The Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG contains three tubes of different length - 12mm, 20mm, and 36mm - which can be used individually or in any combination to obtain the desired magnification. Actual magnification effect changes with each specific lens.
This DG Extension tube set has upgraded "Gate-Array IC" circuitry to work better with digital SLR's and some of the digital SLR lenses, like the Nikon DX (e.g. 17-55mm, 10.5mm) digital-only lenses.
Extension tubes are designed to enable a lens to focus closer than its normal set minimum focusing distance. Getting closer has the effect of magnifying your subject (making it appear larger in the viewfinder and in your pictures). They are exceptionally useful for macro photography, enabling you to convert almost any lens into a macro lens at a fraction of the cost while maintaining its original optical quality.
The extension tubes have no optics. They are mounted in between the camera body and lens to create more distance between the lens and film plane. By moving the lens farther away from the film or CCD sensor in the camera, the lens is forced to focus much closer than normal. The greater the length of the extension tube, the closer the lens can focus.
When using the camera's TTL metering system, no exposure compensation will be required (exposure compensation is required for handheld meters).

I bought these extension tubes for use with my Nikon D90 and Tokina 100 MM macro lens in hopes of capturing some super close- ups of insect eyes- and I have not been dissapointed! The tubes look great and are capable of producing great results. On the down- side, there is some play in the couplings but this has not affected performance. Also, when using all three tubes together, my Nikon struggles mightily to focus on the sweet spot. So if you use all three tubes with a true macro lens, plan on focusing manually. To me, however, the bottom line is results. These tubes are greatly enhancing my portfolio, and allowing me to make more sales. Tips; I shoot manually with my Nikon's ISO set at the lowest setting in order to reduce grain. Then I adjust my F- stop to control lighting. Always use flash and a flash diffuser. Always add lots of lighting whenever possible, and diffuse them as well- just use your imagination. The difference between a mediocre photographer and a great one is imagination or lack thereof. Also, plan on using a tripod or something to rest your camera on while shooting. To give you some idea as to the magnification these tubes achieve, the spider in this image is only 6 MM in length.

The extension tubes worked at allowing my lens to focus at short distances for macro shots, but the build quality was poor. The cheap plastic parts rattled around (when not on the camera), and, while the autofocusing worked through the lens, it was very clunky. I would recommend skipping this purchase and putting the money toward buying a macro lens.

I'm just getting started with macro photography and these extension tubes make a great complement to the Nikon G lenses I have. They work effortlessly. I see no degradation of images wen using them and the metering system just works. Good introduction to the world of macro.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG for Nikon Lens:
Numerous photog friends of mine do great Macro work and, interestingly, they all crow about using these handy, inexpensive Kenko extension tubes to perfect the image output from their various macro and non-macro lenses. The purchase of these tubes will peak your interest in macro-photography, as you can use them with most of your existing lenses. So far, I've shot both my Nikon 50mm 1.4 prime and my AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm 3.5-5.6G zoom @ 300mm on my D600, using mostly all three tubes at once. The end results are outstanding. These tubes are a great precursor for any further steps you might explore to get seriously into macro-photography.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG for Nikon Lens:
On close inspection its a clever design, how they can stack with each other and still maintain a 'worm drive focus' connection between each other, the camera and the lens.
The thin one has such a small light loss that its not worth mentioning. The middle sized one has -.6 stops of light loss and the largest of the 3 has 1 full stop of light loss, stack them all and you get a combined light loss.
The 'loose clicking' is in the aperture control arm and needs to be such, so that they can rotate and stack together, allowing all the 'links of the chain' to come together and once they are mounted between camera/lens the rattle stops. Its a sort of 'floating system'.
When all 3 are stacked, attached to the camera and a nikon 70-200mm with nikon 1.4x teleconvertor attached, it starts to turn into a bendy nervous (me) rig. I would use that stack again, but it makes me double think every movement before I do it.
Use each individual one or the 2 smaller ones with confidence on a long0(ish) heavy lens. Use all 3 on that heavy (ish) lens at your Peril ;-)

Well, they're extension tubes and they do what they're supposed to do. On the plus side, the mounts are made of metal. The downside is that the rest of the tube is made from plastic. This item is more expensive that many competitors and when paying a premium you expect better materials.

These tubes fix into D7000 very easily and smoothly. Lenses on top of these tubes just slide and is very easy to fix. Well made. Robust construction. I initially thought of the tubes are having problem by listening to rattle sound. But i understand from the forums that it is normal. Recommended.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG for Nikon Lens:
Request from B&H for this review may come a bit early, usually I would give it a use period before making a more or less final assessment. So far though no complaints whatsoever with this set of tubes, they do what they are built to do, and good, autofocus works as best under the close up conditions, more challenging for the system than anything farther than a foot away, construction looks and feels good, although one expects cast metal bodies rather than plastic in this range of price, we'll see how it stands the test of time. From much former experience I would think that consistent careful and knowledgeable handling would entail extended satisfactory ownership. As far as optical performance I wish I could compare theirs, applied to the 24-120 zoom that I own and a Nikon D800, to that of an actual macro lens. As such I am very well impressed with pictures' quality.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG for Nikon Lens:
Recently purchased this set. Overall I have found this is a good set for what it is. I used the 20mm with Nikon 50mm f1.8 and had fun shooting some flower close-ups. Compared to my Nikon 200mm f4 micro, this combination can be handheld easily. DOF is super thin, which is expected. I can foresee that I will often keep the set handy in my bag because it is very light. And this can also be used with lenses of several focal lengths. I consider this is a good buy for times that I don't want to bring the heavy 200mm macro and the tripod.

I use thes for macro photography. They are simple and straight forward to use and function as advertised. The only drawback is theirf electronic connections. I was receiving an error code on my camera and ultimately discovered a slight wiggle between my 105mm and the extension tube. a slight twist corrected the problem.

Comments about Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG for Nikon Lens:
I decided on the auto extension tubes from Kenko to decrease the minimum focusing distance on my first generation autofocus Nikon 300mm f/2.8 - I love the out of focus appearance on this lens but the 3 metre minimum focusing distance limits it use. I would have preferred to go for ones made by Nikon, but the Nikon versions are straight tubes without any electronic connection enabling auto exposure settings. Furthermore, I wasn't sure how much extension I would need and buying a number of the Nikon tubes would rapidly have become more expensive that the Kenko set.
Although I have only used them a little so far, I already see their usefulness. I have also used them on my 105mm micro lens.
One concern cropped up with the 300mm lens and all 3 extension tubes joined together. There is some flex between the tubes and it is enough to disengage the aperture linking mechanism, resulting in a FEE error on the camera. Once I saw what the problem was I was more careful about limiting the potential flex between them by supporting the combination and it didn't happen again.

Despite the other reviews, I find the extension tubes to be fairly well constructed and attach firmly and securly. The tubes are also fairly well made. The extension tubes do precisely what they are intended to do, i.e., let you use a non-macro lens for macro purposes. That said, that technique is not that easy to learn. Using non-macro lenses for macro application takes a little getting used to, but it works.
