I have NEVER owned nor used a telescope before the celestron powerseeker 127eq. I am speechless.... throw all the bad reviews and complaints OUT THE WINDOW! Take your time during setup reading the manuel NOT the quick set up and you're worry free. The finderscope mount SHOULD be curved to fit the bigger tubes of the 114 and 127 ( its mass produced to fit the 60-127). Dispite this fact mine is pretty much SPOT ON! I just located the moon and centered it in the eyepiece then tweeked the finderscope a few times to center it up. DONT put the caps back on. Once u line the finderscope up, DONT TOUCH IT and it'll work like a champ. As for the eyepieces... A++ there as well. Maybe I got lucky or living away from light pollution helps but I've had NO problems with getting objects to focus with or without the barlow. You have to remember that the maximum useful magnification is 300. But I'll say again, ALL THE EYEPIECES EVEN WITH THE BARLOW HAD EXCELLENT CLARITY! The only two cons I see are the shakiness of the tripod while focusing or tracking (I'm sure this is common, As I mentioned earlier I've never stargazed through a telescope before). Lowering the tripod completely helps to alleviate some of this. My MAJOR complaint is that all the planets weren't aligned so I didn't have to wait to see them all. A telescope for the beginner.. I THINK NOT!! Use the Celestron powerseeker 127 and become a PRO! And B&H Photo has the BEST DEAL ANYWHERE with price AND added extras for the 127eq. YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!

The last time I touched a telescope was 25 years ago, so I was a bit reserved about buying the powerseeker. Thankfully, Celestron provides very useful information on how to use the product and the assembly was relatively painless. The first night I saw amazing images of the moon. However, trying to find anything else was a frustration. It is very difficult to correctly align the finderscope and it can easily move around if you touch it too much. Once you locate an object, trying to focus on it can be a challege.
I think some of the frustration will abate over time with more practice. If you have the extra cash to invest in a motorized or "go-to" scope (i.e. the NextStar by Celestron) I would suggest going that route instead.
The barlow lens is mediocre. If you try to connect it to a camera with a t-mount adapter, the scope could easily tip over. Focusing with the barlow or included 5mm lens was also very difficult. This wasn't unexpected as other telescope users have told me that included lenses typically are of poor quality. This is very true and you will need to invest in a higher quality barlow.
Terestrial viewing is ok. Low contrast and the "doughnut bokeh" (common in telephoto mirror lenses) will be just as bad with the PowerSeeker (it is afterall a telescope that uses a mirror).
Overall, this is a good value for the beginner, but beware you probably won't be viewing Jupiter's moons the first night. It will take some time and practice.
As stated before, if you have the money to invest in a motorized or "go-to" telescope, you will probably be more satisfied with the extra investment. If you don't mind manual operation, you can't find a better telescope value than this one.

As an amateur astronomer, a beginner. I require assistance in setting up and using this scope. I knew this from the beginning. Am joining a star gazer group for moral and technical help. I found out that my telescope is stronger than what most have now. Plus it's motor drive adaptable. This is what I wanted and it's exactly what I got. I'm happy. It will take a while for me to get the hang of this. A lot to learn to do properly.

      Good starter telescope

      By Steve M

      from Nashville TN

Comments about Celestron PowerSeeker 127 EQ 5"/127mm Reflector Telescope Kit:

This is a good telescope for starters who want good quality at a fair price. The instructions are a bit confusing and could use some better pictures, but ok. The quality of the telescope itself and hardware are quite good, especially for the price. The weakest piece of the package, as others have noted is the spotting scope. Overall well worth the money!

Calibrating the finder scope is exceedingly difficult. Some of the clamps could be a little tighter. It is nonetheless a good telescope and an outstanding value. I am new to astronomy, but had very little trouble tracking Jupiter and viewing its moons. I could even make out Jupiter's bands. I've also viewed the Orion Nebula.

This was a gift to my kids to get them excited about astronomy and science. On a clear night you can see the cloud bands of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn and the Moon is spectacular. Its many adjustments and settings mean young children will need a lot of guidance to operate it correctly, but that provides meaningful family time.

Comments about Celestron PowerSeeker 127 EQ 5"/127mm Reflector Telescope Kit:

I have had my powerseeker for 3 years now and have loved every minute of it. living in AZ i can view year round and in the 3 years of owning the telescope i have completed 5 astronomical league observing programs. if you truly take the time to understand this telescope you will fall in love with it potential. now with that being said there modifications needed.
              1) replace the view finder with anything else, i replaced mine with a red dot finder from a bb gun.
              2) take off the rear cell and place a 3 ring binder reinforcer in the absolute middle to assist with collimation
              3) while mirror is off place small springs over collimation screws to helps assist with collimation, trust me it helps.
4)learn how to collimate your telescope-plenty of web videos- i use a cheshire tool or laser
5)join a club or search internet to learn what you can see for me that was the astronomical league--a wealth of knowledge can be learned

once you truly understand your telescope you will be awwwed by what you see. I was so in aww that i bought a celestron 8se so i could push the magnification to 200+.

so in summary this is a good beginners telescope that i have recommended to 4 friends and they all love theirs. once a month during new moon we go to dark site and enjoy the heavens.

              happy stargazing

Comments about Celestron PowerSeeker 127 EQ 5"/127mm Reflector Telescope Kit:

I was considering spotting scopes because I didn't want to spend the money on a telescope. I thought this looked too good to be true. I would classify this as a good quality amateur scope. The focuser is so-so and the spotting scope is tricky to align, but the optics are superb. The five inch primary gets plenty of light and the included eyepieces provide a great range. Don't expect the Hubble, it's an amateur scope and you only paid about a hundred bucks. I would stick to the 20mm piece and the barlow for most purposes, the smaller eyepiece is a bit tricky for most and you need a REALLY accurate setup to enjoy it properly. The tripod and EQ mount are worth what you are paying. Also, the erect image 20mm is great for terrestrial viewing. I suggest keeping the tripod low and using a stool, it's more stable. Study the setup and other information carefully, especially if you are new to the EQ Mount and/or use of a telescope. If you are patient and take the time to know what you are doing and set up properly in the right area, you will really enjoy this telescope and count your money well spent.

Comments about Celestron PowerSeeker 127 EQ 5"/127mm Reflector Telescope Kit:

My daughter wanted simply: "a telescope I can see the craters on the moon with" for her 10th birthday. When we got it dialed in, she exclaimed… "Daddy, I can see the meteor that made the crater in the moon!"
I am very pleased with the purchase. I almost bought the same telescope from a local retailer for almost twice the price. Needless to say, I feel I received a great deal… and at the price, an excellent scope.

Comments about Celestron PowerSeeker 127 EQ 5"/127mm Reflector Telescope Kit:

Got this scope a day before I went on vaca. Very easy to setup, and use. First day I got to see Jupiter and could make out the grey band (didn't think I would with the light pollution). The moon looked awesome, my 10 year old son was amazed. While on vaca it was used a few times, but I didn't have a real stable place for it (balcony on the roof) We could still make out Jupiter but it was shaky from people walking.

This was also the first Eq mount I've ever used. Once I was able to get the spotter scope aimed it was easy to align it. The spotter scope it the only real weak point. It's plastic and doesn't hold aim very well.

All together I'm very happy with this scope and I hope to take my son to a star party.

previous reviewers obviously expected too much from a hundred dollar scope. it definately needs better eyepieces one low and one medium to high power for it to perform satisfactorily, but other than that it offers good planetary and very nice moon views. finder scope and focuser are standard for this price model. you can work with them or upgrade if your that picky

Use it general observing: planets, clusters, lunar.
The tube is great. I like the rigid secondary mounting.
The tripod is shaky. The eyepieces are sub-par. The focuser is rather loose.

Planets, Moon, Solar, open clusters, etc.
I like the extra rigid secondary mounting. Easy to assemble. Focusing is a pain. The rack is not as precise as on my old table top Cometron. Definitely, need better eye-pieces. The spotting scope is a joke; its plastic mounted in plastic so it bends.
