Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series Autofocus Lens:

      Pros:
Sharp, even wide open. Nice color / contrast. Fast auto focus. Quick shift focusing is a nice feature. Even sharpness across the frame. 9 aperture blades and rounded bokeh balls are a plus. Very compact and light weight and yet is nicely built metal. Like the metal lens hood that is included.

      Cons:
40mm (~60mm equivalent) on APS-C not the most useful focal length.
Close focus distance is a bit further than i'd like.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series Autofocus Lens:

I wasn't expecting much more than a compact lens, but this Limited lens produces great color, resolution, and across-the-frame clarity. And it is tiny--with a built-in lens cover. The cover protects the lens, though I have yet to notice the results of no UV filter. I had purchased the highly-rated 35 Limited lens not long ago--this lens rivals that one minus the macro capability. For stealth shooting (street photography) or just a lens that suddenly makes your camera bag bigger, this lens is a must-have for any Pentax shooter.

The lens has a very solid build and very smooth focus.

I bought this as a handy prime lens for portrait and lower light situations. The lens is well constructed and the 2.8 Aperture is better than the stock lens capability. The camera also has a hood/lens cap combination that adds to its fun factor. The small size makes it a nice companion to the zoom lens in my bag.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series Autofocus Lens:

The first thing I noticed and appreciated about the lens was its (relatively) miniature size. It makes the K-5 almost a "pocketable" camera. However, once I began to use the lens I realized what a winner the optics made it. Great color, great sharpness corner to corner and OK bokeh.

The size and clarity of the lens make it a great street performer. It makes the K-5 unobtrusive yet exquisitely capable. Recently I've been taking with me on walks in the woods, replacing my Tamron 17-50. For whatever reason, I find myself taking far more walks, and taking both more and better pictures, with the DA 40mm. It opens up far more opportunities for photo taking.

I am not a great photographer; in fact, I barely label myself an intermediate. However, I know a good tool when I find one and the DA 40mm is a great tool. Because of its size, it makes the world more available; because of its clarity and its sharpness, it makes the photographic art more obtainable.

I cannot recommend the DA 40mm more highly.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series Autofocus Lens:

For over 20 years I used a Pentax MX with 4 prime M-series lenses: a 28mm f/2.8, a 50mm f/1.7, a 100mm f/4 macro and a 135mm f/3.5. They were all compact, shared a common filter size and were built to last a lifetime. They were from an era when Pentax only built high quality all metal lenses. Of these, the 28mm and 50mm were most often used, the former for its wide angle view and incredible depth of field (DOF) in 35mm mode, the latter for its speed, remarkable sharpness and contrast.

When I bought my first DSLR in 2005 (an istDs) it came with the ubiquitous 18-55mm kit lens. I took plenty of pictures with it but often found myself reverting back to my old standbys for better results. For me, using those manual focus lenses on the istDs was no more demanding than when I was using them with the MX. Set the camera on Manual, make sure you have set the camera to allow use of the aperture ring and manual focus, press the shutter release halfway, hit the AE lock button to set the matching shutter speed and you are off to the races.

A few months ago I purchased a new K5 and found I could still use my old M-series lenses with it. Same modus operandi as with the istDs except you press the green button rather the AE lock to set appropriate shutter speed. Plus, you do not even have to switch focus mode; the camera is smart enough to figure out this is a manual focus lens (but not its focal length). However, I quickly realized that I could only use a fraction of the K5's features and potential with those lenses.

I therefore started looking for a DA prime lens that would complement my old 28 and 50 mm lenses. In doing so, I considered the 35mm f2.4, the 40mm f/2.8 and the 43mm f/1.9. The 35mm would have been ideal were it not for the fact that it is all plastic and has absolutely no distance or DOF scales on it. The 43mm has all of the above but it is quite expensive and I was afraid that, if I bought it, I would never use my 50mm lens again. I had read a lot of favourable reviews on the 40mm, it fell about midway in focal length between my old lenses and the price was very reasonable for a Limited lens with dedicated hood and leather pouch. That is why I finally settled on the 40mm lens, leaving the door open for the addition of a 15 or 21mm lens later on.

I must admit it looks a bit like an ugly duckling mounted on a DSLR. But, with the lens hood attached and a 30.5mm filter mounted backwards, it reminds me of older Zeiss Ikon fixed lens SLRs. It has no aperture ring which can be forgiven on a pancake lens but a DOF scale where the "Pentax 40" badge resides would have been appreciated. At least, it has a distance scale. A sign of my advancing age I suppose but I like to see all three of those features on any lens destined for serious use. The lens hood and cap arrangement has been criticized by some but I find it particularly ingenious and, with a bit of care, it should pose no problem. AF is particularly quick and accurate with the K5.

I took a series of pictures to see how well it compares with my other standbys. It is sharper than the 28mm but I am not sure it will de-throne the 50mm f/1.7 as the best lens in my arsenal particularly when used for portraiture. However, it is definitely in the same ballpark. Some may deplore the f/2.8 maximum aperture but it is less than ½ f-stop slower than the 35mm f/2.4. It is still faster than most zooms. Various reviews indicate pictures are sharp from f/2.8 on with max. resolution reached at f/5.6; the 50mm lens is softer wide open and must be stepped down to f/8 to achieve peak resolution; I would agree with those findings. So the faster lens may not always hold such a great advantage over the slower one.

Last but not least, mounted on a DSLR, it makes for a very compact combo. Walking around with camera and lens can be done with the greatest of ease and without worrying about a protruding lens hitting anything. No it is not pocketable but it will occupy roughly the same space in a camera gadget bag as a flash unit or mid-size zoom lens. It is therefore an emminently portable combo by itself or as a backup when going on vacation or the like.

The resolution is very good to excellent instead of apperture, the chromatic aberration is a non-issue with this len, a very good surprise.

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series Autofocus Lens:

I do most of my photography outdoors and with a tripod, so for me this lens is plenty fast and so far I have had no performance issues. I love the small size of the "limited Series" lenses, it makes them very easy to handle - changing lenses in the field is never a problem, even if your standing in a river. I am definitely going to get more of these "limited Series" lenses in the future, I now have the 40mm and the 15mm, so with adding the 21 and 70 I will have a great package for outdoor photography. For wilderness trips and backpacking they make a nice compact and lightweight package.
Oh yeah, they make great pictures as well!

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series Autofocus Lens:

Used with my Pentax K-5 DSLR, this is a fantastic travel lens due to it's unbelievably small size. Nice bokeh and sharp wide open, it works well for portraits and as a general purpose walking around lens. As a set, the 21mm Limited and this 40mm Limited together provide what I need when travelling.

The only thing that is not great is the strange combination lens cover/shade - you have to unscrew a small cap which takes a few seconds, not great when in a hurry. This is the only reason I am not giving this lens a 5 star rating.

                        Highly recommended.

I use this lens with my K5. It makes my camera very compact, ideal for street photography. But it's very versatile and can be used for almost anything (with some compromises...)

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series Autofocus Lens:

When a minimum of camera gear is required and used with a K-r you cannot get much more compact than this in the DSLR world. The lens body is very nicely crafted out of all alloy metal components in Pentax's Vietnam factory - and don't be put off by the country of manufacture, it is top notch in every way.

The lens bag supplied is Japanese made leather with a neat drawstring and also very classy.

I won't go into specific performance information as it has all been described before by other reviewers other than to confirm that it works a treat with both my K-r & K-5. AF is fast, accurate and not very noisy - the screw drive will probably last a very long time.

If you don't like the lens cap supplied, plastic 49mm ones are readily available and cheap. My preference is always to attach a UV filter to a quality lens anyway, so this in combo with a plastic cap means its well protected and only adds a little extra length.

Things not to like - none that I can think of

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series Autofocus Lens:

I purchased in one time the three pentax pancakes, and, the principal thing that motivated me for get the pancakes, is this lens.

That will quickly become my main normal lens, the size, the construction, the look of the lens is amazing! Of course, the quality, colors, sharpness of the pictures taken with the pancake lens.

If I have to say one cons, its about the lens cap. I like it, and I know the way it works before the buy of the lens, but I think that for the price you pay for the limiteds, it would be nice if all of them come with a normal cap, when you intend to not use the hood.

                              Sorry my poor english

Comments about Pentax SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Series Autofocus Lens:

First and foremost, this is the coolest and tiniest lens you will ever use. It is beautifully built and incredibly solid. This impression is amplified by the solid metal screw-on hood, that both restricts stray light and protects the lens. Being able to screw a 30.5mm filter into the INSIDE of the hood affords further protection without spoiling the pancake lines of the lens at all.

I am probably the only person in the world who actually likes the metal screw-on lens cap; when in place the impression is of an impregnable bomb shelter. Yes, the cap is a little slow to remove (just over two full turns are required), but that suits my methodical approach. If you are walking round with this lens on your camera looking for random opportunities, you should leave it off. The lens is well protected by the hood anyway.

The only two disadvantages of the tiny pancake length of this lens are (i) the focus ring is very thin and takes a little getting used to; and (ii) there is no room for a depth-of-field scale. However, neither of these is a major issue.

Auto-focussing is fast and accurate on my K-5. I like to use it with spot centre-auto (or manual) focussing to get the best out of it.

Although not particularly fast for a mid-focal length prime, it is important to recognize that the Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 is sharp wide open. I have no compunction in using it at full aperture, which would not be the case for many a fast standard lens. And of course, it really is fast compared to the 18-55mm kit lens which allows only f4.5 at 40mm.

By reputation, the pancake lens designs display very even sharpness across the frame, and that is certainly the case here. I have not yet seen any CA, though I haven't specifically tried to provoke it yet.

But for many people, the big question associated with this lens is "What do you use a 40mm (60mm equivalent) lens for?" It is a little longer than the old standard 50mm lenses on 35mm film cameras, and a little shorter than the short telephotos used for portraiture. I have taken a little while to come to terms with this issue, but am generally pretty comfortable with it now as a walk-around lens. I sometimes feel the need for something a bit wider but hey, that's what a SLR is for. Change lenses. The 40mm is also very natural for full upper body portraits.

Although certainly not a macro lens (minimum focus is 40cm and maximum magnification is 0.13), I have found this lens does a great job with flowers and other still life. The bokeh is smooth and unobtrusive.

All in all, this lens is a real favourite. I can see myself using it as one of my main lenses for years to come.

Like other people say, it's sharp, very good color, fast in AF, small, well made and visually attractive on my K-7.
I gave it 4 stars only because DA70 that I have is a bit better. This lens deserves 4.5 stars.

You will not believe how small and solidly made this lens is and will become your perfect walking around lens. I also like the perspective of the 40mm.
