Comments about AV Toolbox AVT-3190 Scan Converter:

Some perspective: I purchased the AVT-3190 to split an HD signal from a gaming console to output HD to a tv and convert the other split to SD for recording purposes.

The good: The HD pass-thru is pretty decent, and the HD signal output does not seem to have any delay and very little degradation.

The bad: The 4:3 converted signal from the gaming console was not as good as I was expecting. Text is difficult to read, the picture is pretty soft/fuzzy, and it becomes very contrasty. I tried upgrading to better, shorter cables, as well as tried outputting vga vs. component from the game console, but it still did not improve. S-video out had strange scan lines throughout the picture, though was crisper than RCAs.

I returned this unit, as it was unacceptable for the intended use.

Comments about AV Toolbox AVT-3190 Scan Converter:

The AVT-3190 does a good job converting images and text (when text is part of an image).

It doesn't do so well with text, but I understand that is normal for scan converters. For example, when you hook up a laptop and the names of the program icons look blury.

Recently I "camcorded" a presentation that was being displayed by a laptop projector. The images looked good, but the embedded video "pulsed" & looked awful. Later, when I ran the video through this converter, the video came out looking very good. That is one reason to get this converter.

The best thing about this device is you can hook a computer/laptop to almost any
vcr/dvd/dvdr/dvr/tv/stereo & etc. It has rca out, s-video out, component out, and computer video passthrough.
