Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Nikon HR-1 Lens Hood:
Used on my Nikkor 50 mm. Does the job, protects the lense well and folds back nicely.

Comments about Nikon HR-1 Lens Hood:
As a 52mm screw-in, this fits the Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II "nifty fifty" lens perfectly. Also, you can clip the lens cap directly onto the hood itself. I thought the Canon hood looked too complicated for such a simple lens, and thought a rubber hood would work better. This one by Nikon looked to me to be much better quality than the cheaper no-names, and for not much more.

Comments about Nikon HR-1 Lens Hood:
I use this hood mostly to add an extra buffer between the glass and the elements when I carry my camera in the city without a lens cap. It helps greatly when negotiating crowds in the city or bumping doors and walls when moving around fast.
It causes vignetting at wide angles, but is very easy to fold back - shoot - and fold out for carry.
The rubber is soft and strong at the same time and protects adequately while easy to manipulate

For Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 ais lens. Folds back so you can put camera back in case.

Comments about Nikon HR-1 Lens Hood:
I got this hood for my 50-200mm Nikon lens, and it works great. It folds up very nice, and extends easily. Protection is a great asset, as well as the (obvious) benefit of shielding the sun. This hood is better than others I have bought.

Comments about Nikon HR-1 Lens Hood:
This is a really nice rubber hood. It is a little heavyer than the B&H and quite a bit heavyier than the General Brand. Not quite as Heavy duty as the Hama 24-210 62mm. It is more expensive than the others but the quality is there. Has front threads for a filter and will hold a center pinch cap while extended. Side pinch Nikon OEM cap will fit without the protrusions touching side of hood.

Comments about Nikon HR-1 Lens Hood:
This rubber hood is just great because it retracts so it doesn't occupy space in your bag.

Folds flat. Much better than the metal hoods and faster to use.
