Product Highlights
  • Wireless Remote Shutter Release
  • Minimizes Vibrations
  • Good for Close-ups & Time Exposures

The Nikon ML-3 (10 Pins System) Modulite Remote Control Set is for use with Nikon cameras: N90, N90S, F100, F5, F6, D1, D2 & D3 Series, D4, D100 with MB-D100, D200, D300, D700 and D800. It enables remote control for two separate channels via an infrared LED beam, providing automatic camera operation from a distance of up to about 26-feet (8 m). Auto triggering, delayed shutter release, single and continuous shooting are possible. It can also fire the camera remotely when a subject moves between the transmitter and receiver, for surveillance or wildlife photography.

The ML-3 is designed so the transmission button operates the same way as the shutter release button of the camera. Lightly pressing on the transmission button turns on the camera's exposure meter and starts autofocus detection.

To connect the ML-3, the receiver is inserted and locked into a camera's or Speedlight bracket's accessory or hot shoe and is then connected to the remote terminal on the camera with its remote cord. The camera is fired when the transmitter is pointed in the direction of the receiver's sensor and the transmit button is pushed. Recommended camera settings are: C or M focus modes, Programmed Auto (P/Ps), Aperture-Priority Auto or Shutter-Priority Auto, L or H film advance modes.

This has several modes, including single, continuous, delayed single (timer) and motion activated.
The delayed mode is great for taking self or group photos, but unlike the self portrait there’s no racing to get into position. One can activate the remote then hide it and the photo is taken about 3 seconds later, with the LED indicating the ready. Just like the shutter on the camera, pressing the remote lightly activates the auto-focus. The remote can also change from single to continuous (be sure to set the camera for continuous) to delay. The delay mode only takes single shots.
The trigger mode sets up an IR beam between the remote (which can be tripod mounted) and the camera. When the beam is broken the camera will wither take one shot or continuous pending on the setting on the remote. There are 2 channels so you can have 2 cameras that can be activated independently. The receiver can be rotated 360 degrees so the user can be next to or behind the camera but not have to worry about reaching the end of a cable. I’ve used the remote at over 40 feet but you must have the IR receiver facing you (the remote) and ambient light shining into the receiver limits its range. The remote is NOT brighter than the sun and has a fairly narrow beam spread…
If you want to use a flash (including the built-in) get a flash bracket as this mounts on the hot shoe.

This worked as described, with the problems mentioned in other reviews. The main problem for me is that it takes up the hot shoe, so taking pictures with a flash (even the pop-up flash of my D700) causes a problem. If the ML-3 would have included the bracket to attach to the camera I would have given it more stars, for the price that should have been doable. Another missing feature is the ability to lock the shutter for longer exposures (greater than 30 seconds). For that, you will still need something like the MC-30. As others have pointed out, one has to aim the remote very precisely. Overall, a pricey piece of equipment that is not really well designed - something I can't say about any other Nikon piece of equipment I own.

Comments about Nikon ML-3 Modulite Remote Control Set for "10-Pin" Remote Socket Cameras:

I bought it for my family & children´s studio but I haven´t been able to use not even in one studio session, it works with infrared (they should say in the name of the product), and as you can imagine you are never in the right place to trigger the camara.
Not reliable, sometimes it doesn´t trigger the camara even when you are pointing directly to the infrared.

Sturdy construction and I'm pleased the receiver draws power via the 10 pin connection rather than yet another battery. Could be smaller. Channel switch easily changed by accident, but easily fixed with a tiny strip of gaffers tape.

Comments about Nikon ML-3 Modulite Remote Control Set for "10-Pin" Remote Socket Cameras:

Another clever design by Nikon and it works as advertised. I normally use a cable release when shooting with a tripod but sometimes that is not practical with wildlife/nature photography. The angle of reception between the transmitter and the receiver is narrow (10-11 degrees) so consider that before you buy. It will take some time getting used to this so there's no substitute for practice with this before a photo shoot. There is a separate bracket available for the receiver for situations where the hot shoe is in use.

Taking photos of wildlife is tough. With this control I can set up the camera in one location, closer to the subject while I am back out of sight. No wires to run or get tangled. It is also handy for taking photos while coaxing a subject. It is light weight appears well made and not expensive.

I just used this remote for a family photo and it worked like a charm. The hand held remote was easy to point at the camera attached sensor and the camera focused and fired just as I wanted it to. I would highly recommend it as a much needed accessory. I also used the optional extension bracket which attaches to the camera tripod mount. It holds the sensor and frees up the hot shoe for the flash. I wouldn't be without it now that I have used it.

Comments about Nikon ML-3 Modulite Remote Control Set for "10-Pin" Remote Socket Cameras:

I bought this out of frustration because I wasn't happy with either the durability or reliability of the MB-12 trigger shutter remote. Two of them had failed due to exposed wires and the third had an internatl failure while I was in the middle of a shoot halfway across the country from my home. That was it. I bit the bullet and upgraded to the ML-3. I've only used it once but it has performed as advertised. Some people have criticized its direct line-of-sight infrared aiming, but you should understand that the receiver head pivots, so you can line the transmitter up with it easily no matter where you're standing.

Comments about Nikon ML-3 Modulite Remote Control Set for "10-Pin" Remote Socket Cameras:

I purchased this just before my visit to Yellowstone hoping that I can keep my hands inside my pocket and trigger the camera. Unfortunately it is a "line of site trigger" and therefore often I still had to take my hand out of the pocket to use it. Other than that problem, it works well if you are able to aim it diretly at the receiver.

I am using it for self portrait and group portraits with friends. It costs around 440 US$ in Switzerland, so price at B&H is real bargain.

The remote works great so long as there is a good line of sight. I spent way to much time repositioning the sensor or going through extreme bodily gyrations while doing a self portrait in a lecture hall on campus. In addition, it seemed to have a relatively short range (about 20 feet). A remote that uses radio frequencies would have been much better as line of sight is not required. I purchased one by vello at a fraction of the cost and hope that it will work well. Unfortunately, I have not been able to test it as it arrived with a dead receiver battery.

Recently, I was in New Yersey looking at the New York skyline ready to take pano pictures. I took several pictures and inspected them on my LCD screen. I zoom in and realized that the windows and signs were blury. I knew that when I pressed the shutter button I made my camera shake enough to make this windows of the buildings and signs of the streets blurry. If I would have had this gadget that moment, I would not be writing this.

i bought the Nikon remote after owning the pearstone "freewave" wireless radio transmitter for few months. that started malfunctioning without any obvious misuse. i decided to just get the Nikon one hoping it would be more reliable. the main difference is the other one uses radio waves to control, so the remote doesn't need to be in direct line of sight of the receiver, where as the nikon one is infrared so the remote does need to "see" the receiver. however, the receiver is able to rotate on top of the hotshoe, so you can be in any direction around the camera.

Easy to use! It performs exactly how I expected it to. The only criticism (minor inconvenience) I have is, the carrying case is a little flimsy and odd shaped- makes it hard to find the perfect spot in my gear bag.
