Manfrotto 468MGRC3 Magnesium Hydrostatic Ballhead - Supports 35.3 lb (16kg)

Product Highlights
  • RC3 Quick Release

The Manfrotto 468MGRC3 is designed to meet the demands of professional photographers who require a light weight head but at the same time want to support heavy camera loads up to 35.3 lb.

The 468MG series uses a hydraulic system to lock the ball mechanism in place. Using hydraulics instead of a mechanical system produces a super-tight lock from a minimal turn of the locking knob, without sacrificing the smoothness of the ball's movement when unblocked. To keep weight low, the head is made of magnesium; and to provide smooth movements the 2" aluminum ball is Teflon coated. The oversized ball locking knob allows for easy control even when using gloves.

This head further offers a range of handy features: independent pan and tilt locks with a 360° pan movement; +90/-90° tilt movement; a graduated engraved panoramic base; and a calibrated adjustable friction control on the main knob.

The 468MGRC3 version uses the RC3 (3272) quick release plate, which uses the long sliding video-type plate that allows you enough room for maneuver to balance long heavy lenses safely above the center of gravity of the head/tripod, ensuring maximum support from your tripod even when your camera is off-horizontal.

It's a shame that there aren't very many reviews of this fine ball head on the web. I've owned mine for over two years now, bought used at B&H for about $100 less than new, and it has performed flawlessly. The hydrostatic head locks incredibly tight with just a minimal turn of the locking knob, which is rubberized. I use it mostly with EF 70-200L f/2.8 IS and a 300L f/4 IS lenses and extenders, and a Canon 5D (not exactly light combinations), and it DOES NOT DRIFT, no matter what angle it is aimed. Even with a good deal of applied of force, it will not move, so I'm sure it would have no problem with a lens up to the size of an 11.5 lb. 400L 2.8 IS (wish I could afford one!). It's not a gimbal head by any means, but it is very versatile and light.By tweaking the friction knob, one can easily use this head in the field for tracking wildlife. Once set, I have been able to easily pan to different positions, and if horizontally aimed, I rarely need to tighten the locking knob. I haven't used it in the winter, so I can't comment on the performance of the hydrostatics (oil) in cold weather. The locking mechanism for the quick-release plate is very secure, and there is a safety catch which must be depressed to disengage it from the head. I have a Q-R plate for each lens I use. In addition, with this model, the plates are long enough to allow the user to fine-tune them for the center of gravity of each lens used. Once attached, they remain very securely affixed to the lens. Another plus is that they are relatively inexpensive. All in all, a real performer, and highly recommended

Problems Encountered: None yet. Haven't used it in the winter, but I would think that the oil would thicken up a bit in the cold.I also doubt that the other models with the smaller quick-release plates would be as secure as this one, but I've not tried them.

Well, my main issue was taking vertical shots with 5D mark II w/ battery pack and the heavy 70-200mm lens. I am still having issues even with this expensive head. It is great for horizontal camera work; but there are cheapter, better heads on the market. An advantage this has over others is that there is an option to pan.

I'm using this ballhead for heavy spotting scopes. Smooth traverse. Easy to fine-tune the ball-head adjustability with the friction knob. Locks up rock solid with a small twist of the knob.
Very fine Manfrotto construction. Highly recommended!

This ballhead is built for the job! It will hold most of your gear tight in place with no drifting. I use this ballhead with Manfrotto 055CXPRO 3-SECTION TRIPOD - MA055CXPRO3 and the combination is more than perfect with my Canon 1D Mark3 and 70-200 IS. The ballhead is easy to adjust and takes little effort (just a twist) to hold your gears in place in any angle. The plus side is that it also comes with different screw sizes to fit a wide range of DSLRs and others.

I purchased this ball head to use with the Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Tripod. I am extremely pleased with both the tripod and the ball head. This head is build to last and has a strong clamp with no creep. You can tighten with very little force applied to the knob. I also like the friction control knob.

Comments about Manfrotto 468MGRC3 Magnesium Hydrostatic Ballhead - Supports 35.3 lb (16kg):

It was this or another $200 for the Acra Swiss Z1. It handles all my combinations very well. I got it because my 468rc2 couldn't adequately handle the D20 and 70-200L f2.8 together - too much weight. The action is very smooth and easy to adjust for panning or up/down movement and the calibrated base makes stitching/overlapping shots a breeze.

It's heavy and well built requiring little effort to obtain the proper setting. I'm hoping it will also handle any bigger combinations I get in the future. The quick release makes for a fast setup.

So far I couldn't be happier.

This is a perfect ballhead for animal and bird photography where rock-steadiness is a must. Yet it's adjustability is there, too, with a slight twist of the knob. The RC3 Rapid Connect works great on my 100-400 zoom as well as on my camera alone.

Comments about Manfrotto 468MGRC3 Magnesium Hydrostatic Ballhead - Supports 35.3 lb (16kg):

The is a great ball head. Finally something that works. I have found this very easy use and locks up tight every time. I have a Nikon VR F2 200 lens witch is very heavy on a D300 and on this ball head doesn't move what so ever. It glides very smoothly from left to right when you loosen the bottom lock and still no movement up or down. I use this ball head for almost every thing I shoot mounted on a Manfrotto tripod, weddings, portraits, architecture.

I gave it a five star rating really because I was happy it does the job I wanted it to. Saying that, it still is a little pricey and its not the lightest ball head out there. But, for bigger lenses I need the quality in stability and with quality always comes price. Still happy I bought it, you wouldn't be disappointed with it!
