The Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is the first true macro lens of their EF-S series, made specifically for "APS-C" format Canon SLR cameras such as all cameras in the EOS Digital Rebel series, 20D/30D/40D/50D/60D and 7D.
This dynamic, compact, fast-focusing lens provides dramatic detail that goes beyond the human eye. Having an effective 35mm equivalent focal length of ~96mm, it produces 1:1 magnification for extremely detailed close-up images. It is also a very good portrait lens. Autofocusing is achieved with Canon's very best ring-type USM motor, which is fast and silent and allows you to manually override the focus at any time without needing to switch the camera's settings. The field of focus is flat, important in macro work, and the aperture diaphragm is circular to allow more natural background highlights.
Designed for digital photography, the EF-S 60mm Macro has specially shaped lens elements and inner focusing, with a floating element lens design to give good results in images taken at distances beyond the macro realm. It also has Canon's Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare from reflections off digital sensors. An optional lens hood (ET-67B) further reduces the incidence of flare.

I've been using this lens for a few weeks now and am impressed. This lens is very sharp and is reasonably fast. Image quality is great. Chromatic aberration is almost nonexistent with this lens even in very high contrast scenes (snowy mountain in direct sunlight contrasted by shade from large trees).
Autofocus is fast and accurate in most conditions with the exception of low light scenes - which I expected.
One thing I don't like is that the build quality feels inferior to my other primes (EF 85mm f/1.8 USM & EF 28mm f/1.8 USM).
However, it is a very compact, lightweight lens which makes it easy to carry.
I bought this lens because I wanted a lens for some occasional macro photos on some nature hikes. I was also considering the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM (as well as the L version).
This macro lens is perfect for me because I am not so interested in macro that I could justify getting the more expensive, bulkier lenses. I need to save the space in my camera bag for my other lenses that get used more.
If macro photography is your primary interest and can afford it, you are better off with the 100mm or 100mm L or the 180mm L Canon makes - all of which will allow more working distance and more diffused background blur.
If you only need macro sometimes and like to pack as little weight as possible, this lens is a great choice.

So I wanted a Macro Lens for my Canon 60D. The EF 100 Macro seemed like a good choice, but 160mm (considering the 1.6X crop factor) seemed too much. I was right (for my needs). The 60mm gives me good room to work AND surprisingly has a FANTASTIC bokeh for portraits. Beautifully shaped round highlights makes almost any portrait a masterpiece! The fast aperture gives you room to work with low ISO and adequate shutter speed. The downside of this great piece of glass is the slow autofocus (which one could expect given the greater range of focus).

I am still new to the world of DSLR, but so far I have been impressed with this lens. The only thing I don't like is the autofocus tends to hunt in low light. But I already knew this before buying the lens.

I had a macro lens back in my film camera days. Ever since my OM-1 and OM-2 died, I've been mourning the fact that I didn't have a close up lens anymore. When I saw this lens go on sale, I knew it was time. I just love this lens and the shots I've been able to capture! I've only had it for about a week, but am really enjoying getting these kinds of images again!

This is an excellent portrait lens aside from its main macro purpose. I borrowed my friend's canon 50mm 1.4 and was impressed how this macro stacks against a portrait lens. For extra $, you get not only amazing macro function but also pretty good portraits that are sharper than a razor. Great value overall. It also has nice smooth bokeh.

This is the sharpest, clearest lens I have ever shot much less owned. It beats my 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8. Just incredible! Works well for macro and portraits.

You'll never run out of things to shoot with macro and this lens is crispy sharp. I have only had it for a couple weeks and I'm finding my portfolio is filling at a faster rate then ever before. I'm looking forward to crawling through the woods for spring flowers, insects, mushrooms, etc.....

The first time I looked through my camera with this lens attached, I was amazed. Viewing tiny piles of snow clinging to branches on the trees, you see detail like never before. The images are so clear, and the bokeh looks fantastic. At an f/8, the depth of field is shallow and beautiful. Stop up to an f/2.8 however, and experience a sliver of focus that can create stunning images. This lens is essential for macro photography, yet it is also a superb portrait lens.

Nice prime macro lens. Very versatile. Can be used for 1:1 lifesize macro shots and quick portraits with nice bokeh when wide open. Small size but built nicely. Not stabilized, so keep that in mind when considering purchasing.

The lens works great. It is light weight and small, which makes carrying it easy. I use it for insect photography, along with photographing flowers and such. I have found out that it is difficult for the lens to capture a small subject while there is a busy background. However, this could be something I was doing wrong. Other than that, this lens is a good Macro lens to start out with. Also, it works best in lots of light.

This lens was purchased for my use in order to photograph a large collection of rare medals contained in the archive of the University of South Carolina. The lens is tack sharp and is a perfect match for my Canon 30D. I am glad I went for the 60mm over the 105 as I beleive that the latter would be much too long for my use.
I would recommend this product to anyone! An AWESOME LENS!

I love taking pictures of food and other things close up. This is a great lens to do such. The depth of field is great. One thing I really noticed about it was how sturdy it is compared to the kit lens I got with my camera.
One thing I don't like (and I had read this in the reviews, so it's not a surprise) is how long it takes to focus on the auto setting sometimes.

I got this lens after doing a little research, self education, and reading the other reviews. I'm an amateur photographer interested in the small details of nature, so as soon as I got this lens out of the box, I strapped into my 7D and focused on the closest bit of "nature" i had. Otherwise, i was impressed with how fast and quiet the auto focus was. This lens makes a great prime and does wonderful portraits.

I have struggled without a macro lens for decades, and I am a small product photographer! I finally decided to acquire a macro lens, and asked for your online help in choosing. The person I chatted with strongly suggested this lens, and he was right! This lens is simply phenomenal for small product shooting. The quality is so much better, that I can use these photos as is, instead of having to spend chunks of time in Photoshop. Thank you for referring me to this macro lens.
