The Rycote Undercover pads are a disposable mount and windshield used for mounting lavalier microphones underneath clothing. There are ten black, ten grey and ten white pads (30 total) supplied in each package. The pads are double coated with a peel-off adhesive and a soft-woven material. The adhesive is peeled onto clothing, providing a tacky mounting surface for lavalier microphones. The woven fabric disc is placed over the microphone and adhesive surface, sandwiching the microphone, and eliminating structure and rustling noise caused by movement of clothing, cables, etc.

Just wrapped on an educational production, shot in Flint, Michigan, a possible pilot for a tv series. We used students for almost all of the postions. Used "Undercovers" and "Overcovers" by Rycote and not only did the products work as advertised, they saved an incredible amount of time that might have been spent by the students trying to attach the mics and then finding the resultant clothing rustle. Great Simple Product, why didn't I invent these?

I shoot documentary film and thought these might save me some time, but it basically just compromised the interviews I used them for. They're very simple and easy enough to just use your own made from moleskin.
The adhesive came loose mid-interview on any kind of sweater, and any movement was still audible despite very careful placement. It's still cloth on cloth. to be useful it needs to be bigger so the mic is better enclosed.

These are amazing for hiding lav microphones on set. I've used them in doc/interview settings as well as in a narrative context and they are certainly a handy tool.

They do a great job of limiting clothing rustle although you still get a bit. My only wish was that they were a little more robust in terms of stickiness. At times they tend to come a bit loose. Usually when there i a bit more moisture on the subject.

I used this on a Countryman B3 in a windy beach environment and was pleased with the result. It helped that the actor had his back to the wind most of the time but both the wind noise and the clothing rustle were minimal.

These little wonders are the best thing to come from Rycote since the boom mic! The pads stick to even the hairiest of chests, and stay put. The felt covers not only hold the lav in place, but stop any annoying clothes noise, brilliant!

The only way to go if you're serious about your craft.

Great tool for hiding the microphone when shooting closeups of talent. Simply stick your lav mike to the tab, stick it to the inside of their clothing, and bingo...great mic presence with no microphone in sight.

Comments about Rycote Undercover - Lavalier Wind Cover:

As a live event videographer, these wind covers are perfect for making the lapel microphone as indiscreet as possible, allowing for no issues with photographers that otherwise may have an issue with a wire on the speaker's clothing.

They're cheap, easy to apply and virtually perfect for weddings, interviews and all other types of work involving lapel microphones.

No issues with degrading sound quality on my end, and in my opinion they remove a lot of the sounds of rubbing materials against the microphone when using the cloth overlays.

I bought this with high hopes of being able to conceal a small mic (matchstick mic, about the size of a countryman). After hearing numerous high-profile pros endorse these, I figured I was missing out on something amazing by not using these. I finally bought some, tested with decent results, then took them to the field and gave them a try, another try, a 3rd, and then a fourth try. or should I say fail. The first two times, the mic came out of the sticky and the sticky stayed on. It lasted about 10 minutes both times. The audio I did get had way more clothing noise than I like. The third time I went on the skin to the sternum. It held but the clothing noise and movement noise was unbearable. The fourth time I did direct to skin at the collar bone under a t-shirt. It worked amazingly well, for 25 minutes before detaching in the middle of the production. Sorry but save your money and go the gaff tape route. Watch some of the great youtube tutorials out there to gain some real knowledge on how to get great results with what's already in your kit before being sold on these, they're useless.

These are rad! I shoot a lot of weddings and promos and I hate a visible lav, these work great under a collar or under a tie. I also use medical tape to secure the cable in place to better the situation. The multi-color pads are handy.

My only con is that the pads could be a touch bigger. I have to stretch them out to fit over my Audio-Technica ATR-3350

These things works GREAT! They really help for making mics disappear and help with wind noise. I was shooting on the beach with 10-15 MPH winds and it was totally fine just barley under the clothing.

I would get the multi color pack too, I have used all three of the colors and it really helps.

I've used these for a few years now and they work great to eliminate clothing noise. Having different colors really helps too.

I use these under shirts. The stickies work great. They are very tacky and hold well. The fuzzy part attaches sandwiches the lav and sticks to the sticky. It held all day.

I situation is that I still hear movement from the skin/shirt. I've tried it with my Sonotrim lav facing the sticky and facing the soft fuzzy undercover. I had a better situation when I faced the Sonotrim lav towards the sticky and attached the fuzzy VERY loosely.

I think these are the best options out there, but I still hate giving my microphone to subjects/talent. I'd rather hold my microphone and be in control of my sound.

                                            Slight upgrade from Gaff tape.

This product is okay, I've always used gaff tape folded into a triangle to secure lav microphones and hoped this product would provide a better solution. Honestly very underwhelming, still picking up a far more shirt noise than I would like with this product. I do think some clients have preceded to attach this product instead of the gaff tape so perhaps for appearances it's worth keeping a pack around.
