Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

I bought my Nikon 20mm f/2.8 AIS lens for night time Astrophotography.

When paired with a full body/grip Nikon D800 it's extremely light and easy to shoot with. Hand held shots are easier to perform without shaking. I never tire using this lens.

What I like most is it's sharpness and warm colors.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

I could have bought a used 20mm for less, although even older versions of it are pricey. But I wanted the latest coating on the glass, and I wanted to once again see a new lens just as I could have bought 15 or 20 years ago. It seems they do still make them the way they used to. The lens is very well made and gorgeous. Focus is smooth as silk, and the aperture ring has excellent detent. The glass is just beautiful. And with all that, it is a sharp little thing. If you have a Nikon Df in particular, you want this lens. But it would also be fine on a D800/E or any other Nikon camera.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

Compared with too many other lenses, including some from Nikon, it is reassuring to have a lens with no unintentional Carpentier/Schiempflug effect built-in courtesy of 'mechanical slop' & the 'looseness' dictated by AF mechanisms. This lens is smooth, solid, built to a tight tolerance, and a pleasure to use. I also have the matching 28 mm & the Voigtlander 40 mm - no AF, no slop, & smooth operation. B&H were also a pleasure to deal with. Therefore: old fashion optics (& good performance), & old fashion service.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

This is a completely manual lens. You are forced to take a bit more time composing your shot, and as a result it is not the lens for action, sports or things like children or animals.

That being said, it takes marvelous photos with great color and sharpness, and has a solid construction. The aperture ring is slightly slippy when at the smallest aperture, but sits firmly in its setting. The focus is sharp and easy to operate.

4/5 only because of the slipping aperture ring, and because it is slightly more difficult to line up than the more modern lenses when you put it on.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

I use wide lenses for the landscape and architectural photography that I do. I already own the 14-24mm Nikkor zoom which is wonderful, but I needed a prime lens that was a bit more portable for situations that require minimal equipment when traveling. I chose this 20mm manual focus because it is sharp, compact and is beautifully built. No plastic. I chose this manual over the 20mm autofocus because I believe it will hold up to more rugged use. I'm planning to take it on a trip abroad later this year and I don't want to have to worry about the 14-24 bulk. I'm using this lens with a D800 and so far it has performed extremely well. I'm pleased with the sharpness, contrast and feel--particularly the feel of the manual focus. The only thing that's odd is that the lens is shipped without a hood. You need to get an HK-14 (had to order this separately.) I suppose there are other lens hoods that are compatible and are easier to obtain, but I decided to just order the HK-14.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

I bought this lens to use as a wide-angle mainly for lanscape. It takes getting used to as it is completely manual. The lens is simply glass and metal. "They don't make them like that any more" certainly applies here. For the typical uses a wide-angle lens like this one, auto focus does not matter and in my opinion manual is better. The focus ring is buttery smooth and very high quality. It is only matched by another classic the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 AIS. I think it might be on its way to be discontinued. It is being replaced by the newer auto focus lenses that don't come close to the build quality or performance of the classics like this one.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

I bought this for an FX body to 1) provide a filter-capable option to the 14-24mm f/2.8, and 2) provide a wide-angle option for a light hiking kit when I do not want to lug around the f/2.8 zooms. I went for the manual focus versus the AF version of the 20mm due to reviews. At f/2.8 center is sharp, but things degrade badly even half-way out toward the edges. At f/5.6 things are pretty sharp, and at f/8 and f/11, it approaches (but does not equal) the 14-24mm. If you need f/2.8 this is NOT the lens you want. Even stopped down, does it match the 14-24? Of course not, but it is a joy to carry, and to me its nice to be able to use normal filters rather than the expensive (and physically large/cumbersome) options for filters with the 14-24.

Used the lens extensively on some landscape shoots and am extremely happy with the fine results on the super D800E.

I purchased this lens for timelapse work on Nikon D3X/D2X cameras. With the D3X the 20 mm is wide enough for fairly wide field shots for nightime timelapses of stars. The lens is sharp wide open. the focus ring has a nice feel.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

When large wide angle zoom lenses become inconvenient to carry along, I take this little beauty out. It is beautifully built and performs excellently at all apertures. Its light weight and compact design makes it a very viable lens. Its manual focus is sure and precise. While shooting in harsh sunlight, a lens hood is recommended.

For landscapes, street roaming, close quarters; beautifully made the oldfashioned way never surpassed by Nikon; has silky smooth focusing and,
oh yes, the aperture ring with reassuringly firm clicks at full stops.

I like manual focus lenses. This 20mm lens is compact, quick to focus, and has a solid feel. I use it on a Nikon D300 and am very pleased with the results.

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

This is my favorite wide angle to date. I was in Istanbul recently and this was on my camera about 80% time. Between it and my 85mm f/2 AI I didn't nee anything else. Minimal distortion makes it a great architectural lens. It's incredibly crisp from f/4 to f/16 and definitely seems sharper than the AF 20mm (which is sharp to start with). Keep in mind it won't meter with anything under a D7000; and no autofocus means its not much for moving targets, but for any sort wide angle still short of 14mm sort of ultrawide its pretty ideal. And the construction just feels so right to the touch. Nothing quite like manual focus Nikkors

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

I purchased this lens in 1993 before heading to Nepal for two years. This lens became one of my favorite lenses very quickly. I purchased it for use on my F3 and FM bodies but have since then purchased several digital bodies. The 20mm lens works fine with these bodies as well in manual focus but with the DX format renders a 30 mm equivalent. Look forward to purchasing an FX body to put this lens back to work for full 20mm. Slight vignette at f2.8 but images are very sharp. Use the depth of field scale frequently to get maximum depth in images. I miss the depth of field scale on newer lenses. Glad to see this lens is still available!

Comments about Nikon NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 AIS Manual Focus Lens:

It is important to know that to use this lens on a Nikon D700 you must go to the Setup Menu, then to Non-CPU lens data and enter a few lens parameters. This is very quick and easy to do. Despite being a manual focus lens, sharp focus is a cinch. Focusing is also dead silent with exquisitely smooth tactile feedback because of its high quality construction. Having taken hundreds of photos with this lens, I can say that my pictures are sharp and clear with beautiful color. My long exposure night shots are absolutely gorgeous. The wide field of view is exactly what I wanted for outdoor shots, and even for many indoor shots. However, one must be careful to try to keep the camera oriented vertically to avoid "keystoning". Compared to my Nikkor 70-200 VRII, this lens is very small and very lightweight. Though it is not my main lens (I still prefer my AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D for most work), it is a joy to own and use. (Having said that, I must warn that it requires considerable care and a delicate touch to mount it on the camera, because the lens doesn't have a white "mounting alignment dot". Please be very careful when attaching this lens to your camera.) I recommend it highly, with no reservations at all. (B&H required disclosure: I purchased this lens with my own personal funds about 4 months ago. I don't regret paying one penny. I have received no compensation for writing this review.)
