Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This Impact 43" White Translucent Umbrella is suggested for use in mid-length portraits for one or two persons.
| Open Diameter | 43" (109 cm) |
| Closed Length | 28.3" (71.8 cm) |

Can't go wrong
You can't go wrong with this shoot through umbrella. I am a portrait photographer and needed an umbrella that would give me a nice soft light that maintained true skin tone.

43" - big enough to light a whole body. Great soft light at short distances from model. Push back for a more contrast look.
Durable for the price. Secure snap to open and close.
Every portrait photographer should have one of these umbrellas.

pretty cheap...you get what you pay for
When I got this out of the box and opened it, one of the caps came off! I had to SEW the cap back on. Feels and act pretty cheap.

on the other hand, it does what it is supposed to be. I would have rather spend a little more money getting some other umbrellas...

Comments about Impact White Translucent Umbrella (43"):
I haven't used the umbrellas yet. I have taken the (3) I purchased out and inspected them and they all seem fine. I mean, they're an umbrella, right.
I mention the customer service because when I received the initial order of (3) umbrellas one of them had a bent shaft. B&H's RMA process online wasn't cooperating with me so I contacted them through email. I was contacted the next morning by customer service and they shipped out a new umbrella immediately. They didn't make me ship the damaged one back and just told me to discard it from here. Gotta give 'em credit for making their commitment right. Way to go B&H.

As a commercial photographer, multiple umbrellas are important, especially for location work. I tested this umbrella before having to go out on location tomorrow. It's fabric is very light weight, so as with all equipment one must take care. We will see how it holds up.

This umbrella is just huge compared to my 30" model - the extra 13" really make a big difference. I've used it a couple of times so far and like it - good light output, seems sturdy enough (for an inexpensive unit). It'll be a regular piece of gear in my lighting kit from now on.

Well built and reliable. Very inexpensive too. There was a small stain on mine when I got it, but a little bleach and it was perfectly white again.

I use this for my lights. It seems sturdy enough and I have enough height on it. It doesn't seem like it will last forever though. The bars are pretty thin, but it holds up the light without fear of tipping.
