The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens from Canon is a telephoto prime lens and the first true macro lens of their EF-S series, made specifically for "APS-C" format Canon SLR cameras. It produces 1:1 magnification for extremely detailed close-up images and with a 35mm focal length equivalence of 96mm, it is also ideal for medium telephoto applications including portraiture. Its maximum aperture of f/2.8 is effective in low light and offers shallow depth of field control.

Autofocus is achieved with Canon's very best ring-type ultrasonic (USM) motor, which is fast and silent and allows you to manually override the focus at any time without switching the camera's focus mode settings. The field of focus is flat, important in macro work, and the aperture diaphragm is circular to allow more natural background highlights.

An internal focusing system prevents the lens' extension while focusing and a three-group floating element lens design results in excellent delineation at all focusing distances from life size macro to infinity. Canon's Super Spectra lens coatings suppress ghosting and flare and an optional lens hood (ET-67B) further reduces the incidence of flare.

A 1:1 magnification macro short telephoto lens for APS-C type, EF-S compatible Canon SLR cameras. Its 35mm focal length equivalence is 96mm.
Ultrasonic ring-type autofocus motor (USM) provides fast, smooth and silent autofocus action.
Full-time manual focus override enables precise manual focus at any time, even in AF mode. This is particularly useful when shooting macro for final critical focus.
Internal focus system does not extend lens barrel during focus and a three-element floating optical system results in excellent delineation at all focal lengths.
A minimum focus distance of 7.8" (20cm).
A truly circular aperture diaphragm for natural highlights and pleasing out-of-focus background.
Accepts both MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite and MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite.
Super Spectra special lens coatings minimize reflections, ghosting and flare.

I've been using this lens for a few weeks now and am impressed. This lens is very sharp and is reasonably fast. Image quality is great. Chromatic aberration is almost nonexistent with this lens even in very high contrast scenes (snowy mountain in direct sunlight contrasted by shade from large trees).
Autofocus is fast and accurate in most conditions with the exception of low light scenes - which I expected.
One thing I don't like is that the build quality feels inferior to my other primes (EF 85mm f/1.8 USM & EF 28mm f/1.8 USM).
However, it is a very compact, lightweight lens which makes it easy to carry.

I bought this lens because I wanted a lens for some occasional macro photos on some nature hikes. I was also considering the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM (as well as the L version).
This macro lens is perfect for me because I am not so interested in macro that I could justify getting the more expensive, bulkier lenses. I need to save the space in my camera bag for my other lenses that get used more.

If macro photography is your primary interest and can afford it, you are better off with the 100mm or 100mm L or the 180mm L Canon makes - all of which will allow more working distance and more diffused background blur.

If you only need macro sometimes and like to pack as little weight as possible, this lens is a great choice.

So I wanted a Macro Lens for my Canon 60D. The EF 100 Macro seemed like a good choice, but 160mm (considering the 1.6X crop factor) seemed too much. I was right (for my needs). The 60mm gives me good room to work AND surprisingly has a FANTASTIC bokeh for portraits. Beautifully shaped round highlights makes almost any portrait a masterpiece! The fast aperture gives you room to work with low ISO and adequate shutter speed. The downside of this great piece of glass is the slow autofocus (which one could expect given the greater range of focus).

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I bought this lens for product photography because of its sharpness (see the DxO website for comparisons). For the money it is a very sharp lens. The fixed focal length requires a little more setup, but is a good length for studio items up to about 18".

Being a EF-S lens, it is also small, but then it won't work with full frame cameras. Works well with the D70.

I did find that the autofocus doesn't always do the job, but mostly (90% of the time) it can autofocus even with only the modeling lights in a studio. The focusing issue seems less related to the amount of light than the particular length to subject.

Build quality is good. Although I haven't done much macro or landscape photography with this lens, it seems fine for that.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I use this lens when I do close up nature photography and it is just awesome. The pictures come out exactly like I picture them to be from a macro. The awesome part about this lens is that its not just a macro photography lens but can also be used as a portrait lens, so it is very versatile. It is quite a bit heavier than I had anticipated but that doesn't deter from how awesome it shoots. If you want a fairly low budget macro option for your Canon this lens is for you.

I used the EF-S 60mm Macro to take pictures of flowers at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. The lens worked very well and the pictures were sharp. I was using the camera hand held. I tried several different f stop settings and noticed some of the larger ones such as f2.8 to 3.5 seemed to give better results.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

Before purchasing this lens I scoured the reviews on many other Macro lenses here at BH. Narrowing it down to the Canon 60mm, 100mm, and 180mm. I really wanted to get sharp nature/butterfly photos that would reveal details that our eyes cannot see. I personally let my camera determine the exposure, Sorry!, and use the auto-focus. I also love to zoom to get my ideal shot. So since all the lenses are of high quality, I decided to get the 60mm. I feel that having every photo be a comparatively tight shot would not be the best first step into macro for me. Of course now I have been forced into the art of manual focusing. It is a lot of fun. Many of my photos are in focus at 100% magnification, (using a tripod, with a ball head, and 2 second delay). As a side note I think that the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens, and Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM Lens will not fit my Canon EOS Rebel XSi, but I was still considering them, and would need a second body.

I've only used the product for a couple of weeks, but first results meet/exceed my expectations. My interest is in close up shots of flowers and insects. I've learned: (1) the lens does a far better job than my 17-55mm f2.8 lens (as well it should), (2) DOF is very shallow, (3) and hand-held shots are a real challenge for the 4-15" range. I think my next purchase will be a tripod/monopod because some shots will have to be manual focus (near impossible for a hand-hold).

Using it as a prime lens for video also means precise image control. The Canon EF-S 60mm f2.8 is a great lens for copying & archiving old photos, shooting macro nature shots as well as for shooting portraits.

Purchased this lens for macro work. I already have the kit 135mm canon and Tamika 11-16mm wide angle lens for my Canon 70D. This lens looks like the perfect lens to keep on the camera unless you need a wide angle or zoom.
Ive used it so far for portraits and closeups on flowers. Took me a bit of time to get used to it as you need to either have a tripod or a steady hand to get the focus during macros spot on.
Color and detail on portraits are very nice and clear.
The lens seems well buit and its a Canon lens so no wories with quality as far as I can tell.
I do video work as well and intend to use this for HD video too as it focus is fast and quiet.

I take a lot of nature photos, and love to capture details that only macro can do. This lens does a great job and I've been enjoying using it!

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

I purchased this to replace my 100mm Canon 1:1 for Film SLRs (about 20 years old?). This to go with my not so state of the art but very functional Canon EOS xSi which I love. I take photos of fishing flies (lures) and guitar parts as well as complete instruments. So far I am LOVING this lens. The old 100mm was very fussy about focusing macro shots. This 60mm is NOT. I can "set it and forget it" if I need some quick, down and dirty shots for the web. Or for more detailed stuff, as long as I use the tripod, the auto is great or I can flip it to manual and position the depth of field exactly where I want it. At the price, totally worth it!

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

This lens is simple, and easy to use. Before I bought it I made sure to read the reviews, and some said that it was heavy and clunky, but I disagree. It's a great lens relative to it's price. It's a great starter macro.

I use the lens for underwater photography and I must say I wish this was the first lens I bought! it works great in my Ikelite UW houseing and 5502 flat port, and since it is only 60mm no zoom gear is needed (you can use the zoom gear for a manual focus if you are crafty). the auto focus is great however you will need a UW focusing light for sure.

I guess I would give this lens 5 stars if it had image stabilization, but then it would also cost a lot more. I bought this for my wife. I have had mine for about 5 years. It is great for up to 1:1 macro. The image quality is very good. It is small, easy to carry and inexpensive. It also makes a good portrait lens. Some photographers want a longer focal length macro so they have a longer working distance. I find the working distance to be acceptable and the shorter distance gives an unusual perspective to my macro images

I wish this lens fit on my 5D. I ended up selling it and really miss it. The resolution of this lens as a portrait lens on the APS bodies is fantastic. Near perfect depth of field. Colors just seem to jump out with the lens. For the price this is absolutely a must have lens.

Comments about Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens:

First off, let me say thank you to B & H and UPS. I ordered this lens on Dec 22 and received it on Dec 24, just in time for Christmas. I debated for many months between the Tamron 60mm f2.0, the Canon Compact Macro 50mm f2.5 and this lens. The deciding factor was the samples of pictures others have posted in their reviews. The quality of pictures seemed much better with this lens, and so far I have no complaints. It's a very quiet focusing lens and takes great up-close shots. The focus hunts a little in low light, but since I use manual focus anyway, this is not much of a problem. The second reason I decided on this lens over the 50mm is that I photograph mainly pets and landscape/flowers. I can get up close and personal with the detail and still use this lens as a portrait lens when needed. Overall, I am very happy and satisfied that I made the right choice.
