I got this camera basically to experiment with, and get into the wondeful world of medium format. I got got the pictures from the first roll I shot with this camera. In a nutshell, I was "blown away" I truly love this camera. It is a fun camera to use, and it is a welcomed break from the digital age. The things that are great about it...everything! I highly recommend this camera for anyone, especially those who want to dabble in medium format, without spending a fortune. Great camera, if I had to do it all again, I would still buy this camera. Love it, love it, & LOVE IT!!!

I took the camera with me to Amsterdam to do some travel photograph. It's as simple to use as they come and a great inexpensive way to get into medium format photography for almost no money.
Downside it's as simple as they come. The film advance doesn't stop on it's own so if you're not used to that then you may be advancing the film more than necessary.

Comments about Holga 144-120 120N Medium Format Camera (Black):

I have used Holgas for almost 15 years. I take "serious" photos with them. Yes, they are difficult because of their simplicity.
Use lots of tape so they don't fall apart. Holgas are more durable than you think. This purchase replaced on that I travelled twice around the world with.

Terrific surprises paticularly at times of interesting and dramatic light.
You never know what you are going to get and how the settings will reveal what this little leaky lightbox has to offer. Get one...or two.

Comments about Holga 144-120 120N Medium Format Camera (Black):

The Holga is a cheap, plastic throwback to pre-35mm days. It is used for photography classes as an inexpensive, artsy camera for students (that's what I bought it for). It is minimally adjustable for learning the basics of focal distance, aperture and depth of field. It works fine as far as that goes, but don't expect to take quality, high resolution pictures. With this one, do research and know what you're buying or you'll be disappointed.

Comments about Holga 144-120 120N Medium Format Camera (Black):

I bought this inexpensive camera, which has been my first experience with medium format. Everything is made out of plastic, including the lens, except for the metal strips on the side that hold the loose back of the camera in place. I would strongly recommend that you use gaffer tape around the edges of the back after you load the film, to reduce light leaks (unless you prefer them.) This also serves to help keep the back from falling off, since the metal clips tend to either be too tight or too loose and do not seem to be extremely reliable. I haven't had the film developed yet, but I am very interested to see how my shots turn out; it is also possible to buy a 35mm adapter so that you can use regular film (local film developers tend not to be able to process 120 film) but to me a big part of the appeal is using medium format. Don't expect sharpness, this is more of a fun camera for experimenting and taking interesting artistic shots.
The concern that I have is that I do hear some piece inside somewhere rattling around, which is a bit annoying at times, but it seems to stop when I have film loaded in the camera.
I would recommend keeping the camera in a dark bag when not in use, and I also recommend that you get into the habit of putting the lens cap on after each shot (although of course it is critical to remove it when you're ready to take another picture.) This is to reduce light leaks through the lens. One other tip is to create a flap to go over the film counter window at the back of the camera, as some light can get through that infared windown depending on what type of film you are using.
I would not use slide film with this camera unless you have a light meter and know how to use it well, since the limited choice of apertures (8/f and 11/f) and shutter speeds (a bulb mode that is incompatible with any shutter release cable I am aware of, and a default speed that can be anywhere from 1/30 to 1/100 depending on how much you've used it and the randomness of the manufacturing process.) It's better to go with a color negative film that will be forgiving of moderate under or over-exposure, because you have less control over the settings.

Being able to load such a quality size film and advance frames as much or as little as you desire gives this camera an edge over all others. And nothing beats handing it to a 5 year old and not worrying if they drop it or take the best picture you've ever seen.

the Holga 120N is the most low tech and most poorly built camera out there, but you just gotta love the images this camera can crank out! yes it has it's limitations but what it can do it does very nicely and for the price that they sell at... this really is getting the best bang for your buck, I highly recommend this product.

Bought 10 for my photo camp - I teach tweens & teens photography and I wasn't sure how they would react to going 'old skool'.

                            They loved it.
They loved not knowing how the image would come out.
They loved the fact they could create multiple exposures.

                            They had fun.

Really - there is no downside.

A fun old school flash back camera. Gives photos that 60's feel. Low price. Tough to find local film developing.

So far I have only used it twice. It is exactly what I expected from a Holga except the light leaks, but since I'm not interested in the light leak effect, it's fantastic. I shot some simple landscapes with BW film and received some great vignetting on the corners. I love the bulb option on this. I used a tripod with almost all my shots (which was in late afternoon and morning), set it on bulb and exposed for almost a second. I had great negs and prints were beautiful. All in all, I am very happy with it!

I use this product just because it looks like a fun little camera, nothing professional, but its great fun you can do double exposure overlapping, panoramic, etc. very easy to use very fun to develop. Remember this camera is more toy then a serious camera, thats why i give it 4 stars.

I use this camera to take experimental outdoor shots. Because of the price I haven't worried about dropping it, but even if you do it can take that hit. The best part about this camera is that it makes film photography simple yet fun. The real challenge for artistic value comes in post production printing or scanning.

Comments about Holga 144-120 120N Medium Format Camera (Black):

The Holga produces some fantastic effects, definitely try it out! I thought with a plastic lens and very few controls that my images would be all over the place, but not so. If you don't know, there's one shutter speed and two f-stops (8 is 'cloudy' and 11 is 'sunny'). There is a bulb setting too. To focus, you choose the relative distance of your subject. I did landscapes and more close-range shots and had success with both. By shooting in fairly strong light (for me this is between 10 and 4 or so) with 400 speed film, I got almost consistent negatives, with a few exceptions. I love high contrast and a wide tonal range and got it without use of filters in the darkroom. I used Fomapan 400 Action film and got good results. I found it easier to load than Kodak.

With the Holga you'll get a nice black vignette on the corners of the frame, so using the entire frame to print has a nice effect, as would using a filed negative carrier. The photo also loses focus around the perimeter, producing a dream-like effect. Despite the fact that the focusing ring is less than precise, my photos all seemed crisp when I printed. I had a light leak every now and then, but it seemed more out of place than a happy accident.

One problem I had was with the back falling off. So make sure the clasps are secured, or you can tape it to make sure. If you dont, you can either advance it or lose 1 shot plus half a frame on either side. So advancing two shots should do the trick, but you'll still lose half an exposure.

I would like to try flash, although it might be a bit trickier because you can't control the f-stop/shutter speed as much. Portraits would also be interesting. Definitely give the Holga a try!
