To accommodate the demands for an affordable, lightweight and digital ready light meter, Sekonic redesigned the popular L-308BII. This meter offers the latest in component technology and precise calibration for accurate digital exposures. Software enhancements now offer the photographer a choice of Full, 1/2 or 1/3 step selectable aperture settings to display data just the way today's digital camera does.
With 1/10th of a stop measurement and read out, accurate and consistent exposures are a snap for D-SLRs or point and shoot digital cameras. The LCD panel has also been improved for better readability. Information such as ISO, measuring modes and selected settings has been redesigned similar to the very popular Sekonic L-358 FlashMaster.

I was looking for a simple way to set my strobes so I could shoot at f11. I didn't want to get 167 additional functions that I would never use - just a simple, accurate flashmeter. After a lot of research, I chose the L-308S and I must say that it was a great choice.
It is easy to use with no extra "junk" that I didn't want. It is fast and accurate. In setting up, I just place it next to the item I am shooting, flash the strobes and then adjust them until f11 comes up on the flashmeter. It is great - no second guessing and my exposures are right on. I don't even have to upload them to my computer to review them prior to finishing the shoot.
In shooting portraits, the same steps are followed. The model holds the flashmeter and a grey card and it's all set up and ready to go.
Overall, I am extremely happy with it and would recommend it to anyone needing an easy to use, reliable and repeatable meter.

I didn't realize when ordering this that it can only be operated in a mode that gives an EV reading or in shutter priority mode, where you select the shutter speed you want and it gives the corresponding aperture. Once you take the reading, you can push the up/down buttons to change the shutter speed until you get the aperture value you want, and you can then read the appropriate shutter speed. But this is a painfully inefficient way of doing things.
This meter works fine and seems accurate enough. It is just too basic for my purposes. And it offers no spot metering. If all you need is a basic incident light meter, and you don't mind the lack of aperture priority mode, then I see nothing wrong with it.
I don't use strobes, so I didn't test the flash metering.
The ambient light mode without the lumisphere is a bit problematic as you don't know what field of view you are covering and it has no shade, so a bright light source like the sun, even if it is out of the field of view of your shot, would often strike the lens, cause substantial flare, and throw off the reading.
I decided to just use my Sigma DP2s as my light meter for my large format work as I can do spot metering and can see exactly what I am metering, and I can use exposure compensation (you can change the ISO to accomplish that on the l308s). I have much more control. The biggest drawback there is that I cannot select very small apertures like f/64. So some math is needed when I need small apertures.

I tried to see what can be done with the L-308S Flashmate Light Meter by Sekonic and from what I can tell it is going to work fine. It will help me with setting the meter in my DSLR to the right area of the picture I want am taking. That means it will help me with focusing on the main subject better if I am trying to make one some of the objects stand out more. Then it will also help with setting the camera meter to having a great focus detail on the entire picture when I am taking a shot of very important elements that fit in the and are need for complete detail between everything.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:
I bought this light meter for a studio lighting class that I am taking. I've been doing photography for a while and never really bothered with a light meter. This meter is incredibly easy to use and allows for me to be very deliberate with my lighting techniques. I mostly use it for incident readings since my camera does reflective. Its definitely worth the money.

I use this meter for both flash and available light, exposures are spot on, and fits into all my camera bags. One improvement, I would love to have one about the size of a pocket watch that works as well as this one.

Takes care of all your needs. Measures Ambient, Incident, and Reflective light accurately. It only uses 1 AA battery and lasts a long time. Lighy plastic contruction, but well built. Just like any other equipment, be careful with it. Does what it is suppose to do at a reasonable price point.

The Light Meter is certainly light. I have only used it so far to get acquainted with how it works. The light metering is responsive. I do find the documentation sorely lacking.

My love is outdoor photography & I find this light meter to be all I need. It is fast, accurate, and easy to use. It also works well with indoor flash.
It is compact and easy to carry and comes with a protective pouch for transportation and a strap for around the neck carrying and easy access when in the field. I would highly recomend this product to all photographers whether pro or just enjoying photography as a hoby.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:
If you understand the big three of photography: aperture, time(shutter speed), and ISO, and their relationship to each other and to available light, including added light, then this takes the guess work out of what you are trying to do.
Very simple to use, but for the average, as well as the pro, a hand held meter will improve your images if you take the time to use it. It takes the interpretation of reflected light out of your camera and let's it use precise falling light which more often than not is the more accurate light thus yielding the truer image. I was one who thought a meter was not necessary until I picked up a used 30 year old Gossen Pilot 2 for $10 and saw so much improvement from that I decided to go digital and am glad I did. My off the camera flash is so much easier to set up now and the intricate colors on such things as birds are showing through as I meter at the feeder rather than 40 feet away as small part of a great big reflection.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:
I love this meter. If you need a meter for a decent price that gets the job done, can read reflective and incident readings, reads continuous light, flash, and is lightweight this is the meter for you. I have used other Sekonic products like the Sekonic L-358 but in my opinion I will take a L-308S over a L-358 any day. Donʻt get me wrong itʻs a great meter as well but itʻs just more complicated. i only needed a meter that would read what i need it to read and was simple and quick to operate. you can teach someone that knows nothing about lighting how to use it and understand exposure in a minute. The only thing is that itʻs made of a really light plastic so if you are not too careful with it, there is a chance it will break. overall great light meter.

This is a very nice, lower priced, light meter that works perfectly indoors or out. It is light enough to carry in your shirt pocket and durable enough for long hikes or work days. I really like the ease of use. A truly "set it and forget it" light meter.

Comments about Sekonic L-308S Flashmate Light Meter:
I was somewhat skeptical about this smaller meter, but that is what I needed. I have the L-558, but sometimes in the field it is just too bulky.
When I received the L-308S, I took it to the field to do comparisons with the L-558. Consistently, the smaller unit yield either the same or very close to the same data.
There are some limitations to the L-308S, but nothing that are deal busters. Namely, it only has Shutter priority.
So what; minor inconvenience. Take your reading, check your Aperture, and as you adjust the shutter speed, the Aperture reading changes accordingly. True, it is nicer to have the Aperture priority, as controlling Depth of Field (DOF) is more important to me, but the results are the same.
Only one ISO setting -- so what. I am quite capable to do basic arithmetic in my head. You do remember the word "arithmetic," don't you? If not, it is a lower form of mathematics. ;-)
By all means, if you are considering this, buy it.
One last note. It comes with a cord and a nice little pouch. The battery cover can come off as you pull to remove the unit from the pouch, if you're not careful. When using it, however, I put the cord around my neck and the unit in my right front pocket--it fits with room to spare.
