Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon Digital

B&H # SI3014DCNAF Mfr # 300306
No Longer Available

The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM is a large aperture lens that provides a standard angle most similar to the human eye. The 30mm focal length translates to approximately 50mm in 35mm format(*).

A glass mold aspherical lens element at the rear group of the lens reduces color aberration and provides high-quality image results. From 15.7" (40 cm) minimum focusing distance to infinity, this lens creates very sharp images with high contrast, and can perform superbly in a great range of applications, including snapshots, portraiture, indoor shooting and landscape photography.

DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.

Note! Not compatible with 35mm cameras or digital cameras using full-size image sensors (e.g. Kodak DCS14n or DCS PRO SLR/n).

EX lens series denotes excellence of engineering and new technology
Correction for various types of aberration provided by two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and a hybrid aspherical lenses
Equipped with the silent, responsive and high speed Hyper Sonic Motor and provides fulltime manual focus override

I purchased this lens online after reading several reviews. With front focus problems being so prevelant, I knew I may need to send it back to Sigma for adjustment once it arrived. Yep! When shooting an object at 4' the lens focused about 2" in front, just enough to make the subject appear soft. Sent it to Sigma for warranty repair the next day and had it back in about two weeks... excellent service, front focus problem corrected. It's a stout piece of glass that balances quite well on my Nikon D40 & D40x. I recently shot a high school basketball tourney in a dimly-lit gym (with dark brown walls inside!!!) using this lens and my D40x. At f/1.6 - 1.8, 1/500 second and ISO 1600 the images were well exposed, sharp and could be significantly cropped. The lens' clarity/resolution meets and probably exceeds the resolution of the camera's 10.2MP sensor. If you purchase this lens (online) be prepared (as I was) you may need to send it back to Sigma for adjustment. Be sure to tell them what camera body you'll be using it on so they can adjust it accordingly. In a nutshell: focus on this lens is fast and quiet, it produces nice boke and it's one of the sharpest lenses I've ever owned.

Main advantage of this lens should be speed of f/1.4 (low-light hand-held open-wide). But it has problems with AF system and that's very annoing especially open-wide of course when you have such little DOF.

In comparison with this Sigma, Nikkor 35/1.8 costs much less, has pricise AF and need cheaper 52mm filters. There's no doubt about choice between them.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon Digital:

I bought this lens to replace a Nikkor 24 2.8 as I wanted a couple of f-stops to use ina a variety of situations.
I'm not a fan of zoom lenses as I prefer to have the "human" point of view that this 30mm can provide, since it is very similar to a 50mm in 35mm format.
I like the bulk style, although I recognize not everybody does, it gives me confidence in the fabrication of the product. All metal enclosure and camera attachment. I think I'll have a lot of fun with it.

This lens is great in low light. Will work fantastic for close up portraits, landscapes, indoor with poor lighting. This is my "Normal" Lens on my D3100, giving me the same view as my eye would, until I am able to upgrade to a Full Frame Nikon. This lens is a workhorse. Very nice bokeh!

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon Digital:

Even though many previous reviews warned about the problems with this lens I had to take a chance. Too bad! It functioned well when using the viewfinder, however, live view on my Nikon D3200 was a blurry disappointment. It seems this lens just can't function in that mode. I could have used manual focus but that defeats the purpose of the lens. It's well constructed and strong. Maybe another model could work but not this one. Back to the Nikon 35mm, f1.8 for proper operation. B&H was great handling my return and exchanging it for a different lens.

Good general use lens for daily shooting and low light photography. Lens is solid and appears to be able to give many years of use. No focus issues on my Nikon D90 or D50. Very hard to keep focused at f/1.4 but its a physics problem and not a lens issue. Have taken several hundred pictures with in in the last four weeks and have no complaints. It does what it claims to be able to do.

Locally the lens cost twice as much as through BH and though I have read mixed reviews I find the lens a great performer. Wide open pretty descent results and very useful in low light conditions. Stopped down to 2 or more it is nice and sharp. I certainly recommend this lens and enjoy it as a versatile lens for everyday use, wide enough for most uses while still useful for portraits.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon Digital:

I bought this as an affordable lens to use specifically in low light venues for concert photography. Unfortunately this lens (out of the box) does not function properly in low light.

I had read the several reviews here stating that the auto-focus had issues with focusing in front of subjects. I really thought that I would be able to adjust the auto-focus on camera... Wrong Next step? Return for Nikon 35mm f/1.8G or send off to Sigma.

For me, this lens focuses dead sharp in well lit conditions. It's really quite nice. In low light (where I planned to use it), even with fair stage lighting the lens struggles terribly to lock focus, and when it does, it's always off. To me, it seems that this lens has a terrible time finding enough contrast on any point to lock on auto-focus. I've tried everything. I really did want to love this lens...

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon Digital:

I was really looking forward to this lens... It was my first f/1.4 and after the awesome price drop, I couldn't pass buying it!

However... I had two issues with this lens that lead me to return it.

First, there's a major back-focusing problem. I have the Nikon D7000 and I can adjust it manually in the body to correct this. Annoying, and alone I couldn't live with it, but that was not the major flaw to me.

The MAJOR flaw was that when shooting wide open, or anything greater than f/2.0, there is a terrible purple fringe! Highly noticeable and makes the 1.4 completely useless! I showed it to a local repair shop and they recommended returning it as it was too noticeable to do anything about it.

I do love the lens; it is CRISP as heck for shooting at lower apertures, but I had to return it as I really wanted some fast glass and I thought this lens would do the trick. The two problems, primarily the major one, made it not worth owning as it was not going to meet my needs.

Oh! Almost forgot: Manual focus feels rugged; it's not a smooth feeling (almost as if sand was wedged in side; kind of a grinding feeling). I could live with it, but it made the lens feel a little cheap.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon Digital:

It has great bokeh in the photos. The lens is heavy but durable. It will be better if it has the manual mode.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon Digital:

I bought this to compare against Nikon's 35mm f/1.8 DX. The Sigma has a much nicer build quality, faster AF speed, and a much nicer feel to the focus ring. However, I think the Sigma version is a touch less sharp than the Nikon. Under normal circumstances I don't think it's noticeable, but you'll see it if you are a pixel peeper. However, this lens is quite a bit larger than the Nikon version. It's more the size of a 50mm and weighs quite a big more due to the all-metal construction.

                        Really Hard to Focus
                        Not really sharp but desent
                        It has a nice bokeh
                        really fast f/1.4 for 30mm
not so much of a different from nikon 35mmDXf/1.8 at night, the nikon 35mm is much sharp and much faster at focus
I like that is 30mm it make litle difference at small room compare to a 35mm

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon Digital:

This is my first prime lens and I am in love. It works great with me Nikon D5100. I got it about 3 weeks ago and haven't taken it off since. I rarely like to use my built in flash and with this lens I never have to, 1.4 is great and still sharp. The autofocus doesn't always get it right, but I prefer to focus manually in most situations anyway.

Comments about Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon Digital:

I have a friend who does wonderful portrait work with his Canon DSLR and a 28mm f/1.8 lens. I wanted to find something comparable to try on my D-90. The friend suggested I get the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens. I took his advice and have been pleased so far. We are planning a UK trip in the near future and I hope to give the lens a workout!
