The Manfrotto 685B NeoTec Monopod Deluxe Photo Monopod with Safety Lock features the innovative NeoTec rapid opening and closing mechanism. The leg opens up by simply pulling down on it, and automatically locks into any position, with no screws, knobs or levers to tighten. The 685B also sports a safety lever that prevents accidental deployment of the locking release mechanism. To close the monopod, simply activate the safety lever with the 'pinkie' finger, which then allows the grip action handle to be depressed. The lever is simple to operate while still maintaining one-handed closing operation. The heavier the weight pushing down on it from above the more locking power this innovative mechanism exerts.

To further improve the single-handed performance of the NeoTec Monopod, Manfrotto has added a lightweight rubber foot pedal to make opening or closing a snap. To increase the height of the camera, simply step on the pedal and lift the monopod to the new position. For storage and transportation, the foot pedal folds away against the bottom leg section.

As the other reviewers have already mentioned, this monopodis expensive, but there's nothing like it in terms ofconvenience so this alone dictates the price. On paper, it is a fantastic design. No longer do you need torotate knobs or slap open and shut levers to adjust height.Just a press of a trigger is all it takes to adjust yourheight. Awesome. And after using it, I concur it really isawesome. The only gripes I have are the following:1) When extended to standing height (almost full length),the monopod is a bit shaky. This is something i have notseen anyone mention yet. The load capacity is stated for33lbs, which was a big consideration for me as i'm using itwith my EF 400mm 2.8L as well a EF 500mm F4L IS with 1DmkIIbodies. These setups with Extenders and Extension tubes arewell under 33lbs, yet the monopod can easily be shaken ifflexed sideways at almost full extension. Not a *huge* deal, but I wanted to mention this in case anyone has theexpectation of a super stiff monopod. As a means ofsupporting massive weight, it does the job. But if you areshooting slow shutter speeds with a sizeable load, then keepthis in mind.2) the rubber foot on the ball joint is a terrific idea, butthe rubber foot can sometimes slip off, so be careful. Iwish it was less easier to remove.3) the step lever at the bottom makes using this automaticmonopod a joy over the 3245, but it has such a small footprintthat you really have to make sure you press it down goodotherwise the monopod slips out under your foot prettyeasily. If it was a little bit longer and/or wider, thiscould be more secure to step on.4) for this much money, I wish the monopod movement wasdampened and air-cushioned. As it is now, if you unlock themonopod with a sizeable load, it will fall down rapidly soyou have to make sure you are supporting the weight first.5) I concur...for this much money, a nice shoulder strap andsoft case would have been nice.6) I wish it was about a foot shorter when collapsed. It'sstill pretty long when minimized.Aside from these things I wanted to mention, I think it is agreat monopod. If Bogen could refine it a bit further itreally could be perfect. But until the competition offersalternatives, it really is the most convenient monopod by far.- Christian del Rosario- kam | photo

I use this with my Canon 500mm f4 coupled with either the 7D or 1DIII body and on occasion combined with a flash set-up. My main subject is wildlife, especially birds. Although this rig is close to the suggested maximum load the monopod is solid and easy to set-up. It only takes a second or two to go from standing to a kneeling position. Adding a video-style head makes it much easier to carry over the shoulder. Once you try this monopod you will appreciate just how quick and easy it is to get onto your subject. This is especially true if the terrain makes using a tripod inpractical. It will not replace a tripod.
As long as you keep the inner tubing free of moisture it should last a long time. The lower part of the leg is sealed (I've used it without problems in salt and fresh water) but the upper sealing is not adequate for dealing with rain or careless washing! Once that happens the locking mechanism starts to fail and you run the certain risk of the rig just collapsing as you are about to take a photo. There is no way to clean the inner tubing and just leaving it to dry did not solve the problem. Mine lasted about three years which doesn't seem bad value.
Like other users, I lost the (useless) rubber foot on my first outing. A few months later I noticed that screws and nuts were missing in the grip. I suggest removing the rubber foot and using a semi-permanent glue to keep the screws and nuts in place. Lastly, even without any kind of head and removing the foot plate it is still rather long by monopod standards. You may find it too large for some suitcases.

Comments about Manfrotto 685B NeoTec Monopod Deluxe Photo Monopod with Safety Lock:

I bought this as a Christmas present for my husband. It is very easy to use as you can work it and adjust it with one hand and still keep your camera secure. We are going on a big trip next summer to the Mediterranean and will be taking lots of pictures. We are looking forward to the heavy use with little strain! Will fit in our suitcases and weighs very little.

Comments about Manfrotto 685B NeoTec Monopod Deluxe Photo Monopod with Safety Lock:

I've used this monopod and its predecessor with a 3oo and a 400 2.8 for more than 7 years. It works. If you stand and kneel and stand and kneel as you shoot, the one-handed height adjustment is great. Like all good tools, if you use this one regularly, it needs regular maintenance. Keep the appropriate Allen wrench in your bag to tighten the 6 screws in the handle. The height release will not work properly if the screws get too loose. If you do lose a screw, and I've lost a few, don't waste your time contacting Manfrotto; they never responded to my email messages. Manfrottospares.com (UK) sent me the parts I needed quickly and for a fair price. The monopod is great. My only complaint is Manfrotto's poor customer service.

This was my first monopod, but I can't imagine not being able to alter the height one handed and on the go after using this monopod. It's a little longer than some, but it isn't heavy and think the trade off of the one handed mechanism is worth it.

Comments about Manfrotto 685B NeoTec Monopod Deluxe Photo Monopod with Safety Lock:

I use this monopod with a Canon 5D Mark II with a 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens. I shoot sports and theater, and I've had this monopod for several years.

This lens, which weighs 3.5 pounds, has a tripod mount that will swivel, so I don't need a head on the monopod. When you rotate the lens from horizontal to vertical it drops the height of the viewfinder by several inches, so you have to either bend down to look through it or lower the monopod. I change the shot orientation frequently, and that's where this monopod is so great. It's a snap to adjust the height of the monopod so that I can be comfortable looking through the viewfinder. When I rotate back to horizontal, it's again a quick adjustment back to the original position.

If I didn't have to frequently change the height of the monopod, this one would not have a significant advantage, but I do, so it does. Huge.

Comments about Manfrotto 685B NeoTec Monopod Deluxe Photo Monopod with Safety Lock:

As a Real Estate Photographer, my Manfrotto monopod is in my hand nearly every day. This is my second in three years - I wore the first one out. Biggest challenge is replacing the "foot" if you lose it (which can happen easily when tramping shooting landscape around up-scale homes or on large acreage). It costs a fortune to replace this part. Another challenge is that the teensy tiny screws come loose easily and if you lose the screw or the nut, its impossible to find them or replace them. An associate and I actually harvested parts from a "retired" Manfrotto monopod to maintenance our equipment as needed. That aside, it's a great tool!

Comments about Manfrotto 685B NeoTec Monopod Deluxe Photo Monopod with Safety Lock:

Compared to my other Manfrotto monopod:
+ deploys quickly: much easier and faster than opening and closing three latches
              - feels slightly less substantial
              - the fully closed length is noticably longer

Gotcha: arrives new with a thin film of grease/oil on the legs, which is annoying to get on your hands. I wiped all the oil off, and hope doing so does not affect the smoothness of telescoping over the years to come.

I use the NeoTec Monopod for action/ sports mostly with my 70-200 f/2.8 + 100-400mm. Because I have severe arthritis I needed a monopod that would be easy for me to use in one quick motion ( extend and contract). Having said that it's easy to contract but for the extension I use my feet to hold the monopod (with the new foot shield I purchased) at the base and use both hands for the grip to extend it. It's a bit cumbersome but I've gotten used to it. I am very pleased with this monopod and hope it continues to work as well as it is now.

I bought the 685B and, upon attempting to use it for the first time, I found that the lower extension tube would not lock in any extended position. I called Manfrotto and eventually got someone to call me back to discuss the problem. The upshot of the whole affair is that the equipment is UNREPAIRABLE for this problem. Once the "lower unit" is fully assembled it cannot be dis-assembled for repairs according to Manfrotto. This lack of repairability is a serious liability.

This my second purchase of this Monopod, the first one is over four years old and still works great. This second one is for my second 7D and I really enjoy the rapid opening and closing action this monopod uses. I can step on the foot "spur" thing at the bottom and bring my camera to shooting height in seconds, no latches to unlock/lock, and it locks into place until you adjust with the handle. I've used this monopod with my 7D and the canon 100-400mm L many times for surfing photos and it handles the weight perfect.

As my headline reads, this monopod is well made and solid. Not a 5 star rating mind you, due to it's weight, but a great addition to my wildlife shooting. I would not leave home without it.
Supports my DSLR and a 150 - 500 zoom with ease.
It's release mechanism is very clever.

Comments about Manfrotto 685B NeoTec Monopod Deluxe Photo Monopod with Safety Lock:

I use this NeoTec monopod primarily to support my 100 to 400mm zoom lens. It's primary feature is the instant setup and subsequent adjustments. No clips or knobs to twist. Pull open, it stays unless you squeeze the trigger. One hand stays on the camera, your eye stays in the finder and when you release the trigger, it locks. It's a bit longer when folded than my previous monopods but I can live with that.

My purpose for buying this was due to my inability to hold steady when shooting in low light and no flash. Makes it much easier and I like the ease of adjustment.

Comments about Manfrotto 685B NeoTec Monopod Deluxe Photo Monopod with Safety Lock:

I received it on Friday and used it today covering an event. Being able to easily move it up and down without bending over was great. Very solid feel and no problem holding my Nikon D3 with 70-200 f/2.8 with a 2x tele extender.

The bottom foot rotates to be able to extend the spike. Becuase of this you really need to hold this harder since it will tend to rotate. After getting used to it for a bit, I had no issues.

The tubes also rotate, so if you like to use a monopod to hold your camera in teh air or a flash this is not for you. It will just keep swinging to the center of gravity and you can't turn it.

Comments about Manfrotto 685B NeoTec Monopod Deluxe Photo Monopod with Safety Lock:

If you're going to use a monopod, this is the one to get. The one-handed, quick-release, on-the-fly height adjustability makes this monopod the only way to go.
Doesn't add the stability of a tripod, but adds more image sharpness than pure hand-holding and can make the difference between very sharp and unuseable.

The rubber foot falls off all by itself, with no provocation. I am extremly gentle and careful with my equipment, and it even falls off for me. I'd suggest the attachment that fixes this problem.

Worked great for about 6 months. Then it would not stay extended. Sent in for warranty work 3 months ago. Parts I need are back ordered. Which tells me this is a common problem.
