Product Highlights
  • Permits Use of Fast ISOs in Bright Light
  • Used to Create Special Effects/Blurs
  • Permits Use of Wider Apertures
  • Helps Control Depth of Field
  • No Effect on Color
  • Clear at Bottom with Transition to Top

The Graduated Neutral Density Kit from Cokin consists of three filters: 121L, 121S and 121M.
Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. Cokin graduated gray ND filters are part clear, part neutral density. They allow the transition to be blended into the scene, often imperceptibly.

A Graduated Neutral Density filter is also used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since it allows the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And since it can also help to control your depth of field, it permits you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, its value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light.

Note! This kit does not include any adapter rings

Consists of

Cokin 121S - 3 stop Graduated Neutral Density (Soft)
Cokin 121L - 1.75 stop Graduated Neutral Density (Light)
Cokin 121M - 1.75 stop Graduated Neutral Density (Medium)

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

First the good. These smaller size A grads are perfect for landscape use with smaller Micro 43rds sized camera system lenses, such as the Olympus OM-D. Even works great with UWA and causes minimal to no vignetting with my Olympus 9-18 lens. Filters optically are great, and don't seem to cause any image degradation or odd color shifts. These do a great job with balancing the exposure between landscapes and bright skies. I've also added the Cokin A polarizer which works great with this system.

Now the Bad... The provided plastic cases WILL SCRATCH THE FILTER in the center. I've been walking around with these filters securely stored in an interior pocket in my camera bag for a couple of months, and recently noticed in the center of the filter there is a wear mark. Apparently the filter can make contact with the inside of provided box and wear a circular groove blemish into center of filter, ruining it. In addition the boxes do not stay closed on their own and must be taped shut or held closed with rubber bands. Unacceptable!!!, this has happened to two of the filters, I may see if I can get these replaced under warranty or something.

Comments about Cokin Graduated Neutral Density Filter Kit for "A " Series:

Was very happy to downgrade to Cokin A when I switched to m4/3 from Nikon. Now I have the same high quality filter system taking up less space in my smaller bag. Although it says you can't shoot wide-angled on a 62mm lens, I find no vignetting on the Olympus 12-40 f/2.8 pro 62mm filtered lens.

Comments about Cokin Graduated Neutral Density Filter Kit for "A " Series:

I shoot city scapes, macro and sunsets. My main problem has always been sun flare with city shots during the day, the same with full sun macros and my sunsets didn't POP with color. I do not use photoshop, I just take what I get in the camera. These filters so for the first time out have solved my major issues I was expierencing so I am thrilled with my purchase. They store easy and are a snap to use when needed just clip on the holder drop one in and shoot. Yes they are not glass but I do not see a difference shooting the same scene with or without them, there is no degradation of the photo.

Comments about Cokin Graduated Neutral Density Filter Kit for "A " Series:

I have owned the Cokin system since 1978 when it was first introduced. I had graduated filters in cokin just not neutral density ones. I used regular circular ND Filters. These filters work great as do all the Cokin Filters. They work great in my old holder with no problem. The only thing different is the plastic case the filter comes in. The old cases were marked what filter was in the case, the new cases are not marked so I had to use a tape writer to mark the case. I store the filters in these cases so it makes it easier to find a certain filter. Again I have used the Cokin system since 1978 and have had no problems with them. They are convenient and fast to change and work great.

I recently retired my Canon A1 film camera for a Canon 50D digital camera. I was delighted to learn that the Cokin Filter System I had purchased over 30 years ago still fit the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. I was also surprised to learn that B&H still carried the Series A filters. The ND filter kit I ordered was a perfect compliment to the Cokin filters I already owned and each of the graduated filters fit the 30-year old mounting system and performed perfectly.
