Product Highlights
  • For Nikon DX Digital Cameras (except for D5000, D3100, D3000, D5100, D40 & D60 Cameras)

The Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX lens is exclusively designed for use with Digital SLR cameras, and provides a super wide-angle zoom range, ideal for the tightest of interiors, as well as for dramatic landscape photography.

This lens features the exclusive "Focus Clutch Mechanism", a signature of the Tokina PRO series lenses which provides a faster, smoother autofocus operation with a smooth manual focus action not normally found in autofocus lenses.

Two Aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design, to correct for spherical aberrations. It also incorporates internal focusing to prevent deterioration of the optical quality at close distances and to eliminate rotation of the front barrel during focusing.

Note: Equivalent focal length in 35mm terms when used on a digital camera is 18-36mm.

Note! DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with "full-frame" FX digital or 35mm film SLR cameras. AF not supported by D5000, D3100, D3000, D5100, D40 & D60 cameras.

Fast, ultra-wide angle zoom lens with a constant f/4 aperture
Two Aspherical lens elements minimize distortion, especially at the periphery, for superior optical performance
Fast internal focusing with the one-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
Long focus travel for easy, accurate manual focusing
The rounded diaphragm opening (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural

I spent 8 months agonizing about which wide-angle to get, Tokina or Sigma. I read every review and blog I could find. I finally ordered the Tokina from B+H and it was delivered to me in SE Pennsylvania the next day (with standard UPS shipping). Considered waiting for the 11-16 2.8 to come out but the zoom range is to small for a walk-around lens. I might buy that one too for weddings.I haven't had so much fun taking photos since I bought my D-80 + 18-135 kit lens in September 2006. The ability to shoot the same scene from different perspectives gives me the ability to shoot artistically right out of the box. With this lens creativity comes without effort or thought. I look through the viewfinder and can see the whole scene in one glance. I put the camera down and have to turn my head 90% and look twice to take it all inamazing! If I had it to do over I would have gotten this lens before I bought the 70-200 as simple cropping of images from the kit zoom can replicate that focal length but there is no way to get wider in post processing.I process all of my Tokina 12-24 photos (personal use and weddings) through DXO Optics. DXO corrects C.A. (purple fringing) automatically, even in Jpegs. DXO gives the ability to keep the semi-fisheye look for people photos (straight lines at edges are curved but people look fairly normal) or to completely correct distortion for landscapes (people at the edges of the scene get their faces stretched when distortion is corrected but straight lines are straight again). This gives me the option of printing two very different photos from every single image captured.FT Job is Probation/Parole Officer, I will use this lens for interior and location photos of search/seizure details. I was using 17-50 2.8 Tamron but it takes four shots to get an image of the whole room. The Tokina 12-24 4 does it in two. The loss of f-stop is no big deal b/c the Tokina can shoot at slower shutter speeds w/o blurring. It will be much less difficult to explain interior layout to the Judge/Jury now. Also the Tokina focuses close enough at 24mm to record images of seized contraband (guns, drugs, etc.) without cropping (can't do that for evidence photos). Can't use DXO for Forensic applications as all images must be un-altered originals. Picked the Tokina over Sigma because, even though the extra 2mm at the wide end would be nice, the Tokina has less distortion than the Sigma at the wide end and none at the long end (24mm).I bought the Hoya Pro1 digital UV filter. It is slim (no dark corners) and accepts the standard lens cap. I need to buy a split ND filter because there is so much sky in landscape images because it's wide-angle top to bottom as well as side to side. (If I had more to spend I would get a D300 instead as the Active D-lighting eliminates blown out sky in landscapes).Don't waste any more time trying to choose a wide-angle lens. Just get one and start having fun!

Expertise: Forensic Professional, Hobbyist and some weddings.

Problems Encountered: I have read that the lens doesn't extend when zooming (technically true) but the front element does move back and forward below the filter threads when zooming. I would definitely get a UV filter to keep dust from getting in to the lens interior surfaces when zooming. I got dust inside my Tokina and am greatly annoyed.

    Previous Equivalent Item Owned: D80, Nikon 18-135 3.5-5.6 kit lens, Nikon 70-200 2.8, Nikon 50 1.8, Tokina 17-50 2.8

Items I Recommend: Hoya Pro1 UV filter.

[...]. My new Tokina ATX 124 lens is much better but it is still unsharp on the right side of the image when enlarged at 100% in the computer. I have noticed that if I use a very small aperture (f/16 or smaller)the sharpness of this lens improves a lot and makes it a very sharp lens all around but...who shoots only at f/16 all the time !!! So, I may exchange it for the Nikon 12-24 f/4. No wonder the Nikon is twice as expensive...It has to be much better I'm sure. Otherwise, good construction, well built and easy to use. One other thing. F/4 at 12mm underexposes the image about 1/2 a stop when compared to F/4 at 24mm. I am very disappointed.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens:

Sure, there are wider, more exotic and faster super wides for DX. However, Tokina takes the cake with best value for money and excellent optical and consturction values. A ultra wide is a must have, but if you're like me you don't use one all the time and can't justify the extra cost for some ot the other options. In DX it's still a reasonable size and weight. There are plenty of good reviews, so I'll just agree. The only thing I will add is that the AF/MF clutch tends to slide when I pick the lens up to mount or put it away. This is the only non brand lens I will trust.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens:

I really loved this lens and use it extensively for landscape / architecture photography.
        Pros:
        * Excellent alternative to the Nikon (or Canon) 12-24mm wide-angle lens at less than half the price
        * In real-world shooting, it's as sharp (if not sharper) than the Nikon lens (that I rented to try it out)
        * Amazing color rendition and fast autofocus on my D7000
        * Lens looks solid and professional
        * Wide-angle gives an amazing look to buildings / landscapes that draws the viewer in.

        Cons:
        * This model won't autofocus on entry-level DSLRs without an autofocus motor (such as the Nikon D5000), but it works perfectly on mid-range (and above) models (such as Nikon D7000).
        * Is made for cropped sensors (DX on the Nikon), will vignette on Full-frame cameras should you upgrade your camera later.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens:

I reviewed long and hard before buying this lens for my Nikon D7000. I had my heart set on the Tokina 11-16 F/2.8 but after listening to some other users and taking their advice, I chose to give up the 1 mm on the wide side for the extra reach on the long side. I'm glad I did. This lens is a gem. It's sharp. Very sharp. I have not found the maximum aperture of F/4.0 to be a hindrance in any way. The 11-16 is one stop faster but in virtually any review you read, by at least F/5.6 and certainly by F/8.0, the two are in a dead heat for sharpness. The build is excellent, it focuses quickly and frankly, I have no idea what others are talking about when they speak of this lens as being noisy. Good grief. Yes, you can hear it focusing. And?

The range is perfect, the weight solid but not heavy and the size appropriate for its focal length.

The D7000 corrects for chromatic aberration so if the lens was prone to that, I wouldn't know. The distortion is minimal. the slight knock on this version is that it will flare if you intend to include direct sunlight in the photo. I knew that going in. Perhaps the version 'II' is better in that respect, but it is a buck and a half more. Wasn't worth it to me.

Have no reservations whatsoever about this not being a Nikon-brand lens. It's built every bit as well as the Nikon equivalent and perhaps even better.

The focal length is positively addicting. Such a deal for what you get for your money. Easily my favorite lens.

Great for travel photography. Better than a prime lens as you can make small adjustments to bring you nearer/further away for a suitable composition. It is a great lens to complement the usual "Kits" lenses for the wider angle shots.

Decent wideangle zoom lens for a good price.... could be faster, AF mode switch is unusual but works....feels cheap though. Heavy lens, so not particularly good for nature photography / hiking. The small zoom range is not a problem for me and I actually found it helpful for composing shots quickly, myself having a large background in prime lens.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens:

I loved the first shots that I took with this lens. The pictures are sharp and the colors are rich. Very solid build, switch between AF/M focus is easy, zoom range is perfect. The lens price is very good, and reading the other reviews confirmed my purchase.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens:

Corner to corner sharpness is excellent. Minor improvement noticed from 6.3-8 (as is the case for most lenses). The build quality is outstanding. Very heavy, easy to mount, and rings run smooth. The AF/MF mechanism doesn't feel up to par with the build quality of the rest of the lens, but still feels okay. Autofccus is loud and it hunts in low light. I am happy with this lens and look forward to using it for many years to come.

                  How: great for daily landscapes!
Very nice angles for Nikon D cameras, even with the cropo the lenses give you wonderfull shots. Not very nice with autofocus speed.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX Lens:

Did an enormous amount of research on this lens v competition. It certainly backs up what I have read.
I was concerned 12mm would not be wide enough but on a DX it works out great.
                  Positives:
Sharp images across the frame, at F8 it is fantastic
Solid build with silky smooth zoom
Plenty of light even though F4
                  Excellent color rendition
                  Good resistance to flare
Don't see any evidence of ca but my camera may be removing it

I just received this lens and in 3 days I am blown away by how sharp and clear every image has been. I bought this lens for my D7000 and have also used it on my D80 and they both work great! My landscapes make everyone run with envy! Don't buy this lens because of the price buy it because you want a really great piece of glass. 10 STARS!!!

I just bought this lens about a month ago, and have been shooting in a city aspect with this lens. And the results were better than I thought. It's a little heavy but u will have that with good glass. The wide angle ranger is perfect for capturing a whole lot in one shot. Ending thought I'm not a professional by any means but I would rate this lens a solid 9 out of 10 for me. Does what I want and more.
