This is a 43" umbrella with a beaded silver reflective surface. It will intensify and slightly soften the light output of a strobe or constant light fixture.
Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

I just bought it to increase my background light.
I use to light the background with 4 40" white umbrellas, on 4 500W Hensel flash heads, but as I moved to Medium Format system it demands more power to maintain the same DOF in ISO 50.
So as a solution, I've tested all my umbrellas on the background to see if anyone would give me more power with the same white soft effect... and this Impact Umbrella does that, great deal. With the change I can increase my background light in 1 stop, so it's much cheaper than changing all my 4 heads...

The umbrella portion and silver reflector portion of this umbrella would earn it a five star ranking. Both seam heavy-duty and well constructed. The downside is the center post which is very light weight and already bent from a weekend of use. Simply attaching this to the light stand and finger tightening the screw to secure the umbrella in place caused the post to dent. I haven't had that with any of my other umbrellas. That being said, I'm very happy with the cost, size and quality of light distribution for this umbrella.

You get out as much light as you put in or so it seems Surely more than with a white reflective surface and it is as you'd expect a sharper reflection. It's not for soft lighting but rather when you need the most light that you can reflect.

Cheap and sturdy but it doesn't have a translucent option. Silver only.

I've read reviews on this umbrella and other Impact umbrellas and some said it broke very easily, or right when they took it out of the package. I take very good care of my equipment, and if you take care of this umbrella, it will not brake.
I think this umbrella is great.

I only used this umbrella for a couple of sessions. It was great while it lasted but it didnt take long for it to break.

Heavy material, nicely opaque, little light leakage through its black back. Good reflectivity. The thick material makes it seem a bit heavy for the small diameter shaft.
