them that you can't hear on other phones. I don't mix on them, but I CHECK my mixes on them, and without exception, they reveal things that I otherwise wouldn't hear...even on my state of the art tri-amped Genelec studio monitors.

The imaging is excellent -- very clear and tight (not time-smeared or "smushed"). That's especially true in the bass and mid-bass range, where so many other headphones fail. I don't want "killer" bass; I want ACCURATE bass. Sony probably could have tweaked the ample 40 mm drivers to deliver more bass, but I'm grateful they chose to stick with accuracy. The bass response is smooth, ultra-realistic, and super clean.

I have no idea how these phones compare to what an "audiophile" would want. I only know that the music audiophiles listen to (if it's well mixed), was probably checked on a pair of MDR-V6 (or MDR-7506) phones. (They're essentially the same.) Now you know the "secret"...the reason why these phones are legendary, and deservedly so. In fact, I've become so accustomed to the vivid clarity of the MDR-V6 phones that I use them for everything...even everyday listening. They're simply superb phones for that purpose --- better than any other phones I've ever used.

If you want phones that do something different --- like explosive bass response or other coloration --- then these aren't for you. But if you want a set of super-durable phones that will reveal musical detail in a way that most other phones can't --- especially at such a remarkably reasonable price --- you'll be hard pressed to find another set of phones (except MDR-7506) that even comes close.

Used in standard editing atmosphere and the occasional on-location or studio shoot, these headphones provide excellent balanced audio. However, like many (if not all) Sony headphones, the build quality is second-rate; the ear pads are poorly made. The inner seam separates exposing the foam, the outer edge wears out, and generally loosens over time causing it to slip and come off the headset. Plastic hinge holders easily snap or break from stress over time.

I use these on my big laptop. I tell you takes much less power than my old cheaper Sony's I had. It plays very loud even at half volume. With software equalizer on most laptops you can get the perfect sound you want.

Comments about Sony MDR-V6 Closed Back Stereo Studio Headphones:

To keep this simple, these are the headphones to monitor your mix. They do not color your sound. And you will hear every thing there. They are natural. Sony is the one doing this right.

Now for construction. I like the build quality. There is plastic where it doesn't matter, but good material where there should be. This helps with comfort because it affects weight, and price point as well. Just take care of them. The cable has a nice weight to it, letting you know it isn't cheap. The ear cushions are great. The headphones come with a cool little pouch to store them in. Even the box they came in was nice. They were sitting in a red velvety cloth, which I was not expecting. I can't find anything bad about these headphones. And anyone who has owned a pair of Sony's will tell you of their reliability. You can't go wrong with them. Best headphone purchase ever made. They simply make me smile. Thanks for reading.

Do what you say, when you say, for the price you say. Good business practices. Sony accomplished this with the MDR-V6 headphones. Outstanding sound quality, comfortable, durable, reliable, economical - who could ask for more. They still receive outstanding reviews and are still in use, both by professionals and novices alike - since the mid '80s.

I bought these headphones to use for monitoring audio for video in the field, as well as to monitor audio while editing in Adobe Premiere. The sound quality of these headphones is top notch. As far as I can tell, these have a very neutral frequency response that is ideal when editing and applying effects in post. I am also pretty impressed with how comfortable the headphones are. It takes several hours before my left ear (and only my left ear) starts to ache

Comments about Sony MDR-V6 Closed Back Stereo Studio Headphones:

I use these for video sound design and music production. For a cheap set of studio monitor headphones, they perform really well. They are comfortable to wear for long periods of time, even though they don't breathe well. You'll find that they help you regulate work breaks to cool off your ears. Not a detraction from how well they do in professional work setting at all.

The sound reproduction is nice and level, with only a little dip in the bottom end.

The build materials are a little on the cheaper side. I would not recommend these for a nightclub dj, or for traveling around as I don't think they would hold up well on the road. As for your personal set at a workstation, perfect. There is absolutely no plasticy creaking when moving around.
I would keep these around and replace them with an identical pair if they ever broke.

Money very well spent here. You would have to spend double to get a notably better headphone.

These are to listen too MP3's on walks. Sony has built this great headset for many years. A better headset is the Grado S80..I have both. Grado wins slightly...

I purchased for these for $ on Guam when they first came out in 1985. I work in broadcasting and program production and for the price have never heard headphones that were any better. Just replaced the earpads. They are keepers.

These closed over-ear headphones are fantastic. Second pair I've owned in the last few years. They are very well built and the price makes it the best option IMO.

                                        Go get a pair!

I used Sony MDR-V6 headphones for 10+ years as a radio personality. When I launched my podcast, I knew I wanted some great headphones. I tried just about everything I could get my ears on and came right back to the MDR-V6's. Clean, solid, sound and always comfortable.

Use these at church to monitor out of sanctuary feed. Good isolation and fairly flat response. I like the small package they fold into. I have used these for over twenty years. The ear pads last about five years.
