I purchased this to remove the head and install it on an old studio tripod that I have had for quite a while. After making a new plate for the tripod it all mounted together. I put a C5 Celestron on it for people to use when we have a star party. Had many people use it last Friday night and it was very easy to learn the adjustments to keep on track with Juipter.

We even used it with a 12mm eyepiece and still very stable. Great mount if you can keep it stable. With leg replacment it will handle a very heavy load nicely. I did mount the Canon 800mm L lens on it and it still was very useable. It weighs 11.5 pounds with the camera mounted.

Very useable for terestial viewing also, I took a few pictures of a pickup truck parked one mile away. Canon 800mm lens with 2x multiplier on it. no mirror vibration at all.

Bottom line, very good for the price but throw the legs away and replace them with something more stable.

Overall the quality of the mount is good.

It serves the purpose of a terrestrial mount better than an astronomical mount. The control knob for altitude is somewhat limited in range of movement. To view objects higher in the sky you must use a wrench (not supplied) to loosen a nut on the mount to move the head upward. Too bad that a large knob was not provided instead of a naked nut to make this adjustment.

I would recommend the mount for terrestrial viewing and would only recommend it with reservations for astronomical use.

Comments about Celestron Heavy-Duty Manual Alt-Azimuth Mount with Tripod:

The Celestron Heavy Duty Altazimuth Tripod is a durable, but not heavy, inexpensive, and easy to use spotting scope mount with lots of fine (MOA) controls It is NOT an astrological telescope mount: It lacks significant elevation control. I have used this product daily for over a month and it's stable, a little bulky, but overall transportable and easy to use with great fine tuning ability thanks to the screw adjustment controls. Great product for anyone doing wildlife or birding photography, or needing a spotting scope mount with significant control. Can be used for astrological telescope due to its stability and micro azimuth and elevation control so long as the subject isn't much above 20 degrees above the horizon.

This tripos is not a model that will be easy to move around, but is very sturdy and can handle the weight of a telescope or camera with ease. Note there were no directions in the box, but it was easy to assemble using the photos on the box.

I needed a stage for studio-shooting of small objects, with finely controllable tilt. It needed to be steady and bump-resistant. I can easily attach the devices I make for made-in-the-shade display of my subjects.Description should note, mounting is more for terristrial than astronomical, as the vertical tilt doesn't go to a very high/low angle. WOULD ALSO LIKE: a set of stubby handles, in case a short viewing instrument is attached.

I recently purchased a 127mm Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope which weights 8 1/2 pounds.I wanted a grab and go setup and this tripod/mount completed the perfect setup. I could not be happier. Within a few minutes I can be set up outside and having fun. The tripod is so simple to use. The slow-motion controls are smooth. The mount is very stable. With B&H fast service and free shipping I would not hesitate to this product again.

There are some shortcomings in this tripod that could be fixed with a little engineering, but not enough to make me send it back.

The tripod works great but had several broken parts when it arrived. The tripod was packaged perfectly, however, there were two broken plastic leg connectors to the tripod mount. They were both broken in the same place. It looks like a design error. Aluminum would work so much better. Instead of shipping back, I used contact cement and it is holding great. I am not using the tripod for binoculars. If I were, it would have gotten only one star. It is being used for a Vixen Polarie camera tracker. Once I have it set for Polaris, the vertical axis never has to be moved besides some fine adjustment. It handles the Polarie just perfectly and it is so much less expensive than other alternatives.

I am a newbie at telescopes. This one has worked well so far with my C5. It is solid and steady. I would, however, have liked an instruction manual.

Rapid adjustments are clumsy, but the fine adjustments work nicely. Once you are close, just turn the knobs.

The head is solid, and the legs are rigid considering the weight and price, but more damping would help. I am thinking about improving the damping by either filling the legs with foam, or replacing them with wood.

Perfect for stationary installation. I use it for Maritime Traffic observation. Tripod is too bulky for outdoor use.
