First of all I need to start this review out by stating that I find this optic to be nothing short of revolutionary. The whole concept of allowing the user to control spherical abberation and to choose whether they want a softer foreground or background is phenomenal. The DC ring on the lens adjusts spherical abberation by under or over-correcting for spherical abberation. When a lens is over-corrected for spherical abberation, you have soft out of focus foreground elements and harsh out of focus background elements. When a lens is *under* corrected for spherical abberation, you have the reverse - soft background elements and harsh foreground elements. When the DC ring is set at the neutral position, the lens is given average correction for spherical abberation, which means that both the foreground and background elements will have neutral out of focus characteristics, and they will have a uniform solid disk shape in intensity. This lens has a reputation for fine performance wide open at f/2, and stunning image quality between f/2.8 and f/4. My sample backs up these claims. Not only is the in-focus subject supremely sharp, but by using the defocus control feature you can progressively soften the background (or foreground) from pleasingly soft to effectively un-defined mush. Color and contrast are absolutely top-notch. And, if that isn't enough, you can also set the lens to give a very, very subtle soft focus effect. This effect is far more pleasing and not quite as right in your face as what a high quality soft focus filter would give. Very classy and tasteful soft focus effects can be used for portraits of people who more or less can benefit from a bit of soft focus. But as stated, the effect isn't as obvious as a soft focus filter. This may very well be THE most perfect portrait lens in 35mm photography. Nikon specifically designed this lens around portraiture. However, this lens can also be used as a general purpose lens for photographers who are looking for a medium telephoto lens to use in low light. I have used this lens for theater photography with relatively fast film with great results. Ergonomics and handling of this lens are excellent. Manual focusing is fantastic. Very well dampened. Construction quality is made out of metal (not all that common these days) with Nikon's professional crinkle finish. Comes with build in lens shade. Nikon has never really gotten behind these series of lenses and really sold them to the photographic public. A very high percentage of owners of this lens do not even bother using the defocus control feature, and leave it at neutral. Some photographers have claimed that the DC ring settings have virtually no effect, which is untrue. From one setting (on one side of the ring) to the next the effect is subtle for sure. But the effect of the DC lens have been well established. What is puzzling is that I have even tried to find literature about this lens and have come up empty. It really amazes me that Nikon would put the amount of engineering into a lens like this and then not provide a solid amount of promotion at least amongst professional photographers. In conclusion, I should note that this is a very, very expensive piece of glass. If you are interested in doing first-rate portrait photography, this would be an excellent investment, but if you are not interested in doing portrait photography or distance shots in low light, then this would be a very unwise purchase decision.

Problems Encountered: None, aside from occasionally having the DC ring set to a value different than the aperture I am going to use. Most of the time it is at neutral.

Previous Equivalent Items Owned: DC is, as mentioned before, fairly unique

Items I Recommend: Nikon SLR, digital or otherwise, and a good subject

I haven't gotten the hang of the defocus control. Mostly, the images just seem blurry when I use it. I'm hoping this improves with practice. However, the images I've shot so far with this lens have been gorgeous when the DC is set to the same aperture (eliminating the defocus effect). The lens is still very new to me, but the fashion-style portraits I've done with it have that great editorial look that I love. Great bokeh at 2.0. I mostly shoot with the 85, but the 105 might get put into regular rotation.

Comments about Nikon Telephoto AF DC Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D Lens:

This lens is insanely sharp! I've researched this lens online for 2 years. I finally pulled the trigger and purchased it, for a wedding I had to shoot. Plus I wanted to get more into portrait images. I am so thrilled with this lens. The BOKEH is worth it even without the DC. DC is an awesome feature too. But the bokeh is amazing even without the dc. The bokeh is like an artists brush strokes. I am thrilled with this lens and I decided between this and the macro 2.8. Glad I got this lens!!!

I was a little worried switching from Canon to Nikon. For portraits, I used to use the 85mm f/1.8 lens. I was really worried diving in to Nikon having to give that lens up. I've had this lens for a month now, and wow. I really love this thing. The defocus control allows for some interesting effects.Great lens for portraits....I love it.

I can't believe I've waited over ten years to pick up this excellent portrait lens. Had I experienced it sooner, it would have been in my camera bag a long time ago. I've used it both outdoors with natural light and indoors with available light (without flash) and got great results. The images are sharp, the bokeh nice, and color is accurate.

There have been comments where D700 owners had to do an autofocus adjustment to get a sharp image. After testing (from +20 to -20 on this adjustment) and shooting the same image from a tripod I can say that my D700 was able to autofocus correctly with no adjustment at all. The lens is everything that the best reviews said it would be: tack sharp with a beautiful bokeh. The DC feature (when used correctly - set DC to aperture number and no more) also works well.

Great portrait/headshot tool BUT one needs to become one with it to master it's use. Very easy to drop off focus on the second eye when used at maximum bokeh. Backgrounds turn beautiful... buttery smooth. Sweet lense at 105mm, not too far from subjects, not too close. Moderately heavy, built like a tank, solid stuff.

This is truly one of my favorite lenses and I have shot with several nikon lenses ranging from fisheye to the 135mm. This lens is on my camera about 90% of the time for my portrait sessions. It is tack sharp. The bokeh is so creamy and I love how it makes my subjects stand out against the background. I have not had a chance to play with the DC control yet, but I am looking forward to experimenting with it.

I had my bags packed to shoot a small wedding last weekend and thought I'd take along my new 105 DC. I attached it for the hair-and-makeup shots and a few quick portraits ... and then kept it on throughout the ceremony until it was time to take the group shots. The creamy color and bokeh I was getting had my heart pounding. (DC was left on 2R the entire time.) As soon as I'd taken several wide-angle shots at the reception, this lens was back on my camera. I've gone through about 600 NEF shots taken at the wedding, and I'm thrilled. Having such a brilliant lens is a time saver, as I've had to do very little WB adjusting.

The one thing I will say is that this is a 105mm prime, so it's not a good lens for cramped quarters. If you're trying to decide whether to get the 135 DC or this one, get the 105. I think you'll find it to be more versatile.

Comments about Nikon Telephoto AF DC Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D Lens:

I didn't have this lens very long. I could not get a sharp image from it with and without the defocus control engaged. It may very well have been operator error but none the less I decided to simplify my photographic life by opting for the Nikon 105 micro lens instead which has been a good decision for me. Many consumers have rated this lens very high so this may well have been an exception to most everyone else's experience. Couple of things to think about: this lens does not have VR or micro ability so if that is of interest might want to rethink things.

Comments about Nikon Telephoto AF DC Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D Lens:

This prime lens is great for portraiture work. It took some getting used to, moving from an 85mm lens. In studio, it provides a great distance advantage over the 85mm. Flattens the depth of field nicely. I bought the grey market lens and saved hundreds. Unlikely to have a warranty issue with this lens. The lens is old school in construction, which I love. It has a built-in, retracting metal lens hood. No complaints about the lens optical quality. It's very sharp.

Great lens, sooooo sharp. I would recommend this lens to anyone. It's not too heavy, well worth the fantastic images I have taken with this lens. I used to carry around a Pentex 645 all day. Simple to use, set the DC for the f-stop you will be shooting at, then aim aim and shoot. Feels like a real lens in your hand. Well designed and manufactured. Outstanding Bokeh.

Comments about Nikon Telephoto AF DC Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D Lens:

Whether used for portraits, details or landscape, this fast-focusing and incredibly sharp lens is well worth the cost. Beautiful bokeh, whether you even bother using the defocus control option. I don't, and haven't missed it either. Although it's been around a while, this lens doesn't "hunt" during focusing like Nikon's much updated 105mm macro. I rarely even think of needing to use my 70-200 f2.8 if there's no need to get really close from a distance. And did I mention sharp? You really need to try it to believe it. Especially if you do weddings or portraits, buy this lens!

Comments about Nikon Telephoto AF DC Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D Lens:

There is a bit of a learning curve with this lens, so I would be wary of reviews giving it a low rating due to "blurry focus". I thought I had a defective copy until I spent some time practicing with it. I considered getting the 85 1.4 but I opted for the longer focal length and superior build quality.

Comments about Nikon Telephoto AF DC Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D Lens:

I use this lens for amateur portrait work, landscapes, and a combination of the two. using it on my D90 camera you need to stand very far back, on FX the distance is just about correct. Red is highlighted with this lens, if you are using a D90 like I do and have saturation bumped up to 2, you need to bring it back to 1 or anything red is extremely saturated. Lens takes very sharp pictures. On my D600 everything is excellent, people "pop", flowers "pop" and oh the bokah is divine, the lens expensive but for my money it was well worth it, without VR and being shaky I find using a tripod is easier for me to take an excellent picture with this lens. For some reason my lens won't AF on white, which might not work out for weddings while taking portraits of a new groom in shock wondering what he had just done, I haven't tried.
