I was using the Bogen / Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action Ballhead and I do like the ease & quickness of this head but it did not perform well with my 70-200mm f/2.8 or my 100-400mm w/1.4 extender mounted on it. It just couldn't handle the weight. I was comtemplating the Wimberly Gimbal head but at almost $600.00, I looked for alternatives. I read about the 468MG HYDROSTATIC BALL HEAD w/RC2 and decided that at half the price of the Wimberly, to give it a try. I am so glad I did. It is small, fast, easy & very strong. My 100-400mm w/1.4 extender doesn't move a bit. It is rated for 22 lbs and is rock solid. The hydralic knobs are easy to the touch and just a slight turn locks this into place. It also has a panning knob which is also very smooth. The RC2 quick release plate also matches my other Bogen/Manfrotto heads so that I can use the same plates on the 3 different heads I have.

Great Ballhead but it cant handle the cold. The Hydrostatic system failed, i.e. froze/burst, while on a trip to China. Manfrotto was kind enough to inform me, after the fact, that it can not be subjected to a temp below -10 degree Fahrenheit. China and many parts of the US get colder than -10F during the winter. It gets even colder when checked on an airline. Manfrotto replaced the Ballhead with a 3-Way Head, model 229, and I'm purchasing an Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 for my lightweight travel Ballhead.

Comments about Manfrotto 468MGRC2 Hydrostatic Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

I've never been a big fan of tripods. They've always been used only when absolutely necessary and nearly against my will. I've never liked all of the knobs and levers to adjust on tripods to get things roughly right and then all over again to make adjustments. This hydrostatic ballhead has a single lever for panning and a double knob for everything else. I absolutely love how I can adjust the grip the ballhead has via the smaller friction knob so that I can make fine adjustments without having to loosen and then re-tighten for hold. Get it just right and it'll hold a D700 + grip setup just fine while I make sure things are all level.I know choose to bring my tripod setup to shoots where I would not have otherwise.

This is the finest ball head I have used to date, a example of you get what you pay for...I am sure there are other fine tools out there as well, however I have set my system's to work with the RC2 plates and the interchange ability's amongst the components I own and this new head are exactly what I was looking for ...

Comments about Manfrotto 468MGRC2 Hydrostatic Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

This ballhead is really quite good. The locking mechanism is quick and easy. And once you set it, there's no perceptible movement in the action.

Everything except the quick-release. I've since swapped out the RC2 plate system with a normal arca-style mount. A highly recommended and easy swap (just 2 screws).

I am a nature photographer with a tremor in my hand. I need a ballhead that is really steady. The friction function focuses the camera enough for me to then make other adjustments without the camera moving. I just got this ballhead 2 weeks ago and I am pleased.

I've recommended this ball head to all my students for the past several years. Finally, I purchased one for my professional use.The smooth action, ability to set the friction to fit one's hand strength, and speed in composing the shot make this the ball head to buy - in my opinion. It is durable enough to support my 500mm lens/camera combination and definitely supports any of my students' equipment.I've wanted to buy this ball head since I've been recommending it. 20+ students have followed my advice and purchased them. Now I can "lead by example."

I've been using the Hydrostatic Ballhead for a few weeks now and am adjusting to it nicely. It's so easy to attach and remove my camera body and adjusting the ballhead is a breeze. I think we are going to work well together. I am using this ballhead on a new Manfrotto Carbon Fiber tripod. I hike to unusual places to shoot wedding and engagement pictures and I love having the lightweight, yet stable equipment.

Comments about Manfrotto 468MGRC2 Hydrostatic Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

I started with a Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 tripod, I added the Manfrotto 204SPK3, retractable spiked feet. To complete my tripod I added this ballhead. The friction adjustment makes it very easy to make fine adjustments and the head locks quickly and solidly with minimal effort. I can live with this set up for years to come. The total package is around 5 lbs. and provides a solid base for my photography. This head weighs about a half pound more than the lightest quality heads, but the ease of operation more than makes up for the extra weight in my book. I do not have any exceptionally heavy equipment so I am perfectly happy with the RC2 plate system. It locks securely with minimal play and I appreciate the double safety lock that prevents accidental release.

Comments about Manfrotto 468MGRC2 Hydrostatic Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

I ordered this prior to shooting the Perseids meteor shower of August 2013. It easily held my Nikon DX sensor camera + fisheye lens. RC2 plate is excellent, but I already had one attached to my camera since I use it with a 322RC2 grip action ballhead.

The 468MGRC2 is rated for 22 lbs, doubling the 11-lb rating for the 322RC2 I've used a lot for moon photography with a long zoom lens + teleconverter. The grip action is desirable since the moon moves, and so it's easier to adjust for that. However, it is not the easiest to make micro-adjustments with the trigger handle at high magnification, and I hope with some practice, I should be able to make the small adjustments with the 468MGRC2.

I'm looking forward to more landscape photography with this, as the base can be loosened to swivel 360°, so taking pics to stitch into panoramas should be a breeze.

I recommended the accessories below, because I can quickly switch over to the strap and be more more responsive to whatever action is taking place.

I've had this head for a week now and love it. I was worried about the locking mechanism looking a bit strange but it's the perfect way of doing it. The only thing I wish was different but not a big deal, but I would like if the twist knob also freed up the rotation portion.

I have been very indecisive for quite some time on which new head to buy and this was an amazing choice, despite it's a little heavy but lighter than my grip head, it holds up and functions phenomenally. Smooth very quick which is important to me and holds my pro dslr with 70-200 2.8. You cant go wrong.

Comments about Manfrotto 468MGRC2 Hydrostatic Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

Purchased in 2005, this ballhead has travelled around the world on my Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. Unlike other reviewers here, I've had no problems using this head in temps as low as -25C (-13F), -40C with the windchill. It's a tough and durable head, having survived several falls, sandstorms, rainstorms and more! That said, after thousands of install and removal from the Quick Release clamping mechanism, the locking lever handle no longer keeps the camera or lens plates tightly locked into the ballhead's mounting plate.Perhaps this is normal "wear and tear" and to be expected after this much use... so if you only use this ballhead occasionally, you may never encounter this problem. If you are doing pano photography, the degree etchings in the flange at the base could be better. That's the reason for the 4 stars.TIP: To minimize damage to the lever mechanism and plate, push the brass button where the cam plate fits in, to close the lever, then fold down the plate with the handle pointed down in the side slot. I've seen photog's with snapped-off levers after their tripod took a fall.

Comments about Manfrotto 468MGRC2 Hydrostatic Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

I originally tried the Manfrotto 327RC2 PRO MAG JOYSTICK BALL HEAD. I found it nearly impossible to make finite adjustments while framing my subject. The joystick also got in the way several times while shooting weird angles near the ground.

This hydrostatic ballhead is very smooth and easy to use. I love how you can set your primary angle and pan without changing the frame (horizontally).

The head is very strong and has no problem supporting anything I own.

The only complaint I have is when using the release mechanism, the little stop does not reset automatically like it did on the joystick ball head. You have to manually close the quick release stop before you can load the camera onto the ballhead. I have looked closely and I am not sure if there is a casting issue preventing the lock from returning to closed or if the mount is designed this way.

Comments about Manfrotto 468MGRC2 Hydrostatic Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release:

I use this ballhead for architecture and landscape work. INCREDIBLY light for the stability it provides. It's very easy to make minor precise adjustments. I've been using an extremely heavy pan/tilt head with three knobs that always get in the way and sometimes limited me in taking certain shots because the knobs would be either poking me in the eye or the neck. This ballhead is far easier and convenient to carry than a tripod with three knobs sticking out.WELL WORTH THE MONEY. Everyone has different preferences but I wish I would've bought this years ago instead of going with a friends recommendation of a pan/tilt head. And I never used the bubble levels on the pan/tilt anyway so those are not missed. Some online reviewers state that a ballhead can't be used for precise adjustments for architectural photography. With this head, that simply isn't true. You can adjust the tension to make those minor aligning adjustments to make sure your shot is level. This ballhead has made photography that much more enjoyable for me.

I bought this as an upgrade after purchasing a long lens. This is easy to adjust, very fluid. Not a lot to say... When you need it to be firm, it is unmoving like it was fused. Good heft.
