Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital

B&H # SI3014DCCAF Mfr # 300101
No Longer Available

The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM is a large aperture lens that provides a standard angle most similar to the human eye. As a lens designed for use on APS-C sized cameras, the 30mm focal length translates to approximately 50mm in 35mm format(*)

A glass mold aspherical lens element at the rear group of the lens reduces color aberration and provides high-quality image results. From 15.7" (40 cm) minimum focusing distance to infinity, this lens creates very sharp images with high contrast, and can perform superbly in a great range of applications, including snapshots, portraiture, indoor shooting and landscape photography.

DC lenses are exclusively designed for APS-C digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on these digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to APS-C format digital SLR cameras.

Note! (*) Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or for any digital SLR camera with image sensor bigger than APS-C size, e.g. 1D series or Kodak Pro SLR/c.

EX lens series denotes excellence of engineering and new technology
Correction for various types of aberration provided by two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and a hybrid aspherical lenses

Using this on my Canon 7D, so it's close to 50mm normal.

    Cons first:
    - At anything faster than f/2.0 the lens has a soft fuzzy look to it. I think this is normal, but it's very strong at 1.4.
    - It's heavier than expected. Surprising actually. But it's built really tough.
    - The focus ring is a little too stiff for my taste, but it's useful when you're shooting video so that your rack focus isn't too jarring
    - Auto-Focus is SLOWWWWW. This has to me my biggest complaint. At a very narrow focus range, it's also hard to get the right thing in focus without using manual. But the fulltime manual override works well.
    - Chromatic Abberation (however you spell it) is BAD below f/2.2 - yes, you can fix this in photoshop, but its a pain. Price you pay for a super fast lens I guess...

    Pros:
    - Heavy duty build, just a little heavy.
    - Really sharp, crispy images starting at f/2.5, no distortion.
    - Lens hood is free, always use it
    - Great for video. Amazing images, out-of-focus is creamy looking. Bokeh looks nice too.

    Final Judgement:
Again, really gorgeous images when you have enough light and plenty of time to focus correctly. I was going to return it, but after using it for video, it proved very useful in low light - created really beautiful footage and smooth manual focusing. With video, you don't do much zooming anyway, so the fixed 30mm was a good trade-off for a superfast f/1.4.

This lens is overall great. fast, sharp focus, very sharp image overall. The only problem i noticed right away was a blue ghosting on high contrast objects, such as black and white text, or even outdoors where a light wall meets a darker colored background. This only occurs within the f/1.4-2.8 range. Sadly, i bought this lens specifically to use in that range. The ghost color is not particularly noticeable at 1:1 or less, but if you need to crop to a certain area, you'll be out of luck.

Also notable, is that in the f/1.4-2.8 range, objects are not as sharp as they would be in higher ranges. It almost has the effect of a very soft filter, even when in perfect focus.

Overall, a good, sturdily constructed lens. Fast and accurate AF, and great overall sharpness.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital:

When I first got this lens I was using a Canon T3i. There were major Front Focus issues as well as CA and I was going to return it. Before I returned it my new 7D arrived so I tried this lens with it, and WOW, what a difference. No more Focus issues and the CA has also been resolved. I am in Love with this lens. It has amazing Bokeh and my photos have a clarity they never had before. I would definitely purchase this again but would recommend it only if you don't use a Rebel. Not that anything is wrong with the Rebel series, it's just that this lens seemed to be better suited for a higher end camera. Can't wait to purchase my Mark III and see how great it is with it!

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital:

PROs: Wide angle F1.4 works wonders indoors. Good build quiality. Pleasing shallow DOF. Nice sharpness F2.2 and up. Nice hood/case.CONs: Unreliable autofocus in low light, especially tracking moving subjects (e.g., kids jumping off couch) and flat objects like focus charts. A bit soft at 1.4, but this doesn't matter unless you need to make prints larger than 8x10I'm not a pro photographer, so I can accept some missed shots. For me, getting this lens under $ is still worth it.

I wanted a "normal" focal length prime, and this was the lens closest to that 50mm length in my price range. I'm guessing the price drop on this was a way to clear stock in anticipation of the updated release from Sigma, but I'm just happy it did. this is an excellent price for this lens.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital:

I'm not a pro photographer by any means, but I do very much enjoy it as a hobby. I wanted to upgrade from my canon 50mm f/1.8 and this lens seemed to be a worthy successor, so I made the purchase. I have been thoroughly satisfied with this lens and the pictures it puts out. I know that it is not a "perfect" lens, but it has been doing a very good job for me.

I purchased this lens to take on our family vacation this past week. I wanted to have a faster lens for indoor and low light shots than what I currently owned but didn't want to break the bank account either. I was more than pleased with my indoor shots from this lens, as well as my outdoor night shots. I captured some great fireworks with it! Definitely happy that I purchased this one.

Pros: - Amazing build quality- Very sharp even at f/1.4. Don't listen to other reviewers, they have probably never used a prime lens wide open. - No front or back focussing issues like other reviewers have mentioned as well- great field of view- fast autofocus Cons:- Not many at all- has quite a bit of vignetting at f/1.4, but eases up around f/2. Nothing post processing can't fix- lens hood average build quality

I have been using this lens a lot the past two weeks since owning it. Its it awesome across the board, then again I am coming from a Canon kit lens. I find at 1.4 its great with macro shots and at 2.0 its sharp as a tack during. It's also a great low light lens, took some city scape shots the other night and was impressed with its quality.

I am relatively new to the SLR world and use mine primarily for photographing my 4 kids (0-6 yrs old).

The pictures I take with this lens are so sharp and the colors are so vivid I am amazed. I can take pictures in a relatively dark room and still have it turn out beautifully.

I haven't come across many dislikes yet (other than my 2-yr old being drawn to touch the lens everytime she sees it).

Bought this for my Canon body (XSi). Had a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens for about $100, this one costs three times as much. This one performs better in low light (not a suprise 1.4 vs. 1.8 f stop), however, the Canon has slightly better sharpness. This is a direct comparison of the two units I got, not saying it'll universally apply. Still a great lens. Much better build quality on the Sigma however.

I love this lens. I have always purchased Canon lenses. I was surprised at how wonderful the colors are and the bokeh is great.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital:

I've wanted a sharp, fast standard (for APS-C sensor)lens and Sigma delivered precisely that in their 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the lack of a DOF scale.

I love this lens. The image is sharp and the focus ring is smooth. The focal length is perfect, allowing you to move in for good close-ups or back up for medium shots.

Used with a Canon T4i for video production.

I'm in love with this lens. Was a little worried it wouldn't be as sharp but my results have been wonderful. Gives me so much more space to work with on my crop factor camera than my Canon 50mm.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital:

I love this lens! I use it for portrait and landscape photography. The lens gives great color and contrast photos. And is very sharp! Great build quality even with plastic feels tough. The focus ring on it is little stiffer than that of a canon lenses but that actually helpful when manually focusing. It's down side is that it's only for crop sensors.
