Overview
  • 1Description

The E2 Headrush Tape Echo/Delay and Phrase Sampler Pedal from Akai Professional is a versatile stomp box that simulates a 4-head analog tape echo machine and includes both a normal delay effect and loop recording capabilities. Plug your guitar, bass, vocal, or mono synth into the E2's 1/4" input, and prepare to be awash in repeated signals.

Operational modes include a Normal Delay Mode, a Tape Echo Mode, and a Looping Recorder Mode that lets you play and record a phrase and immediately loop playback so you can overdub. Delay options include real time feedback and gain adjustment as well as echo rate, high frequency damping, and other controls. In Tape Echo Mode up to four virtual tape head returns use their own outputs, which you can send to separate amps or mixer channels. Alternately, the four outputs can be selectively routed to and combined at the Mix output. In Normal Delay Mode, the effected (wet only) signal can also be received via the Head 1 output.

The E2 improves upon its predecessor, the E1 by using two heavy-duty footswitches and offering foot switch mode selection as well as tempo tap.

The Headrush requires a 9V power supply such as the recommended P9-III AC Adaptor (not included).

16-bit Digital Delay
Set the delay time anywhere between 0.5 ms and 23.8 seconds using the Normal Delay (default sample rate is 44.1 kHz). You can even achieve a generous 35.0 seconds of delay in Extend Mode (using a 29.4 kHz sample rate), to simulate cavernous echoes.
Three Delay Effects in One
The Headrush includes a vintage Tape Echo effect, a Normal Delay, and a Looping mode. Turning the HF Damp knob in Tape Echo Mode dials in a muffled sound to simulate the classic analog sound.
Looping Recorder with Overdub
The looping recorder function with unlimited overdubs allows elaborate solo performances. Play and record a phrase and immediately loop the playback so you can overdub. Normal loops last up to 23.8 seconds (overdubs last 11.9 seconds), though in lo-fi Extend mode these ranges stretch out to 35.6 and 17.8 seconds respectively. Overdubbed phrases are layered over original phrases for a lush wall of sound.
Designed for Live Performance
Most critical functions are available using two sturdy foot switches. Pressing both simultaneously lets you switch between Tape Echo, Normal Delay, and Looping Rec mode. Stomping the right switch twice on beat lets you set the delay tempo without putting down your instrument. In Looping Rec Mode, this same switch turns overdubbing on or off. Use the left switch as an effect bypass control. The LED display indicates which effect is in use and a flashing Tempo indicator lets you know the current speed of the delay or loop.
Full Control
Sculpt the echo you want by adjusting the volume level, amount of high frequency damping, number of repeats (feedback), delay time, the relative gain of the four Head outputs, and the apparent timing differences between the four virtual heads.
Configurable Outputs
In Tape Echo Mode, up to four separate Head delay outputs can be sent to your mixer for custom panning and adjustment or to separate amps for a variety of four-channel effects. Use the Mix output for a combined signal. Each time you connect to one of the four Head output jacks, that signal is removed from the Mix. In Normal Delay Mode, two outputs are used: one for the Mix, and one with wet effects output only.
