Nikon 0 Diopter for FM3A, FM2, FM, FE2, FE & FA

You Pay: $21.95

Optional Nikon eyepiece diopters allow you to optimize your SLR viewfinder's sharpness in conjunction with your individual eyesight. Nikon SLR cameras (without built-in adjustable eyepiece correction) have a base diopter value of minus one. Minus one is considered the optimum starting point for the majority of SLR users with normal vision. The combination of the camera's viewfinder components and a clear (standard) eyepiece form a virtual image of a subject on the camera's focusing screen that is the approximate equivalent of a viewing distance of one meter.

Each Nikon eyepiece diopter incorporates a numerical value, represented by a minus value (nearsighted) or a plus value (farsighted) number, enabling you to select the appropriate diopter for your vision and your camera model.

The eyepiece's diopter value is, when combined with the viewfinders minus one value, the end-result value. No combination of the camera's base value of minus one and a given accessory diopter's value is required to arrive at the final desired value. In other words, if you require a diopter of plus 3, simply add a plus 3 diopter to your camera.

This has magnification to it, so don't make my mistake and think it's a replacement for the one that comes with the camera.

Also, it has a metal ring, so be careful if you are wearing any sort of eyeglasses (thinking sunglasses).

Comments about Nikon 0 Diopter for FM2/FE2/FA:

Older style cameras that do not have a built-in diopter require the physical removal of the existing eyepiece over the viewfinder and replacement with one of a different magnification to fit the user's vision.

I use them for my FM3A and F2.

You will also find them required for the new Fuji X-Pro1, Leica, and Voigtlander Bessa rangefinders. Fortunately, the Fuji and Voigtlander accepts this one.

              Unfortunately, these are becoming scarce.
Such is the way of film and its cameras :-(

By-the-way, choosing the right magnification can be confusing. The diopter that came with my FM3A (new) and F2 (used)--and, I believe with the Fuji X-Pro1--is "-1" So, I replaced them with "0" to give me a "+1" difference.

You might want to read the last paragraph again :-)

Comments about Nikon 0 Diopter for FM2/FE2/FA:

I brought this to replace the original piece on my FM2, which had broken around the lip.

It is what it is, a piece of glass surrounded by a metal casing. It holds the eyecup in place and protects the viewfinder glass.

There is no distortion while using it and no colour casting. So it's simple but useful.

Comments about Nikon 0 Diopter for FM2/FE2/FA:

There is a lot of confusion about which diopters will fit which camera. This works with any Nikon 35mm SLR with a threaded circular eyepiece except for the F3HP. The correction factor is the same with all of them. From the factory, and without diopter correction, they are all -1. I am using it on a Nikon F2 with no problems even though it is not listed as being compatible by B&H or by Nikon.

Comments about Nikon 0 Diopter for FM2/FE2/FA:

I screwed this 0 diopter into an FE2 I picked up recently, and I cannot say enough positive about it! First, the great stuff: 1) The glass is CLEAR as a bell! 2) The threads are perfectly suited to the threads on my FE2. How do they do it?? 3) The labeling is so easy to both read and understand: "Nikon Japan 0" no more, no less than the user needs to know 4) The color- Black. Black just goes with everything. Sure, something flashy might be nice, but will it stand the test of time like black will? Now, on to the not so great: As nice as the diopter is, I have yet to see a vast improvement on my images.
