I have used the Nikon ES-1 slide copier with both slides and negatives using the Nikon AFS MicroNikkor 60mm f2.8G ED. The ES-1 slide copier and this 60mm show an area of the slide film cardboard opening slightly smaller than a full frame image on my full frame FX Nikon D600. To adapt the 52mm ES-1 slide copier to the 62mm filter size of the 60mm MicroNikkor lens, I used a 62-52mm step down ring. I used the D600 with a SB-800 flash aimed at a blank wall...refrigerator...etc. or just the D600 aimed at a uniform illumination sunlit window (color tint results vary). As others have noted, remember to twist the ES-1 slide copier to get the vertical alignment correct, and try and clean dust off before shooting. I use Live-Vew most of the time with a remote shutter release, and autofocus generally works unless there is a dark slide. As you might expect, Kodachrome yields much sharper images than Ektachrome. I then use Photoshop and start with Image>Adjustments>Levels, then I try the auto correct options, then if there is a tint I try various strengths of photo-filter warm/cool, color balance, and finally shadows/highlights if you did not quite get the right exposure (you can even try in camera HDR if available), etc. And yes, you can copy negatives with a pretty simple technique using a cannibalized old cardboard slide mount. For negatives you need to enlarge the opening of the cardboard slide mount at the sides and top so as to see some of the blank orange areas around the image so you can grab that orange color with the Image>Adjustments>Levels white eyedropper to get rid of the color cast of the negative film base (in Levels, that is the right-hand eyedropper, just click on a blank orange area and suddenly you get rid of orange tint). In order to be able to see this extra blank orange area around a negative, I needed to push the Nikon ES-1 Slide holder out a little bit more distant from lens by using a several conversions rings (in my case, both a 52-58 and then a 58-52 in addition to the above noted 62-52mm conversion ring). After removing the orange tint in Levels, then go to Image>Adjustments>Invert to convert from Negative to Positive, then try the various Image>Adjustments mentioned above. An attached photo shows the negative is somewhat smaller than the total image with this setup as well as the orange area beyond the negative image itself resulting from enlarging the cardboard slide opening, and also the inverted resulting positive image.

I bought the adapter and a 60mm 2.8 lens for the purpose of converting a LOT of 35mm slides to digital images. Regardless that the instruction sheet that comes with the adapter says it will work with 55 or 60mm lens, the slides were not in focus because I didn't also get the extension tubes specified in the instruction sheet.

After ordering and adding the extension tubes the slides were in focus however the view of the slides was cropped and I couldn't see the entire slide. The inability to view and photograph ALL the slide is my disappointment.

Comments about Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter:

It is well made as you would expect from Nikon. I am using it on my Canon EOS 5D Mark III and a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. I made a extension tube out of a 2" PVC pipe. At one end of the PVC tube I glued an old 58mm filter so I could attach it to my lens and at the other end the slide copying adaptor fit perfectly and it works great.
My set-up is the same as one of the other reviewers.

Comments about Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter:

Using this with a Canon 6D and a 50mm Canon Macro lens but it does require an extension tube (using a 31mm Fotodiox ext tube) to focus. This is a great alternative to a slide scanner. I have a Plustek scanner which obtains greater definition and color but at a hugh cost. This ES-1 results in fast turnaround with each slide and $$ savings. If all you want is the conversion of slides to digitial for viewing and occasional printing to restore old memories, then try this first with an extension tube kit to insure focus.

Comments about Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter:

I used a Nikon D7000 DX body and the Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm 1:2.8G Macro lens. As other reviewers have mentioned, the ES-1 screws right onto that lens. I got a great view of the whole slide, plus a little more. The ES-1 offers the ability to zoom the tube in and out to get it just right. I had to user painters tape to secure the tube into place once I was happy. I also created little tape-based guides on each side of the slide opening to ease the insertion of the slide into the holder. I stretched the prongs a little to make insertion/extraction reqiure less force. It was a bit of a McGuyer strategy but worked over thousands of slides. I used an incandescent desk lamp for a light source. Quality was very good. I used the autofocus feature on each slide and checked periodically to make sure the results were consistent. I had to redo a few after viewing them on a PC. Overall, a good simple product. The macro lense makes it straightforward to use.

Comments about Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter:

I needed to find a way to create quality copies of 35mm slides more quickly than could be done using a film scanner. I use the ES-1 with my Nikon D200 and the Nikon DX 40mm AF-S Macro focus lens. My slide copying stand includes my my Nikon SB-800 speedlight and the SC-28 cable to connect the camera hot shoe to the flash. I also use the Nikon DR-6 right angle viewfinder attachment to make it easier to view the image. The set-up pictured ensures I have a process that produces consistent results. With a Nikon DX camera and the 40mm lens there is no need to use any extension tubes or adapter rings. The ES-1 screws right into the end of the lens. With the set-up I can copy about 90-100 slides per hour including the transfer to my PC and any post processing, such as cropping, that might be required. The 10MP D200 creates a jpeg file that is about 5MB. From this you can make a 300 dpi print up to 12 x 8.5 inches.

I purchased this adapter to copy slides and negatives using a Nikon D800E. I use a Micro Nikkor 60 mm f 2.8 lens and a Nikon BR-5 mount adapter ring. It works perfectly. Some people complain that the copy adapter rotates, I use a thick rubber band to hold it in place. Plus the rubber band allows some easy adjustment if needed. I now have a way to digitize all of my slides and negatives. B&H is awesome!

Comments about Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter:

Once you connect the right combination of rings, lens and the ES-1 it works well. It's designed for slide copy but it works fairly well with negative strips as well. I use the 55mm Micro-Nikkor but had to insert a BR-2 and BR-3 between the lens and D7100 camera body in order to get the correct distances for focus. No autofocus possible. It's quicker than the larger Nikon copy equipment, but not much quicker. If all you want is to copy slides, this will work well for you.

Great success using with my 105mm Micro-Nikkor 2.8 and D800 to copy my father's extensive collection of vintage family slides. A six-inch cardboard tube bridging the ES-1 to the lens, put in a slide, point to a window and daylight, and wah la, a perfect digital image. Downloading the pictures to my Mac Pro and i-photo and the possibilities are endless!

Comments about Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter:

I was lucky enough to already own the 40mm macro. This works near perfectly with this slide copier. You have the choice of a little cropping of the slide or go to the outside of the slide. Useing a crop sensor camera with a 52mm front opening, and as in my case a Nikon 7000 or a 5100 body connected to a nikon flash unit set on a table stand. The camera for automatic flash use, voila, one has a very quick and useful slide digititizer. I have already entered images into shows that I thought were lost forever. The only con: is with this kit you can not crop very much, but the importance of this is covered by shooting very low ISO and croping in post processing. This has been a very good addition to my kit, because I have many years of great shooting with slides and many great images I have totally forgotten about.

Using this in combination with a Macro/Micro lens is a fast way to copy slides. Using a digital DX format camera and the 40mm Micro lens gives the correct magnification without use of an extension set. The extension set is required when using the 60mm Micro.

This slide adapter works great if you have a full frame camera... if you have a crop sensor, you'll need to add a tube between the lens and adapter (which isn't available anywhere).

Comments about Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter:

I compared this slide copying adapter to a film scanner. At least for my setup scanning 35mm color slides, I am getting much better results with this adapter than the scanner.

I'm using a Nikon D7000 and a Nikon Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 lens. The lens is mounted directly on the camera and then connected to a Nikon BR-5 mount adapter ring (62mm to 52mm adapter), two K series extension tubes (K5 and K4, 52mm diam.), and finally to the ES-1 (which has 52mm threads). The extension tubes are necessary due to the crop sensor of the D7000.

I'm using live view focusing and shooting RAW, and I'm getting amazing results. I couldn't be happier. The images are better than with the film scanner, and the file size (even shooting RAW) is much smaller (about 20 MB vs. 50 MB for the scanned TIFFS). One big advantage of using this adapter with a DSLR is that you can control the exposure very easily, at least in comparison to the scanner that I used. Controlling exposure manually is important for copying underexposed slides.

If you already have the right camera and lens, this adapter is a very good and economical way to copy old slides.

Transferred Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides to digital with my D7100 with a combination from a Nikon K extension set before remembering I had a PK 13 extension ring from long ago. Both work equally well and produce results equal to an expensive high resolution scan done previously. Still experimenting with light sources, florescent light box, window light and the white balance settings but over all it's a great instrument.

Using this item with the Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Macro, on a Nikon D800, and mounted using the BR-5 adapter ring, I'm able to almost effortlessly shoot slides for viewing on monitors.I use a light box for light, shoot tethered, in RAW, and process in Lightroom 5.I just hold the camera down to the light use auto focus and about an 8.0 stop.Shutter speed is mostly irrelevant. I get just a bit more than full frame Regarding copy quality, this seems to produce plenty of sharpness and detail for enjoying my old slides -- and I have thousands. When I see something that is really worthy, I put it aside for a real scan--one day.4 stars: only for the lack of locking screw in the swivel function. Well made.

You don't even need a tripod, because the image moves with the camera, genius ...

Comments about Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter:

I'm using this in combination with a 60mm macro lens on my Nikon D600. The adapter needs a reducer ring to bring the lens down from 62mm to 52mm of the adapter. I also have a 52mm UV filter with no glass acting as a spacer to give a little more leeway to focus.

Unlike other reviews I have read about this adapter, I have found it very solid and well built. It doesn't feel loose at all. Perhaps they have corrected that issue in newer productions.

I use it to scan negatives and slides, and with a custom negative holder, I am able to quickly scan entire rolls of film much faster and with far higher quality than with normal flatbed scanners.

The only thing preventing me from giving it 5 stars is that it is more built for slides than negatives. If they built it with negative strips in mind, or atleast had an option for some kind of holder (instead of me custom making one), it would be excellent. Otherwise I still recommend it for others looking to digitize their analogue photos.

It takes me about 2 mins. to dust the slide and get it into the slide copying adapter , I use a light box ( Fluorescent tube,Choose that in the menu on camera.) & get very good results. It is much faster than using a scanner .

Comments about Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter:

I ordered this from B&H because I could not find a dealer who stocked it in Canada.

I purchased the Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm 1:2.8G ED lens and a 62-52 reducing ring. No other extension tubes appeared to be necessary to copy slides 1:1 ratio. I applied some scotch tape to the extender part of the ES-1, once I got it adjusted, otherwise it is easy to knock it out of alignment.

I tried placing a flash out front by using an extension cable, but have since found that by pointing the camera to the outside and using auto white balance appears to give better results.

With the Nikon D7000, I also use Active D Lighting set on auto to reduce the contrast. This setting would not be effective using flash. However, these settings may not be advisable for photos other than normal daylight shots.

With some photos, some additional editing may be required. I shoot RAW then use PE-11 to edit and convert to jpg.

I did some experimenting with a dedicated slide scanner, but find this system gives faster and better results.

Comments about Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter:
