I already have two Sony VCT-870RM tripods. They have a handle at the top which allows you to crank the head/camcorder up another 12" to a total height of about 6'. When fully extended the camera can sway.I bought the VCT-1170RM for more stability. It comes in a GREAT black padded soft case. When all three legs are fully extended, the head/camcorder is about 5'8" tall. There is NO crank mechanism to raise the head any higher. I missed that fact when looking at the photo. Yes, the camcorder is much more stable. It looks very professional. I just wish it would raise higher. The VCT-870RM has one remote control. The VCT-1170RM has the same controls AND the handle can be turned over (so it points UP instead of DOWN) so you discover there is another set of Zoom and Record buttons on the end of the handle. I'm not sure I will ever use it in that position, but it's nice to have additional options. The remote has a wire with an LANC plug which connects into many (not all) Sony camcorders. The remote is worth its weight in gold. You can zoom in/out and pan/tilt at the same time -- smoother than anything you can do just using the camera's zoom. If you want to look like a pro -- you MUST have this type of remote. You can turn the camcorder ON/OFF, Zoom, and take Photos with remotes buttons/lever.Both tripods have similar attachments for the camcorder. They screw into the camcorder's base plate, then snap into the head. You need to press the LOCK lever to prevent accidental release. The VCT-1170RN is well made from aluminum. With care, it will last a long time.In both tripods I have not found anyway to re-balance the camcorder if I load a wireless audio receiver or shoe lights. The camera is then very front heavy. You need to keep the tilt knob tighter to prevent camcorder "flop" (pointing to ground unintentionally). The VCT-870RM is out of production, but you can still buy them on-line for about $120. Depending on your use, that's a better deal. If the height issue is not a problem, and you want something more stable, which looks more professional, then the $320+ for the VCT-1170RM is the way to go.[...]

Recently i purchased the VCT-1170RM tripod for my Sony HD camcorder. Overall the tripod is sturdy and solid. As an entry level prosumer tripod it is a great buy for the money. There are better ones out there but the connectivity for the Sony brand is really great. Overall i would recommend this tripod for anyone with a matching Sony camcorder.

The cable for remote controll is A/V (A/V R). For a lot of cameras from Sony you need a convert cable from A/V to LANC. Product: VariZoom VAVZAVLANC.

I use the VCT-1170RM Tripod for special events and weddings and I have been happy with over-all quality of materials. The tilt and span movement is extremely smooth and steady. Its a little on the heavy side but I feel this is from the materials used. Less plastic than the wannabe's.......

This is a smooth and stable set-up at a good price. If using with a Z5U, an adapter cable is required for the LANC. Also, the LANC cable must be plugged in before the Z5U is powered up. If not, the Z5U will not function.

I am a wedding videographer who has went through several cheaper tripods before buying two of these. I have Sony FX7 cameras which securely attach to the tripod bases. That is good peace of mind in it's self. After returning the not so smooth Sony attachable remotes I was amazed at the remote capability Sony displays with these tripods. The smooth movement and function is exceptionable. What a BIG difference in my work. The weight is just right and the set up is quick. My only complaint is you can't raise the camera base up off the legs which makes it ackward to change the height quickly. Over all I am very satisfied with my purchase and feel it was money well invested.

This tripod is easy to set up and seems fairly stable. Still waiting for the HDR-AX2000 to come back in stock, so have not been able to completely use this product as of now. Pan and Tilt seem to work good and includes a built in level. Folds compactly and includes carying case. Remote on arm was not secure at first, but realized twisting lock was not secured all the way. Once tightened further, there was no problem. All-in-all seems like a great product for the price.

Comments about Sony VCT-1170RM Tripod with Two-Way Head and Remote:

As an owner of a small video production company, having a tripod that is light weight, quick to set up, stable and doesn't break the bank, was pivotal in my decision to purchase this tripod. Sony has hit the mark with this well built and reasonably priced tripod. Sony,s addition of the remote control sets this tripod appart from all others. On the "con" side, the voom control is backwards. You push the control foreward to zoom out and push the control backwards to zoom in. For someone who has been in the business for twenty five years, this is a diffficult adjustment to make. One other thing, on a very smooth surface, such as wood and marble, the tripod has a tendency to slide. But, all things considered, I would still give it five stars!

Comments about Sony VCT-1170RM Tripod with Two-Way Head and Remote:

I've actually purchased two tripods for video at price points from $100 - $200 and was extremely disappointed in both. Then I jumped up to the Sony VCT-1170RM. This is a video tripod that pans and zooms smoothly and slowly without jerking.

The only thing that would make this a 5 star tripod, for me, is if I could adjust up to the height of at least 84".

Used today for the first time - worked like a charm. I film mostly sports, but this would work for any filming. I had the earlier version and this is definitely an upgrade! Much more stable and the head moves much more fluidly.

Comments about Sony VCT-1170RM Tripod with Two-Way Head and Remote:

For one price you get a reasonable quality tripod and remote control.

Tripod seemed stable and the fluid drag head provided smooth pans.

Remote control on the handle allows control of record, zoom, etc without touching the camera. It's easier having the controls to hand and avoids jogging the camera.

I had trouble finding the compatability of the remote on the Sony Web site before I bought it but it turns out that has a LANC jack connector meaning it is really intended for larger pro-cameras, not the smaller consumer and pro-consumer cameras which, if they have a remote facility, will use the multi-pin AV adapter. You could get an adapter.

Since it is clearly meant for larger pro-cameras the only drawback is the attachment plate for the camera. Unlike other professional video heads this is not a metal slide-in plate, but a plastic plate that drops in and is locked down at one end, more like a typical stills head. This seemed reasonably stable with a very small consumer camera but I haven't tried it with a large pro-camera. I think this will be okay for the new smaller Canons but would be cautious about using it even with the smaller pro-cameras like the Canon XH-A1 or the Sony Z5.

I love that I can control my Sony HVR-FX7 camera with the controls that come with this tripod. It gives my work a studio feel and I can focus and frame my shots more efficiently.

Comments about Sony VCT-1170RM Tripod with Two-Way Head and Remote:

I'm a wedding videographer and I own a lot of tripods and monopods, priced from relatively cheap that you could purchase from the local box store to pricey. They come from many manufacturers including Manfrotto and Sony. But this is finally the tripod that does what I need. The problem of course with the cheap models is just that; cheap construction. But they are fine for just holding a camera in place when I don't need to pan or tilt. My expensive tripods are great but tend to be quite heavy. But this tripod has the features I need: LANC to control my Sony brand cameras remotely, fluid head, lightweight but not flimsy and it keep my camera in balance even when I let go of the tripod handle. Wish I had found this one first and then I wouldn't have so many tripods in my closet. It even comes with a padded carrying case. This is just right for my wedding business! Additional info: the remote works perfect with my Sony Camcorders (DVR VX2100, PD170, and HVR Z5U). If you have one of these models, it does work with them.
