Product Highlights

  • Extreme Close Focusing Capacity

The Pentax 6.5x21 Papilio Binocular is a special star all by its lonesome, and should prove to be a popular addition to the Pentax collection of binoculars.

Papilio is the Latin word for butterfly, and this binocular is an ideal companion for observing insects, museum artifacts and(of course) butterflies at incredibly close range.  The close focusing capacity of a binocular is in some measure quite limited by the position of the objective lenses themselves, but this particular Pentax has a unique Convergent Lens Optical System which brings the objective lenses closer as the focusing dial is adjusted to shorter distances.  Thus the left and right fields of view are once again aligned, and the end result of all this is that you can have razor-sharp observing at just 1.6' (0.5 m)!  Take them to the zoo and enjoy the stark realities of the reptile house like never before.  Be fascinated by intricate details of a skittish species at your local aquarium.  And, of course, it is a great binocular at more conventional focusing range as well.

Sharing much of the design elements of the other "reverse porro" binoculars from Pentax, this unit has the family trait of a dual-axis interpupillary adjustment mechanism.  Moving one barrel cause the other to move as well, making for speedy adjustments, an eternally centered bridge and a more durable unit less likely to be misaligned from shocks.   The Pentaxes are also amongst the very rare compact porros to offer an integrated tripod socket and an optional tripod adapter, which is great with a monopod for long walks in the woods with the unit.

Well suited to travel, museums and sports/theatre events

Although my Bausch and Lomb Elites close-focus, I kept having to step back to see some butterflies. I decided to invest in the Papilio 6.5x21 after reading several reviews and I have made a great choice. The light weight is scarcely noticeable while biking to a nearby butterfly park. If a hawk comes into view, I can still watch it although obviously not as easily as with my B & Ls. [...] great price, great binoculars.

I just got a Pentax Papilio 6.5x21 delivered a few days ago, and am sending them back. The main problem for me is the stray light reflected back at my eyes whenever there is light coming from behind me (or even from the side). In cases where there is a lot of this light, it can interfere fairly significantly with the view. As I had been planning to use these bins primarily for butterflies and dragonflies on the sunny days when they are most active, I foresaw lots of stray light and accompanying frustration in my planned future with the bins.

They are very light and nicely compact, and the image quality, though a bit dim, is still very good for the price. And they focus extraordinarily close.

Comments about Pentax 6.5x21 Papilio Binocular:

I got these at the recommendation of a fellow artist to see facial details when painting in a group where I can't get close to the subject. They are perfect for the job. The only thing not great is that everyone loves them and wants to borrow them. I let them try and then tell them to go to B & H. Great price, fast shipping and reliable.

I am a naturalist and photographer. I bought these binoculars after reading about magnifying binoculars in Kate Marianchild's book Secret of the Oak Woodlands. These bring plants and insects and all wildlife right up close in sharp focus. They are also good for distance viewing. The optics are excellent for the price.

My wife has some vision issues and I bought this for her use in museums when she can't get close enough to scan paintings or sculptures. You don't need high power in such situations and this 6.5x binocular was ideal. Excellent construction and bright, clean optics. Was amazed at the quality built in for the price.

Comments about Pentax 6.5x21 Papilio Binocular:

Most people might use binoculars to see something that is far away, but for an artist, seeing minute details on something that's just a few feet away can be a problem. The Pentax Papilio Binocular completely solves this problem, allowing a crystal-clear MAGNIFIED view of an object that's sitting on the table in front of you. I haven't tried using them to see anything far away, but if you have the same unusual need as I do, I recommend this unit highly.

...first off: I trust Pentax......very nice...does a great job of magnifying birds at my feeder, giving me a different perspective on faces and feathers...it's not a microscope vision, but a practical enlarged vision...and it is more than adequate at infinity......easily hand held (even for my grandson), "armored", adjusts smoothly, functions well with my eyeglasses...price is reasonable...

Comments about Pentax 6.5x21 Papilio Binocular:

This is one of those "Why didn't someone think of this before?" products. The clever design is a perfect product for the nature lover to carry along almost anywhere. Small, light, compact, and sharp, it makes observing details of a flower less than two feet away or zeroing in to identify the marking on a small bird 10 yards distant amazingly simple.

If there is a caveat, it is one inherent to all very compact binoculars, quickly and accurately adjusting the distance between your eyes. It would be a great addition to be able to lock in the setting once it is achieved.

The included adjustable strap has a safe and quick to un-attach clasp, attachable cover for eyepieces, and the fitted leather case completes the package.

I carry mine always at the ready in my automobile and/or with me everywhere I go.

One last thing-- the price is so reasonable that it's a MUST HAVE for anyone who enjoys exploring the natural world.

Comments about Pentax 6.5x21 Papilio Binocular:

Low magnification, wide FOV, and exceptional close focusing make these like a portable, long-range microscope. Aside from their intended use for viewing insects, they are useful in a museum for picking up details on small objects within a glass case. I was very glad to have them in the Irish National Museum (Dublin) for viewing some of the extraordinary metalwork from the Celtic-early Christian era, such as the Cup of Armagh, the Tara Brooch, and the Cross of Cong. However, my original Papilios were done in by a canoe trip. We were overturned, the binoculars were drenched, and it was impossible to clean residue from the interior lens surfaces. A purchased a new pair a week later. A waterproof version would move these to 5 star.

These 6.5x21 Papilios has to be one of the best in the 21mm class of binoculars. Extremely sharp in the sweetspot and they focus to under 20"! Nice work Pentax.

Comments about Pentax 6.5x21 Papilio Binocular:

These are the most amazing binoculars to come out for insect watching!! This is the sole reason my husband gave them to me, as I am an entomologist. What great detail you can see! They are small and easy to carry and use, and best of all is the price for what you get. This way I can watch insects without disturbing them from getting too close. I don't know of any things that aren't great about it, except that it might not be good for other uses such as looking at very far away objects but I'm not sure since that isn't how I use it.

I use this product when I am riding my bicycle. They are small enough to carry in my bike bag and easily taken out to view whatever comes across my path-easily take out to view close or far object with great detail. Great little set of binoculars!

Comments about Pentax 6.5x21 Papilio Binocular:

I've tried it rather briefly so far, but am impressed.
I intend to use it for more insect study when the weather is just a bit cooler.
Still items like plants and pictures can be studied closely in depth.
                              The close focus is great.
I haven't discovered any flaws yet.
My other binoculars are much better for birds and theater.
